Burt Gummer’s Rec Room- October 2010 Archive

A gathering place for firearms enthusiasts, paranoid survivalists and those who worship at the Church of Chang.

Winter’s coming up. Look’s like it’s time to break out the emergency rations.

Disclaimer: This is the part of the Church that is the most no holds barred. None of it is intended with malice, and although it can on occasion seem a little bit fraught, it is banter rather than venom.

And back in college we used to watch MST3K during hangovers, and they were sort of hit and miss. I found them quite funny sometimes.

So I watched Highlander 5: Sperm Bank last night.
WTF. The series got more and more fucked as it went on. The Guardian…really? Sheesh….

    • Jarv says :

Terribly insane and fucked up. Only way to describe it.

    • kloipy says :

I grew up watching MST3K from it’s early days on Comedy Central, and honestly it was one of the defining factors that built my sense of humor. They definitely have some off episodes, but when they are on a roll, it’s fucking hilarious and smart

  2. Franklin T Marmoset says :

    Holy shit.

So it turns out Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is fucking awesome.

    Fucking. Awesome.

    I didn’t see that coming.

  3. Franklin T Marmoset says :

Speaking of fucking awesome films, I seen The Social Network last night, which I liked very, very much. And it was as much an Aaron Sorkin film as a David Fincher film, which was nice to see.

In what must be some sort of minor miracle, they managed to make various business shenanigans and the creation of a website fascinating. They also did a solid job of portraying a relatively new type of person – the bitter, angry, posturing internet nerd.

If I had a top ten for the year, The Social Network would definitely be on it.

  4. Franklin T Marmoset says :

Oh, and I wholeheartedly approve of that image of Jackie Chan as Wong Fei Hung in Drunken Master 2. That’s a great choice.

    Good work, Jarv.

  5. just pillow talk says :

Oh, and I caught some of the original Clash of the Titans last night. To be fair, it’s a pretty shit movie.

It’s great when, after the two-headed wolf thing kills one of the 3 guys who went with him to kill Medusa, he declares to the two remaining ‘red shirts’…”now there are 3 of us”.

No shit. Perhaps instead of going on that journey he should have stayed home and taught the kids mathematics.

    • Jarv says :

I love that film. We used to get to watch it every so often in Latin class instead of studying latin.

    • kloipy says :

yeah I will second Jarv on that, but it’s probably just a nostalgia thing for me, as I used to watch it all the time as a kid. I haven’t seen it in a very long time and I’m sure it might change my perspective. However, Harryhausen’s work on that film is awesome. Medusa used to scare the shit out of me as a kid

  6. Franklin T Marmoset says :

Somehow I have managed, after watching The Social Network last night and Scott Pilgrim this morning, to see two of my favourite films this year in less than 24 hours.

    That’s not bad going.

It also provides a nice buffer of goodness to help soak up the inevitable shitness I believe is coming my way later tonight, like eating a Kit-Kat before you start drinking to soak up the alcohol.

    • Jarv says :

      Come now.

Chin up- it’s dire, but fun dire and there’s some genuine comedy in it.

    • kloipy says :

Frank, is Scott Pilgram good? I’ve been up and down about wanting to see it

      • Jarv says :

He thinks it’s awesome. But he is ill.

      • kloipy says :

yeah Jarv, it’s one of those movies that looks like it’s tailor-made to annoy the shit out of me. I honestly am sick of the whole ‘nerd/geek’ film. It is like they are like, ‘Hey lets just throw some stupid 80’s shit around and the geeks will go crazy over it’ which is sadly true sometimes
But on the other hand, I’ve really enjoyed Wright’s films so far

      • Franklin T Marmoset says :

I can’t offer any guarantees, Kloipy. It seems to be a film that’s divided people into love it/hate it camps, and all I can say is I’m definitely in the love it camp.

It’s a huge dollop of colourful, goofy fun; somewhat similar in tone to Shaolin Soccer, which was another film I liked a lot.

My biggest worry about the film was it was going to pander to the hipster douchebag element, but it’s a much a gentle of satire of glib young people as anything else.

Give it a try, let me know what you think.

      • Franklin T Marmoset says :

Christ, I fucked that sentence up. What I meant to say was:

It’s as much a gentle satire of glib young people as anything else.

Apologies. Like everything else this week, I blame my illness.

      • kloipy says :

thanks Frankie, I’ll give it a go and let you know~

      • koutchboom says :

Frank just curious did you like Speed Racer?

I’ve seen both those films as well. I enjoyed them but I wasn’t in love with them.

Also if you REALLY liked Scott Pilgrim I suggest you hunt down the cartoon Code Monkeys, its the exact same thing just a cartoon.

Social Network was good but it could’ve been great. As it stands now its just like a really good episode of TV. Too much focus was put on the twins story and crouch shots of them to save money on a sure ‘Forrest Gump’ style visual effects nom with a possible win at the oscars for their face replacement.

      • Jarv says :

Speed Racer: Like being bumraped by a neon psychadelic clown.

      • koutchboom says :

Speed Racer: Like a night on the town with Droid.

      • Droid says :

Christ. Coming from you, who wants Speed Racers babies, that’s a 10 out of 10 on the creepiness quota. Sorry mate, but I’ll never let you experience “a night on the town with Droid”.

      • koutchboom says :

Its ok Droid. I’ve already seen the film adaptation. (Serbian Film)

    • Droid says :

“The Palace of Westminster is part of a Unesco world heritage site, and it’s both inappropriate and insulting for this important location and its buildings to effectively be abused in this manner. It’s also a criminal offence.

Stuffy, humourless fucking Brits. You cunts projected alky Flintoff onto the Sydney Harbour bridge for fucks sake. We took it as banter.

  7. koutchboom says :

    Caught Tron night last night.

And in the freebie shit they handed out I notcied something:

    =

SOOO YEAH I’m thinking if you didn’t like that then your probably not going to dig Tron 2: Die Harder.

  8. Franklin T Marmoset says :

    To Koutch

I’ve actually got Speed Racer right here and am considering giving it a second chance this afternoon. I might as well since I’m still in bed and there’s no fucking way I’m watching daytime telly.

My feeling at the moment is that Speed Racer and Scott Pilgrim are both trying to do similar things, but that Scott Pilgrim does it much, much, much more successfully.

We’ll see, though. I’ll get back to you after I’ve seen Speed Racer again.

    • Jarv says :

Speed Racer: Like being clubbed to death with a sack of skittles.

      • koutchboom says :

Speed Racer: Like London in the Spring Time.

      • Jarv says :

London in the spring is lovely, ignoramus.

May is probably the nicest month of the year.

      • koutchboom says :

Is it perhaps a gay old time?

      • Jarv says :

No, because it’s London, not fucking Bedrock.

      • koutchboom says :

        Really??

      • Jarv says :

One gay pride march does not a pink fiesta make.

Anyway, just because you lot are so backward you still burn homos at the stake, doesn’t mean that the rest of the world isn’t more enlightened.

      • koutchboom says :

Whats that got to do with anything?

I’m just saying London seems like its Speed Racer style fun:

NOPE that picture is too big to post:

      • Jarv says :

        Are these your holiday snaps?

      • koutchboom says :

Ohh now you are just being a dick. You know I’m too fat to travel.

      • Jarv says :

        Hehehe-

        Kevin Smith Airways:

“Why squeeze into one normal sized seat and risk Deep Vein Thrombosis? Here at KSA we understand that the average American is seriously rotund and so for a small extra price you can have one of our “lardass” seats. Yes, these really are Jumbo Jets”

      • koutchboom says :

I’ve only had to sit next to one giant fat man on a flight once, when I was a teenager and it was on Gulf Air. And you could still smoke on that airline. The dude slept and woke up like every hour to have a fag, and it was like a 6 hour flight.

My problem on flights is the fucking leg room that and I’ve got a fucking demon that follows me around on flights and ensures that the person in front of me reclines their seat the SECOND they are in the air.

It was so bad on my flight to Hawaii last year the asshole put his seat down right as the plane started rolling for take off. I just fucking shuck the shit out of his seat to get him to put it up. But seriously, I know whenever I step foot on a plane the douche in front of me will always put their seat back.

      • Jarv says :

I’m 6 foot plus and really suffer on flights because of that- it’s got even worse for me since the rise of the No Frills airlines. I also always get a child behind me kicking the fucking seat for the entire time.

      • koutchboom says :

Yeah me too man. I don’t mind the kids so much as the 5 foot nothing ass hole in front of me that reclines his seat. I remember once I was on a Air Italia flight that had that TVs on the seat in front of you. This douche fucking leaned back like five minutes into a 6+ hour flight and these tvs didn’t pivit enough so you could fucking see them with the seat reclined all the way back. So I just jamed his seat up (he all of the sudden spoke no English and only Italian and I tried to tell him in my basic italian to not be a fucking dick). The stewardness came and told me not to do that, and I showed her that I had no choice not to jam my knees into the back of his seat for they had no where else to go.

So pretty much I tried to sleep. Anyways getting off the plane I’m walking next to this fuck and he was easily 2 foot shorter then me I just fucking laughed at him as he tried to walk fast away from me.

      • Jarv says :

I just try to get hammered and pass out now. The whole experience of flying is just awful nowadays- from the endless queues to ridiculous overcompensating security measures, overpriced pubs, overcrowded flights and fucking Ryanair trying to flog me a sodding scratchcard every 7 second.

        Pah!

Then you get there, and it’s all ace again.

      • koutchboom says :

Yeah back when I was living in Italy I always made sure to chug 3 beers right before I got on board so I’d be asleep before take off.

Thinking about it. I may have just woken up and that ass hole had reclined all the way back.

    • koutchboom says :

      Cool. I was just wondering.

I don’t think that Speed and Scott are really THAT similar beyond the hyper color. I think Speed does it better because it doesn’t have the same little twist at the end of each fight/race. I think Scott though is a lot easier to enjoy than Speed for most people. My ADDness makes Speed very enjoyable to me.

But I’m serious about Code Monkeys, its pretty much Scott Pilgrim the TV show. No one believes me about this since its a cartoon show. But its a cartoon show that looks like a NES game. I’m telling you give it a shot.

  9. LB says :

Holy Shit. North Korea Fires on South Korea-no casualties.

    We’ll see.

Franklin, I hope you feel better quickly.

As to like/disliking Scott Pilgrim: I’d probably like the hell out of it. I thought KickAss was great!

Speed Racer was fucking terrible, though, I tried to watch it. I lasted for 20 minutes and said it’s fucking obnoxious.

    O.o-funny link for Halloween:

    http://cineboobs.com/post/1431666413/the-shining-jack-nicholson

And The Pit-what time is it for The United States?

    • Jarv says :

Erm- what time is it there now?

    • Franklin T Marmoset says :

      Thanks, Bronco.

See, someone around this place can be nice when a person is ill!

I liked Kick-Ass, too. You should give Scott Pilgrim a go, you’ll probably have a lot of fun with it.

    • Jarv says :

Bronco- it goes live in T-minus 5 Hours 6 minutes.

You will require booze, else you won’t make it through. Last time we had some of my mates, erm, homegrown and were frankly caned by the end of it.

      • LB says :

Thank you sir for the update-*sheesh* That’s like 11:00 in the morning.

        Right.

I think I can handle it-though I’m still woozy from The World Series…

        And I quote: from twitter.

The Texas Rangers should take time off and eat some Texas Chili-they could use the runs.

      • Jarv says :

I couldn’t believe what happened when I read it in the Guardian earlier

  10. koutchboom says :

Also it sucked last night because after the Tron thing they gave us a coupon for a cheap movie ticket good for only THAT NIGHT. And I really wanted to see ‘Take You To the Noodle Shop’, but I had a fucking headache and didn’t want to sit through a subtitled film.

  11. koutchboom says :

Awww damint I thought this was about Jacques Audiard. Fucking French names. Either way sounds interesting.

Annaud did Enemy at the Gates, Seven Years in Tibet, Quest For Fire and The Bear.

But the movie is starring the A Profit guy, Tahar Rahim. Hrmmm looking at his IMDB I see that he was also in Inside, need to watch that sick shit again.

    http://www.deadline.com/2010/10/is-jean-jacques-annauds-black-gold-biggest-ever-arab-backed-pic/

    • Jarv says :

That was one shitty list of films.

Oh, and watch Inside again? Yikes.

      • koutchboom says :

Really? The Bear fucking rocks. I liked Seven Years and have been meaning to see Quest for Fire. Enemy at the Gates was pretty good.

I wouldn’t call it SHITTY. Maybe a little boring and slow. I think he’s an interesting director. He’s like a French Alan Parker.

      • Jarv says :

Enemy of the Gates is dreadful toss with Jude Law in it. 7 Years was dreadful boring toss. Haven’t seen the Bear.

      • koutchboom says :

Eh I like boring toss. You can stick with you love for the hyper active nonsense you enjoy like Speed Racer.

  12. Franklin T Marmoset says :

Okay, so I made it fifteen minutes into Speed Racer and I had to turn it off. Man, that is one ugly film.

Speed Racer is like getting raped in the eye sockets by two of the Disney corporation’s twelve monstrous penises.

    Penis in eye socket!

  13. LB says :

Holy Shit-I got a reply from the world’s greatest living Director: Viv Thomas.

    Hint: He’s a pornographer.

    Life is good.

    • Jarv says :

      Hehe.

      Funny.

T-Minus 5 Hours till the post goes Live Bronco- just in case you didn’t see my answer to the other one.

    • Franklin T Marmoset says :

Hey, that guy makes awesome fake lesbian porn.

I mean… um… what I mean to say is… ah, I heard – you know, from someone else, someone who is totally not me – that he makes awesome fake lesbian porn.

      • Jarv says :

Droid’s the resident smut expert round these parts.

      • Droid says :

You gotta be an expert on something.

      • Droid says :

The article is accurate, if a little smarmy and bitter, but this last bit is a load of shit. It destroys whatever he was aiming at and just makes him out to be, as you said, a dick.

So England’s last proper Ashes series victory in Australia was Ray Illingworth’s team in 1970-71, when Bill Lawry was replaced by Ian Chappell as captain and Lillee made his debut. Lawry is now 73, Chappell 67 and Lillee 61.

Cricket Australia’s series slogan is right: history will be made. None of the current players were born when England last legitimately won the Ashes in Australia.

      • Jarv says :

If you’re going to do it, get it right. Strauss went to fucking Radley, for the love of God. He’s as English as Symonds is Aussie. Prior has lived practically bloody everywhere in the world.

Aside from those two- Trott, KP, Morgan are patently not English, KP less so than the other two, but England has always effectively been the Lions so Morgan gets through on that. Trott though, is pretty indefensible.

And he doesn’t mention the bowlers at all. Wonder why?

That paragraph was what got my attention, actually. It just comes across as being a really bad loser.

Point being, that this is a pretty pathetic thing to hang an article on. It’s bitter, petty and sad- I personally think Australia will win this, but shit like that really does the game no favours. That isn’t banter- it’s just dickishness

      • Droid says :

I am the first to confess that I use the joke “Man, South Africa played well in the cricket” whenever England win, but that’s just banter and pisstaking. We do roll our eyes when yet another Saffa gets a call up, and also shake our heads in disgust at when a Pom tries to use Symonds as a comeback. But really, we don’t care that much. We care more about how our lads are playing than who they’re playing, I think. The last time England won in Australia is the last time they legitimately won. To try to say otherwise is stupid, petty and sounds like a man already making excuses.

      • Jarv says :

The other thing, is that the last time England won in Australia was over 20 fucking years ago. You don’t need to try to make out it’s nearer 50. It sounds like petty, stupid and a dumbass attempt to extend bragging rights for perpetuity.

Mrs. Jarv tells me that the internets are fucked at home. This may be difficult tonight.

      • koutchboom says :

So Invictus should’ve been about Cricket with a K?

      • Jarv says :

No, because the Saffa cricket team always chokes and never wins anything.

        But very clever though.

      • Jarv says :

We know it’s a joke- and believe me, it is embarrasing when we pull an “Ireland 1990” and find any bastard with the slightest trace of English blood to stuff in the team. It’s nice to be able to retaliate to Saffas with “I feel sorry for any of you bastards to shit to make it into the England side”. Winds them up a treat.

However, in a few years time, it’s conceivable that there won’t be one Saffa in the side:

    • LB says :

Ha! Fake, Real-Life is just an illusion.

His illusions are pretty dang convincing!

      Hoo-Rah!

1:00 in the afternoon for the Pit.

That’s much better than 11:00 in morning.

      See, that’s when I usually get up…

  14. Bartleby says :

I liked Scott Pilgrim too, and I think Droid liked it too. I gave it a high rating, and did think it ‘awesome’ but Im not sure Id watch it over and over again. I liked Social Network too but would stop short of ‘best movie of the year’ I rthought it was a well made movie about a douchebag.

Tron footage review up at the site. Wasnt impressed at all. It’s gonna bomb, I think. No Avatar style success for this.

Also saw Saw 3D. review up there for it too. Now I just need to get the finger out and do reviews for Monsters, Girl kicked hornets nest and Aftershock..and Walking Dead ep 1.

    • koutchboom says :

I don’t think Tron will Speed Racer bomb. But I can’t imagine after the Speed Racer bomb and the lack luster GI Joe number how they got the film fucking produced. Also its coming out during Christmas, Christmas event films tend to do better box office.

Also was your Tron theater full? My Liemax was a little less then half full. HAhahahahah.

  15. Bartleby says :

yea, mine too Koutch…and they were all dreadfully rude bout it. And the onyl scene that got people pumped was when Journey started playing,. and that was it. Ther Tron world footage was ‘meh’. Jeff Bridges looked asleep. No it wont SR bomb, but I dont think its going to be huge I’ve seen Narnia footage and right now, that one is looking better than this.

    • koutchboom says :

Really? Narnia director bores me. Almost worse than Prince of Persia director.

Yeah Jeff was fine, the kid was fine Christina Ri…I mean Oliva Wilde fucking blew.

The thing about the Tron Legacy world is that the geogrphy of it made no sense. Makes it feel like video game cut scenes. Movies like Speed Racer/Tron 1/Gi Joe at leas their georography made sense. Tron Legacy world just sort seems made up for what they needed to do.

But yeah Journey was the only pump up moment.

  16. Jarv says :

    Thank fuck.

Off for preparatory public house session.

I’m in the most inconvenient fucking place in Belsize Park to get to. It’s practically Finchley road and I can either walk for 20 minutes to get a bus. Get a bus to get a tube which I’ll have to change three times, or walk for 15 minutes get a bus then walk again.

I may just walk home. It’ll take me about the same fucking time.

  17. Jarv says :

    HUZZAH!

Drunken Cinema night. Goes live at 8.30pm- film starts for 9

    See you there.

  18. Droid says :

Right. Time to shut down this fucking computer and get the fuck away from work.

Tube. Train. Supermarket. Walk. Home. Eat. Drink. Drunk.

    DRUNKEN CINEMA!!! (bitches!)

  19. LB says :

Holy Shit! I got a Twitter reply from Steve Martin. The *Real* Steve Martin. The Jerk! Unbelievable…gah *head explodes*

  20. Droid says :

Fuck Nightmare on Elm St 2. What a piece of shit. I’d Orang of Doom that fucker. Dream Warriors better be an improvement or I may give this up.

  21. Jarv says :

Got Book of Eli to watch from Lovefilm, and something called Samurai Zombie, which had better be ace.

  22. Jarv says :

Are you going to mini-review them?

  23. Droid says :

    A Droidian Nightmare Update

    3. Dream Warriors was good. Thank fucking christ for that. I was ready to pack the whole thing in if it was as shit as 2.

    4. Dream Master was okay. But I was kind of losing interest in it about 2/3rds the way through.

I’ve seen 5 at the cinema and even when I was 10 I knew it was shit, so I’m not looking forward to the next one.

  24. Jarv says :

    Fuck me.

Children of the Corn stupidity starting tomorrow.

    1, 2 & 3 procured. I am going to regret this one.

  25. Jarv says :

    Halloween Moviethon update.

Well, Samurai Zombie was surprisingly acceptable. Now starting that idiotic Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet drivel.

I blame Droid entirely for this one.

    • Droid says :

      You’re welcome.

      • Jarv says :

        Thoroughly meh.

        Slasher/ Evil ghost hybrid.

A quite staggering amount of dodgy nudity in it, the classic 30 year old actors playing teenagers. Eliza Dushku’s brother plays the lead. One poor woman has to spend the entire film wondering around in the buff.

On the plus side- good practical effects, and more gore than a butchers floor. Huge amount of boob, some quite funny moments.

On the minus side- every single cliché Scream ripped on is present and correct, the killer is fucking obvious, there’s a staggeringly tasteless rape scene, and the supernatural elements of the film don’t particularly make sense.

2 Changs. Not a complete bucket of shit, but pretty derivative, predictable and uninspiring.

Mrs. Jarv liked it more than me.

  26. Jarv says :

Next up: Witchfinder General. I’ve been meaning to watch this all week and not got around to it yet.

  27. ThereWolf says :

    Just finished watching Daywalkers…

    Hmmm.

Started okay. Then it went nowhere. Then it didn’t make any sense at the end.

    • Jarv says :

Didn’t like the end of that, at all.

HAving trouble obtaining Lifeforce so been forced to buy it.

      • ThereWolf says :

I think The extended version of Lifeforce is on Region 1 DVD only. Could be mistaken though…

      • Jarv says :

Possibly. I’ve just bought whichever one.

It was £3 and it’ll get here this week.

      • ThereWolf says :

        Tragic irony of last night…

Having downloaded The Pit only for my PC to zap it into oblivion overnight, I was forced to stream the movie yesterday which luckily went okay.

Today, I discovered that my Media Player, in its infinite wisdom, had procured itself a copy completely unannounced! Since when did ‘streaming’ mean ‘secretly downloading without telling you’?

        Twat. And promptly deleted.

      • ThereWolf says :

The UK version of Lifeforce I first saw was 100 minutes. The R1 I got was 116 mins.

Now, the R2 version appears to have reached 110 minutes.

Apparently there’s a new rare shorter US print which I’m guessing is our original 100 min one.

    • Jarv says :

      Alright.

Children of the Corn. Here we go…

      Opening quite good, actually.

  28. Jarv says :

Unfortunate. Still, lifeforce is next for drunken cinema and that is fucking incredible.

  29. Jarv says :

    I saw it- porn!

Am fucking astounded by CotC at the moment. It’s really quite fucked up.

    • Continentalop says :

First, it is soft porn, not porn. Secondly, it is soft porn I wrote. And finally, I was drunk when I wrote it. I think that makes it an interesting Drunk Cinema suggestion for you guys.

      • ThereWolf says :

        That seals the deal.

        Jarv, we’re watching it.

        Is it downloadable?

      • Continentalop says :

Let me reply to the right post:

I would imagine there is a torrent for it.

      • ThereWolf says :

Uh-huh. There are one or two.

No point attempting that now – my PC connection is rather slow at the moment. Laughably described as ‘Fair’. Yeh, fairly shite…

      • Jarv says :

BT throttling your download speed? Yup, they do that to me too occasionally.

It’s a fucking scam, basically, torrenting eats up your allowed bandwidth per month and they come down on you like a ton of bricks for it.

      • Jarv says :

        Holy Shit!

Yup. Lifeforce next and then that’s up afterwards.

There’s bound to be a copy out there on the internets that works.

  30. Jarv says :

    That kid wants a kicking.

Bring him the blood of the OUTLANDER!

Actually, that’s not a bad idea for Drunken Cinema either

  31. Jarv says :

It is kind of a cheat, though. These are clearly teenagers of the corn

  32. Jarv says :

I cannot believe they squeezed 9 films out of this.

    • ThereWolf says :

      NINE!

Thought there was only about 3!

      • Jarv says :

        Yup.

One due out this year as well.

That was honestly, surprisingly not shit at all. Some genuine comedy in it, the kids were creepy as all hell.

        Very, very surprised.

No doubt the sequels suck balls.

      • Jarv says :

Sorry- wasn’t clear: there are 7 to date+ 1 remake (why?) and one due out called “The Dwelling”.

      • ThereWolf says :

I recall Isaac being a creepy, nasty character. And Linda Hamilton singing. That’s all.

      • Jarv says :

High point of the film is easily when he clocks the kid in the head with a car door. Hilarious.

Isaac was creepy as fuck- it opens with a really well staged massacre, and yes, Linda Hamilton does indeed sing.

Other notable people to appear in Children of the Corn films include Naomi Watts, Charlize Theron and a few more. The one I’m really dreading is 666: Isaac’s return. Nothing good can come from that.

      • ThereWolf says :

        Charlize in a Corn film…

That’s mind boggling. Before she was famous? Or when she ought to know better…

  33. koutchboom says :

Ummm there is a premiere movie on SyFy right now called Red: Werewolf Hunter. Its about a descendent of little red riding hood who hunts were wolves. Sounds like a good nom for drunken cinema. Plus it stars the Joss Wheadon slag Felicia Day.

  34. Droid says :

Update on the life and times of one Frederick Bartholomew Krueger…

    5. Pretty crap. By this point the films are just comedies, and Krueger is just an annoying mischief maker. This one does have some good production values, but it’s all noise and fury. Not scary at all.

    6. A direct ripoff of Dream Warriors (it even goes so far as to open the film with a quote from that film), and again, some nice production values, but this one is particularly shitty.

I’ve got the excellent New Nightmare next and then it’s back to shitsville for FvJ and the remake.

  35. M. Blitz says :

    Happy Halloween!!!

  36. Franklin T Marmoset says :

And a happy Halloween to all at Moonwolves.

    Alright, off out now. Cheers!

  37. Tom_Bando says :

So weekend watching in Maine this time out:

*Eragon: AKA Star Wars w/ a Big Bloo Rachel Weisz Dragon. Egads. This had some funnish parts-Jeremy Irons was in it for the money, Malkovich did a 10 minute cash grab-but seriously, folks—why bother here?! Every Single character and Plot ‘twist’ was right outta Star Wars! Fuck that shit. Josh Stone Cameo. Ooooh. Anyways.

*Flushed Away: Now that was fun. I liked the whole ‘Wolverine suit/Elvis Suit/Wolverine/Elvis etc at the start. Funny. Good voicing, action, humour. Def. an Aardman production.

*Simon and Simon ‘Simon w/out Simon’ episodes. Pretty good stuff from the middle of the run. MacReney and Stevenson were funny together, esp. playing drunk at one point, someone tries to machine gun them down at their place near the canal. Enjoyable.

*Sherlock Holmes/Hound of the Baskervilles–you know, Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Lionel Atwill, John Carradine? Good stuff. The dog wags it’s tail the whole way thru the ‘ferocious attack’, but it’s still pretty good. Gotta like the moor sets etc.

  38. Droid says :

    The Nightmare continues!

    Update…

Due to a collosal fuck up by the bloke that posted the Elm St series (he mislabeled the second part of New Nightmare as Freddie vs Jason) I’ve had to reshuffle the order.

    7. New Nightmare. This is a genuinely excellent fucking film. Almost, if not AS good as the original. It’s a terrific idea as a way to refresh a very tired series. And the scene on the highway is unbelievably good. Great film.

    9. The remake. Utterly pointless, but not as cretinously horrible as I feared. It’s strongest asset is that it’s mimicking an excellent film. It’s just, as I said, pointless. And if there’s any debate about practical vs cgi effects, then I would point to the scene in both films where Freddy appears in the wall over Nancy’s bed. In the first film it’s a chilling, menacingly creepy moment, in the remake it’s not any of those things and just looks like crap cgi.

If I finish acquiring FvJ in the next 15 minutes or so, I will watch that too. Not looking forward to it at all.

    Happy Halloween everyone.

  39. Jarv says :

    Alright:

Children of the corn 2- amazingly good. Mystic indian sucks balls, but it’s creepy and effective.

Children of the corn – Urban Harverst: Shite.

    • kloipy says :

yeah, I like the second one probably more than 1. The scene where the kid is whittling the corn figure and that guy’s nose pretty much explodes is great

  40. Droid says :

After a very lengthy session on the couch, I have worked through my issues and can happily say I am no longer plagued by my droidian nightmare.

    8. Freddy vs Jason. As dumb as a sack of rocks, but I have to say, this was enjoyable. Plenty of boob, and the fight scenes between Freddy and Jason were stupidly OTT. I was very surprised to find this one fun.

And now I’m off to bed. Sweet dreams!
