Burt Gummer’s Rec Room-September 2012 Archive

A gathering place for firearms enthusiasts, paranoid survivalists and those who worship at the Church of Chang

September, Summer has finished, but it’s a balmy 87 degrees all year round here in perfection. Perfect time of year to accumulate munitions in case society collapses when winter comes.

Disclaimer: This is the part of the Church that is the most no holds barred. None of it is intended with malice, and although it can on occasion seem a little bit fraught, it is banter rather than venom. So, be warned that this is like taking a naked swim in a piranha tank and not recommended for the faint of heart.

    The world’s first Koutchburger.

    Koutchburger

  2. Jarv says :

2 overs left and India are now 124.

In proper cricket, that’s 136ish, maybe 140. In silly cricket that’s 150 probably.

  3. Jarv says :

    Raining in Sri Lanka.

Aussies need to get above the run rate, and they’re about spot on.

    Duckworth Lewis FTW!

  4. Jarv says :

Hrmmm what about Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn?

I like this as an idea. Stage Mom and ex-Child star.

  5. Continentalop says :

    Watching Chronicle.

Is there any reason why this is shot docu-style?

    • Droid says :

I actually thought the found footage style turned a potentially good movie into a bad one. There’s lots to like in the film. Just found footage ruins it.

      • Continentalop says :

Agree 100%. Great premise ruined by the shooting style.

Also, why is a style based on making things seem more realistic always makes the acting and performances feeling faker than hell?

      • Jarv says :

So much is like that. It’s irritating.

I am currently quite liking 21 jump st

  6. Continentalop says :

Perks of Being a Wallflower isn’t shit, but it isn’t great either. It just exist, that is the extent of its impact.

Emma Watson is probably the best thing about it though, to be honest.

  7. Continentalop says :

    Finished season 2 of Misfits.

The enjoyable moments are outweighed by the stupidity and lazy writing.

    And wankery.

  8. Continentalop says :

Thanks to recent viewings of Misfits, Kick Ass, Chronicle, Perks of Being a Wallflower and the first half of Super, my appreciation for Boy Wonder keeps growing.

It has already moved from a 2.5 to a 3 and is threatening to jump to a 3.5.

  9. tombando says :

Watched Along Came Jones w Gary Cooper and Loretta Young.. Fun spoof of typical Western, I enjoyed. William Durant and Dan Duryea are good in it too.

  10. tombando says :

Always liked the destruction of the gas station scene in Mad mad World, Winters vs Kaplan/Stang. Very funny.

  11. Continentalop says :

Man, the more I think about Misfits, the more I realize what a shitty show it is. For a superhero series, they barely use their powers or are involved in anything remotely like a superhero scenario. It isn’t superhero pastiche, parody, deconstructionism or revisionism, it is superhero drag, where the are supposedly dressing up the show as something about powers but they are just an excuse for setting up whacky situations easily. The writing is really fucking lazy.

Compare it to Veronica Mars, where you have a high school girl acting as a hardboiled detective. Not only does the series cover a major case over the course of the season (Lily’s murder in season 1, the bus crash in 2), but also a number of subplots, b-plots, and character relationships, AND have her involved in a self-contained case each episode. VM and Misfits have the same running time, but VM is able to accomplish so much more than just cheap sex situations and obnoxious jokes.

    • Xiphos0311 says :

Man you are so right about VM. I’ve been re-watching the first season over the last few weeks since I haven’t seen it in years and it struck again just how well structured that series was. Excellent show Kristen Bell has never matched the worked she did there but then again she hasn’t had the strong writing, plotting and quality production staff working behind her either. plus there is that whole Dax Sheppard thing.

      • Continentalop says :

Yeah, I’m about to rewatch it as well. Realized I missed two episodes in season 3, was going to just watch those, hit stop about 5 minutes in and said “Fuck it. Time to revisit the series.” I’m seriously hard pressed to think of a series I like better in the last 10 years. And you so right about how well structured it is. That show should be the template for any genre TV series.

And I love Kristen Bell, but I wonder if she can really act. I mean, besides playing herself. Veronica is basically Kristen if she was just slighlty smarter, mentally tougher and went through some dark shit. I think she really lucked out getting a part that fit her so well (and I am sure they rewrote it to fit her better).

Still, her career probably would be better right now if she wasn’t latched on to that unfunny anchor Dax who is dragging her down.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Agree. for any shows that have season long arcs VM is the standard for how they should be run.

The other thing I thought about watching VM is the theme song, Used to be Friends by the Dandy Warhol’s. What I got to thinking about was other shows that use a song by a band instead of an instrumental intro that was as dead on as the one in VM, I’ll I came up with was California by Phantom Planet used in The OC and Save Me by Remy Zero for Smalllville.

      • Jarv says :

Theres loads. Barenakedladies on big bang theory, hell even the X-files was mark snow.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Wasn’t the song for BBT written specifically for the show? I thought I read that somewhere. What I meant and didn’t explain to well was using songs out there already for TV show themes. Used to be friends was dead on for Veronica Mars.

      • Continentalop says :

I have to admit the theme song for Misfits, “Echo” by Rapture, is perfect. In fact the opening credit sequence is awesome.

If only the show was just as good…

      • Jarv says :

        Ah, gotcha now.

When I’m through with you on Damages works out really well.

There are quite a lot- the Wire (First Series) had a great one as well.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Damages theme is from a song didn’t know that. House’s instrumental opening is from a massive attack song I think.

      • Droid says :

The Friends song perfectly captures the tone of the show. Cheesy, generic pop for the masses.

Also the “I Don’t Wanna Be” song on One Tree Hill is a good fit for that show.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Never seen OTH and while you could never get away from Friends when it was on I forgot about that one.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Also It seems to me the old WB and UPN and the current CW programming relied heavily on using songs as themes for shows.

      • Droid says :

Also, I know it’s not strictly an opening credits song, but the Wayward Son song over the SN “Then” bit at the start of the show is a really good fit. Funny that all these shows seem to be on CW.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

yeah the road so far using Wayward Son especially the first sentence is great.

  12. tombando says :

Watched Anna Karina w Viv Leigh and Ralph Richardson. Zzzzzzzzz dull. He was good but iit was just a costume drama that dragged.

  13. tombando says :

I lked Sir Ralph Richardson in the Four Feathers, a really good if semi ignored classic from the thirties. Aubrey Smith is fun in there too, General McBragg routine and all that.

  14. Jarv says :

I can’t do a new rec room on this stupid system my PC at work uses now. Pah.

    Weekend viewing:

    21 Jump St. Good
    Gamer. Utter shit
Sex and Lucia. Good but a bit porny
    Jamon Jamon. Good.

Much better weekend all in all.

  15. Continentalop says :

So after this weekend I only have Defendor and Griff the Invisible left for my non-super super-hero series. So far I rank them BOY WONDER (the movie is slowly improving in rank each day)>>SUPER>>>KICK ASS. Also saw CHRONICLE which sucked.

I also saw a shit load of TV

First 2 episodes of Boardwalk Empire (I think most people here hated it but I really dig it).
    The latest Doctor Who
    Copper
And a shit load of Misfits (which I have already mention).

    • Jarv says :

Not a fan of Super at all. I think it’s mean spirited shit and worse than Kick Ass.

      • Continentalop says :

I saw it as mean, not mean spirited. And I found Boltie 10x more entertaining than Hit Girl.

Super for me was a poor man’s effort at Taxi Driver. A failure but at least interesting. Kick Ass was hipster bullshit IMO.

      • Continentalop says :

Both are vastly inferior to BOY WONDER, anyhow.

      • Jarv says :

If you take out the grimy Rape scene, then I’d go with Super as mean and not mean-spirited. But that rape, Boltie’s death and the dreadful ending got to me really badly. I’d Orangutan of Doom Super. Hated it.

Kick Ass sucked balls as well, but didn’t make me want to punch someone.

      • Continentalop says :

The rape by Boltie was horrible, but her death actually didn’t bother me. To me it was saying “Hey, you want to play at superhero you’ll probably die.” It was a reminder of the seriousness of the situation.

Now the death of the cop, that seemed mean-spirited. But overall, I wanted to punch someone for Kick Ass more than Super.

      • Jarv says :

The other thing about Super was the guy in the lead sucked balls something fierce. The only redeeming feature to it was K-Bacs. Again.

        Much like X-Foetus.

      • Continentalop says :

Kevin Bacon did nothing for me. I actually hated his character (I wished he played more of a straight role).

I hate to say it but I thought Ellen Page was the best thing in Super.

      • Continentalop says :

If I had to grade them:

        BOY WONDER ***
        KICK ASS *
        SUPER **
        CHRONICLE *

      • Droid says :

        Defendor
        Boy Wonder
        Chronicle
        Kick Ass

Haven’t seen Super. Refuse to because I know I’ll loathe it. Haven’t seen Griff.

      • Droid says :

Defendor and Boy Wonder are pretty much on par, but the Woody factor is the difference. Woody FTW!!!

      • Jarv says :

        Defendor>Griff>Kick Ass> Super.

    My weekend roundup…

Killing Them Softly… Terrific first 30 minutes. Mendelsohn is superb. Very late Golden Chang entry. He won’t win because no one else has seen it, but he deserves it. Pity that once Pitt enters the picture it does a gradual slide into not very good territory. Particularly bad are the scenes with Gandolfini. They go one forever, aren’t interesting, are basically an actors studio with Gando ranting endlessly and they’re utterly pointless. Then, after everything, the character doesn’t get “paid off”. He just disappears from the film with a few lines from Pitt. It tries to juxtapose the movie with Obama’s inauguration speech. I’m guessing there’s a point there, but to be honest, I couldn’t be arsed trying to figure out what it was, apart from the oft repeated (in the film) “We’re all on our own.” Bah. A huge disappointment. But it must be repeated. Mendelsohn is superb.

Fringe… First ep of season five. Good. No one watches it apart from Jonah, so no point talking about it. I’ll say this though. There’s a huge reason why the show declined in the ratings. Once the show got to about midway through season two, it became absolutely impossible for anyone to start watching it. You pretty much need to be in on the ground floor or don’t bother. Anyhoo, it was good. Probably my favourite weekly drama since SN has turned ordinary.

Watched a couple of pilot eps. Revolution, which is abysmal, won’t last, and I will not be continuing with. Last Resort, which was decent, and I’ll give it a few more eps to see where it goes.

Also watching a show called Continuum, which I will probably review for my Quantum Droid series once I’ve finished the first season. It’s only 10 eps long, and I’ve seen about 7 of them.

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.

But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

Emily Blunt as a special forces super soldier?

Anyhoo, this sounds like Battle Los Independence Source Code Day. And they’ve surely got to change the title. “All You Need is Kill” sucks.

  18. Continentalop says :

    Forgot to mention…

Copper had a mediocre episode tonight. 2 really good episodes now followed by just an average one. One of the problems with the show is that it doesn’t seem to have an overall direction. Also, he He is too little of a “copper” at times.

The writers of that show should really watch more Veronica Mars.

  19. Jarv says :

    Shit news:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2012/sep/28/mark-millar-superhero-fox

There goes any chance of a decent superhero movie from Fox for the foreseeable.

  20. Jarv says :

The Guardian are still pushing The Dark Knight Rises as conservative allegory nonsense.

  21. Jarv says :

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2012/sep/30/life-of-pi-review-film

Lots to say about this, as I’ve read the book:

that he may have just succeeded in rebranding himself as the Obama of world cinema

I don’t know what this means.

The film takes a while to get going, like someone roused from their morning meditation,

Daft, frankly. The shipwreck is in the first 2 chapters, so if it’s taking a while to get going, then it’s going to be astronomically dull

They are soon pacing around one other with the same mixture of wariness and hungriness last seen on the faces of Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Lee’s 2005 Brokeback Mountain.

What the fuck? He’s not trying to shag the tiger.

You see it both in the Zen minimalism of his compositions – check out the shots of sky reflected in a glassy ocean, the boat suspended in the middle as if hanging in thin air – and the sonar-like skill with which he sounds out the emotional depths of Martel’s tale. Lee’s pixels are animated by empathy.

Pretentious garbage. What he means is that it looks nice but is boring. Shock.

Smells like a turd that they’re making excuses for because it’s Lee

  22. Droid says :

Solomon Kane got released in the US on friday. Did any of you Yankee doodles go see it? Conti, Kane will 100% get you laid.

    • Jarv says :

      Yes!

All Americans have to see Dredd and Kane. Both will definitely get you some.

    • Jarv says :

That’s a good idea. You only need to hit repost, and add a new intro.

    • Continentalop says :

      With what gender?

      • Jarv says :

Girls. BUT and it’s a big but, it’s mostly unsubstantiated and some of the eye-witness testimony is terrible and not accurate. One guy said he spoke to a 14 year old girl that was with Saville, but he did it on the phone so had no way of substantiating her age.

16 is the age of consent in the UK, so there’s a high chance she was over.

Having said that, he was fucking odd, and I would not be surprised in the slightest were it true.

It’s tough to say, because it didn’t come out until after he was well dead.

      • Droid says :

        Dubious at best.

      • Jarv says :

I’m not saying he wasn’t suspect- and he was so fucking odd that I honestly wouldn’t be surprised.

        Seriously weird and creepy dude.

Having said that, he’s dead, he can’t refute the story, so you need a bit better evidence to string someone up than someone’s half remembered anecdote from 20 years ago that may or may not even have the accurate age.

I, personally, think he probably was, but it’s pure supposition on my behalf in that I think he’s creepy as fuck, haven’t seen the documentary, and thus haven’t heard the rest of the witnesses. I believe there’s a lot of them.

      • Droid says :

I was saying that a telephone call to someone is dubious. Not saying he was or wasn’t. Just that isn’t evidence enough to make a decision.

      • Droid says :

Why do we always seem to end up in convo’s about paedophiles?

      • Jarv says :

Dunno. Possibly because we keep finding out about new ones.

And it’s more interesting than Life of Pi.

      • Droid says :

Nothing is more interesting than Pie!

      • Jarv says :

        You channeling Koutch there?

      • Continentalop says :

I mean what gender for getting laid by watching Solomon Kane?

      • Jarv says :

        Women.

        Chicks dig Kane.

    • Jarv says :

It is not yet known how the man got into the predicament, which happened on the city’s Justice Street.

Aptly named street that one. Chubby bastard.

  23. Jarv says :

Jimmy Saville outed as Paedo apparently.

Well, he’s dead, so that’s utterly unprovable. I’m not sure he was to be honest, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

  24. Droid says :

I saw the trailer for the new movie from the director of Un Prophet last night. Looks interesting.

  25. Droid says :

Bopara is back in an England shirt in the tippity run. He must give good Brokeback that guy, cause there’s no other reason I can see for him constantly being selected.

  26. Jarv says :

Who’s that Menzies muppet playing for you convicts? Bits and pieces off break bowler, shitty batsman?

I find it weird that D. Hussey isn’t in the Aussie side. Mind you, looks like Watto is trying to win the entire tournament on his tod.

    • Droid says :

Menzies? What are you talking about? Australia only sent one guy over. A Mr. S. Watson Esq.

      • Jarv says :

Doesn’t look like you need anyone else, frankly.

      • Droid says :

As of yesterday, he was leading run scorer AND leading wicket taker in the comp. Four MOTM from four matches. Decent run of form. Hopefully he’ll continue, but if he doesn’t then the rest of the mob better perform.

      • Jarv says :

Cunt’s name is Maxwell, not Menzies. No idea who I was talking about.

      • Droid says :

Oh, MAXWELL! Not Menzies. Yeah, him.

        No idea.

      • Jarv says :

Thing about Watto in tippity run is that if he gets to 50 quickly and runs himself out, that’s a good batting performance. He’s played brilliantly so far.

      • Jarv says :

From what I’ve read I think he’s the new Steve Smith. Yet weirdly he’s keeping Hussey D out of the side.

        Your selectors are nuts.

      • Jarv says :

David Hussey? Mr. Cricket’s younger bro.

Apparently you prefer to just field 10 men than play him, which is strange.

      • Droid says :

Oh, I know who Master Cricket is. I read some rubbish rationale about not including him. Like he and someone else were too similar, and he was in poor form. So he lost out. Like they played the same role and it was a choice between the two. But really, that’s a bit of a silly rationale when you’re talking about the, or one of the, leading runscorer in this stupid version of the game.

  27. Jarv says :

Fuck me. I was only joking about Bopara as a bowler. They bloody are bowling him.

  28. Jarv says :

Christ, he only went for 3 in that over. Feck’s sake, Lankans, he’s gash.

  29. Jarv says :

Crikey. Swann on a hat-trick. Jayawardene and Sangakarra in consecutive balls.

  30. Jarv says :

    Now Broad’s on a hattrick.

    Crikey.

They’ll still make 160, which will put England out.

  31. tombando says :

I have seen this Jimmy Saville guy on old You Tube footage of T Rex or Tony Burrows or Paul Anka. Strange dude no doubt.
