Burt Gummer’s Rec Room July 2011 Archive

A gathering place for firearms enthusiasts, paranoid survivalists and those who worship at the Church of Chang

It’s July! Historically the time when Britain’s despicable fat slags from some disgusting northern urban hell-hole  depart to annoy those in Southern Europe.  It’s fucking hot all the time in Perfection, though. Just as well the bunker is fully air-conditioned and we’ve a good supply of beer.

Disclaimer: This is the part of the Church that is the most no holds barred. None of it is intended with malice, and although it can on occasion seem a little bit fraught, it is banter rather than venom.

Married to the mob is gash. Pure 1 Chang film and that’s purely for Dean Stockwell and Mercedes Ruehl.

It’s a zany mafia comedy that isn’t funny in the slightest. It wants to be screwball, but is actually just balls. Matthew Modine in particular is dreadful.

Fuck me, what a run this is: Xanadu, Fire and Ice, Cal, Dirty Dancing, Married to the Mob, Millenium. Tht’s 6 shit films out of 10.

Want a hanky, crybaby? You’ve got the 90’s coming up. Stop bitching.

    • Xiphos0311 says :

Not liking Dirty Dancing is prima facia evidence that you have granite where your heart should be. Personally I had the time of life and I owe all to the movie.

      • Jarv says :

I’m surprised that you like it- of all of us, it should rub you up the wrong way- it’s a pure left wing preach fest.

And a cretinous one- it makes avatar seem like balanced political commentary and clever as well

      • Xiphos0311 says :

I was joking. I have only seen DD twice once when it came out on video tape in 87 and I only “watched” it to get some play of a girl. The second time was in the late 90’s for the exact same reason as the first time. I remember almost nothing about it. What do they preach about?

      • Jarv says :

        From the top?

        Abortion.
Worker’s rights and standing up to the man.
        Egalitarianism.

There’s more, but I wrote the reveiw last night in a mood. Basically everything in that film is right wing= bad. Even douchebag waiter carries around a copy of the fountainhead.

      • Jarv says :

Thought so. But I’m a bit sensitive about this one, because Mrs. Jarv loves it. Even though she says that Jennifer Grey is a lousy dancer

      • Xiphos0311 says :

when does the review go up? I’ll save all my questions until then.

      • Jarv says :

        Tomorrow AM

      • Xiphos0311 says :

hey I’m all for workers rights I just fucking hate unions because all they are now is a continuing criminal enterprise. And there is no fucking way that government workers should be allowed to unionized because then it becomes collusion between workers and management against tax payers.

      • Jarv says :

I agree, but it’s highly patronising when it’s a 17 year old middle class girl lecturing the working class on how he needs to stand up to the bosses and if they ignore him, then he’s got to stand up a little bit more.

      • Droid says :

I’ve never bothered to read any Ayn Rand. What’s all the hubbub? Is her writing anything special?

      • Jarv says :

She’s a crap author, and basically THE right wing gospel- it’s all about taking responsibility for yourself (not necessarily a bad thing) and a real “I’m alright jack” attitude. Despicable.

    • Xiphos0311 says :

Only thing I remember about Married to the Mob was the awful Brooklyn accent by Pfifer and that they stuck her in booby outfits.

      • just pillow talk says :

Rule #173 for Werewolves on the Moon film production: If any hot actress has to wear clothing in a particular scene, she shall wear booby outfits.

    • Droid says :

Not to mention that Dirty Dancing is an important comment on social mores. It holds a mirror up to society and challenges us to confront our own prejudices.

  2. Xiphos0311 says :

I bid you gents a good day it’s now almost 1600hrs and I’ve been up for nearly 24 hrs. I think I’ll get some chow and grab some rack time.

  3. Droid says :

Is there a recently enforced rule in Hollywood that either Idris Elba or Ken Jeong must appear in every single movie? Because it sure as hell seems like it.

  4. Droid says :

So… what’s up with the Americans? They’re shooting themselves in the foot it seems. They really wanna solve their debt crisis and all that good stuff, but they really don’t wanna lose any of their cushy perks and benefits. You never know, maybe $14 TRILLION will fall from the sky and everything will get sorted out. Hey presto!

    • just pillow talk says :

Actually we don’t have cushy benefits like Europe does. Social Security ain’t much for most people. What benefits the American people should not be paying out the ass for is pensions for state and federal workers. They are so far skewed, it’s ridiculous.

They don’t want to touch Dept of Defense funds, they don’t want to raise taxes on the “job creators” aka the super rich.

No way can you just cut without raising some taxes, it’s impossible. I mean, so we have two wars going…and how did Dubya pay for it? It gave the American people tax cuts. WTF. There should have been a war tax or something to generate money to pay for the wars. The American people should have contributed something. And to not touch the super rich is fucking ridiculous since they are enjoying some of the lowest tax rates they’ve ever had while their incomes have exploded. To call them job creators is utter bullshit. Or I should say bullshit in that they didn’t create jobs here in the U.S., maybe third world countries they did.

      • Jarv says :

The US tax rate is ludicrously low- particularly regarding the Super Rich (TM). Trickle down economics is utter horseshit, and the answer for the US will be to inflate their way out of debt, something that will fuck over every single person that has ever saved anything.

      • Jarv says :

Also, the other thing to look at is corporation tax. The big American multinationals basically don’t pay it. There’s a fat chunk of revenue right there. Furthermore, I can make a really good argument for rolling back a lot of the state sector in the US as much as the UK- which we are doing (to much squeaking from the Unions, who see nothing wrong with the situation).

      • just pillow talk says :

All the fucking tax loopholes, tax breaks…need to be wiped away. I would favor a flat tax, but that would never fly over here. The effective tax rate for corporations always drops due to tax credits for such-and-such activity, all the tax scams (and they are to varying degrees) that the tax firms will whip up to save corporations money.

Fuck Reagan and every other fucking politician, lobbyists, corporations, etc.

      • just pillow talk says :

Not just corporate tax breaks/credits too, but for individuals. There should not be a tax deduction for having more kids, or having a larger mortgage for interest deduction. Wipe those away too (this coming from someone who takes full advantage of both).

      • Jarv says :

You sound dangerously like a commie pinko.

What, you hate ‘merica or something?

      • just pillow talk says :

I hate it when people get away with making bad decisions or rewarding companies with more money, and they don’t do anything worthwile with it besides line the wallets of their upper management.

      • Jarv says :

Rewarding failure? There’s far too much of it here.

      • Droid says :

Sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear. It was a stab at the politicians, and the super rich/big businesses they protect. Not the little guys who bear the brunt.

  5. Jarv says :

Droid- where did you get that Quantum Droid backing? I need it for the rating for Millenium?

  6. Xiphos0311 says :

    Some observations

    1. According to data from the IRS, CBO and other gooberment organizations every time they have lowered the marginal tax rates revenue, i.e. extorted money from citizens, has increased to The Feds and when marginal tax rates have been raised it decreased.

    2. How is that America, whose business has been claimed to be business have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world and China has one of the smaller ones? And anyways who really pays corporate taxes the corporation or the consumers? I’m not a businessman, oh wait I was, every time California or Arizona raised taxes on us(with California that was almost daily and theya re fiscally sound right?) we upped prices to cover the increase and passed it on to the consumer to cover the raise in prices for materials etc Plus I would be happy to get rid all the fucking stupid regulations that hamper the creation of business and there are thousands of them

    3. So isn’t the problem not so much “revenue” but spending? Considering every scumbag politicians claims to have “cut” spending but has only ever “slowed” ,some, the rate of growth for programs for a time and then increased spending overall?

    4. If spending is the problem then wouldn’t make sense to reform (and in my world get rid) the problem which is the Ponzi scheme of Social Security and Medicare and Medicade. each program had started off in the red and got worse as the years went on but provided a convenient slush fund to scumbag politicians?

    5. Want to save nearly a trillion overnight? Easy get rid of the dept. Of transportation, Education(why does the dept. of Education need weapons?), change the dept of Energy to the Dept of building nuclear power plants everywhere so kids grow hands out of their fore heads and the fucking lying scumbag environmentalists will plotz themselves to death.(that might be to long for the letter head) Make the dept of the interior actually do their job correctly, get rid HUD and some of the other ones I can’t remember right now. But this is a pipe dream since it’s virtually impossible to get rid of programs once they are enacted

    6. Stop all subsidies to foreign governments including underwriting European Banks.

    7. get out of the evil UN, World bank, IMF and every other parasitic organization the loves America’s money but won’t stop ceaselessly bitching about America.

    8. I’m all for changing the Defense Dept budget. I would first return all US serviceman from Roosevelt’s and Clinton’s wars that are in Europe. I think that saves at least 100+ billion. It also means that Germany goes wobbly and is unable to bail out any more EU members. It also means Italy and Portugal collapse overnight taking Spain, Ireland and the rest of the EU with it. Also The Balkans will go up in flames but I’m sure the proposed Anglo-Frank European expeditionary force can handle that right? Since they you know knocked off Gadaffi pretty fast. Then bring all the troops home from Truman’s war in Korea. The South Koreans are more Then able to take on the North. Stop all of Barry’s undeclared wars in Yemen, Syria et al. But what will really happen is they will gut further the armed forces and expect us to even more with less, mess with pay and take away promised benefits once again and then apply that one time savings over decades to claim a false surplus over those decades like Clinton did. meanwhile if nobody defends the country and the country disappears how can the citizens get all their “free” shit?

    9. there is more but I’m have to go to work.

10 when Barry took office spending when from 1.6 billion dollars a day to 4 has the increased government spending helped any? Well it bought GM and Chrysler for the UAW and it kept the unemployment rate under 8% like promised right?

  7. Continentalop says :

I really don’t like talking about politics, but here is a couple of things:

    1) Lower corporate taxes rates. As Xi said, America has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, and as long as we do some of the biggest companies are going to move their corporate offices to Ireland, Switzerland, or somewhere else with lower rates. I would rather have 10% of billions of Google or Pepsi money than 30% of nothing.

    2) But also raise taxes on dividends and get rid of the tax cuts for the rich. Hell, bring back Reagan era tax rates for the rich. Unlike moving your corporate offices overseas, it is unlikely is going to change their citizenship or residency because of tax rates. Plus, the majority of what the US does is actually safeguard and protect the rich’s property and well being. Public roads and highways and transportation help move your workers and your products across America. Time to realize the benefits the federal government does for the rich and have them pony up.

    3) Realize that America is fucked in the long run because we are no longer a manufacturing based country with a strong blue-collar middle class. in 1979 “Wal-Mart employed 21,000 workers”, “General Motors employed 618,000”, and “the average CEO…was paid 35.2 times what an average worker was paid”. Flash forward to 2008: “Wal-Mart employed 1.4 million”, “General Motors employed 92,053”, and “the average CEO…was paid 275.4 times what an average worker was paid…”

    4) While I think Obama has to cut Federal spending, spending under Bush went from from $1.9 trillion a year to $3.2 trillion. Since Obama took over it has risen to $3.8 trillion ($600 million) but has declined since the beginning of the year I believe (and a huge portion of that spending was his $800 million stimulus package).

    • Continentalop says :

Also, I like Barrack Obama. Not so much for his political beliefs (although I find him to be much more moderate and pragmatic than people give him credit for, which makes it easy for me to agree with many of the things he says) but for his political skills. The guy is absolutely Machiavellian at times and someone I find the Republicans and Conservatives constantly underestimate (much like Dems did with Reagan in the 80s).

    • Xiphos0311 says :

Hehehehehehehe the new Navy work uniform looks even worse on screen then it does in real life.

When did we unmothball the Iowa class battleship? the last one was retired in like 92 after the Gulf war, which was a mistake in my opinion, but they never bothered to asked me.

      • Continentalop says :

Speaking of navy uniforms, saw a bus load of sailors walking around Hollywood tonight. Summer whites still look at gay as hell, but man, the ladies uniforms sure looked good. And so did the female sailors, I shit you not.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Compared to the service dress whites(the bell bottoms with the goofy hat)the summer whites look butch as hell, for a good humor ice cream man

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Yeah there’s some decent looking sailor trim out there, especially Officers.

      • Continentalop says :

Since this is Hollywood, it was a gay man’s paradise as they walked by. They were pretty much all young guys so I could tell they were feeling pretty awkward with all the male attention (and there was a lot of gay guys out because I guess Lady GaGa did some sort of show or performance at Hollywood and Highland or something).

        “Hello Sailor!”

      • Xiphos0311 says :

It’s the Navy they revel in male attention.

      • Continentalop says :

Fuck, I revel in male attention. Means I must be looking good because no one is more shallow than a guy, no matter what orientation.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Unlike sailors your not reveling in male attention for the purpose of sexual gratification.

    Last night I watched…

Batman Returns… Love this movie. But I’m not really sure I love it as a Batman movie. I love it because it’s like some sort of bizarre, over the top, weird, crazy fan fiction. It uses the Bob Kane characters as a starting point and moulds them into a carnival freak show. It’s highly imaginative, immensely creative and very, very dark. Name the last big budget Hollywood film you can say that about?

A funny comment by Burton on the making of… He was in a meeting with WB after BR came out and he was spitballing ideas for a third Batman movie. His ideas were greeted with less enthusiasm than he expected, and after a while, he stopped and said “You guys don’t really want me to do another Batman movie, do you?” And… we got Batman Forever…

It’s Friday. I’m trudging through the last hours before my 4 day weekend. I’m bored. Where is my jester!? I demand to be entertained!

    • Jarv says :

Go and read my superb 2000 word deconstruction of Dirty Dancing, then.

      • Droid says :

Read it. Currently being entertained by Englands batting.

      • Jarv says :

Not as entertained as I was by the Aussie squad selection. You’re now so desperate you’ve picked the fucking Adelaide GROUNDSMAN!!!

Total of 4 first clss games. Hilarious.

What the fuck has gone so wrong with Aussie cricket- still Hilfy has been dropped, and Katich (which is even funnier).

      • Droid says :

Meh. Doesn’t really bother me. It’s all interim stuff. There are no spinners and no prospects. So you get an Ashley Giles style placeholder until someone better comes along.

Now, what’s really funny is the team that is vying for the number one ranking in test cricket is currently going at less than 2 runs an over. Worthy candidates indeed.

      • Jarv says :

        It’s swinging like a fucker.

Seriously, selecting the fucking groundsman? Mate, I reckon if you moved back you’d have a shot at the Aussie national side. I went through years of this misery with England, and when I heard Steve Waugh (of all people) saying that the Aussies should be copying England it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

      • Droid says :

Keep calling him a groundsman, if it helps. But he just toured Zimbabwe with Australia A and reportedly played very well. It was in the one dayers, but the alternatives are Steve Smith (shit), Hauritz (okay, but 30 so not going to get better), and Krejza (shit). So you’ve got Beer and Lyon selected, because they’re younger and showed promise on the Zimbabwe tour. You’ve also got other debutants in a couple of quicks, Pattinson and Copeland. Hughes is getting another go opening with Watson. And Khawaja’s in the team (at 6, he should be at three and Ponting drop down).

So, instead of going with the same old group, they’re giving a bunch of newbies a go. The changes we were all calling for are beginning to be implemented. But yeah, most people not in the know are harping on about the fact that Lyon had a day job while playing cricket.

      • Jarv says :

        Hughes. Still.

He’s crap and needs time in state cricket to get his technique sorted out. The bowling is the problem though. When you’re picking an off-spinner who’s played a handful of first class games, then it’s a hail mary selection. Beer is crap as well.

It’s going to be a long journey out of the doldrums for you lot with this idiotic selection panel. Personally, I’d move Watson to 6, find a proper openier to play with Katich, drop ponting and seriously consider dropping Clarke. The bowling, well, fuck knows.

      • Droid says :

        I’d move Watson to 6

Move the opening batsmen, averaging 50 over the past two years (highest of any Australian batsman)? Yeeeessssssss….

find a proper openier to play with Katich

Katich is 36 and no longer plays for Australia. So this is irrelevant. Harsh choice, sure. But you’ve got to move on some time.

        drop ponting

Fair case to be made for this.

        seriously consider dropping Clarke

No case to be made for this at all. He hasn’t actually had a test in charge since officially being made captain only six months ago. One short one-day series against the Banga’s. Plus, who the hell do you replace him with? When you’re calling for a bit of stability and the introduction of new, younger players, how do you rationalise dropping your newly appointed Captain? A bit ridiculous, don’t you think?

      • Jarv says :

Katich is the ideal place holder until a Shield batsman makes a proper case. Hughes is not the answer. Watson is a fantastic player, but he’s potentially so destructive and has the ability to rescue a situation that I’d want him coming in lower down. Particular with Ponting and Clarke in at 3 and 4. I’d still drop Ponting though.

Clarke has lost it badly. He’s covered with injury problems and was a lousy captain in the Sydney debacle. But I do take the point that who the fuck do you replace him with.

The problem the Aussies seem to have is that they’ve bolloxed succession completely. They’ve a laughable bowling attack, reliant on the most unreliable player in the world firing, a batting attack that creaks badly, and has some players (Hughes) that are clearly not up to it. However, the same is about to happen to India (good).

England, on the other hand, having been shite for the better part of two decades, seem to have finally put together a solid, uninspiring, but fucking ruthless side. I’d still rate South Africa as the best (India are not, and I don’t care what the rankings state). The interesting thing, though, and it makes me feel a bit better is that the two best sides, South Africa and England are the two sides with the best bowling attacks. The likes of Sri Lanka who have awesome batting and gash bowling and India (ditto) are on the slide.

      • Jarv says :

        Fucking KP has gone. Shite.

You need to win the toss at Trent Bridge. Batting first is a fucking nightmare. The ball swings like nobody’s business.

      • Jarv says :

Also on this point- Watson was an interim measure after Hughes failed so badly. It was a shot in the dark selection, and a fucking brilliant one. However, the highest averaging Aussie is 50 in the last few years and England have several players, including one Ian Ronald Bell that average over 60 in that period.

I really rate Watson as a batsman and a bowler, he’s superb. Probably the only Aussie outside of Hussey that you can make a legitimate case to get in the England side. That’s some fucking change for me.

      • Droid says :

        KP = shit.

      • Jarv says :

Yes, double ton on a swinging pitch the match before. He’s clearly crap.

Although he does seem to only post one good score per series nowadays.

      • Jarv says :

The Guardian says that Trent Bridge is the second hardest ground in the world to bat at. 300 will be a good score if they make it.

Need to bowl first at Trent Bridge. Always. I remember seeing Hussein and Thorpe put the Aussies to the sword (once) in the 90’s at Trentr Bridge. However the damage was done by Gough and Caddick when the Aussies batted. It was little victories like that that kept me going in the 90’s.

      • Droid says :

The thing you’re not taking into account, is that you have played a couple of test series since the ashes and we’ve not played any. So this is the first stage of team changes. They’re not going to dump the entire team in one go. I fully expect them not to settle on a team until mid-late 2012. Because these next two years are all about forming a team that will win back to back Ashes. It’s all anyone cares about.

Really, if it wasn’t for the marquee of the Ashes, test cricket would be dead.

      • Jarv says :

England v India, Australia v India and England v SA as well, and, of course, India v Pakistan. To be fair.

You’re right, though, It is the English summer, but you lot were so abject in the Ashes, that you need a serious piece of rebuilding. Have you got Sri Lanka or India first? If it’s Sri Lanka, I don’t think that will help, because their bowling is crap and the likes of Ponting could well pad their average. Mind you India’s bowling is crap as well outside of the Subcontinent.

(Having just typed that, that was a really good ball).

Ponting needs to go. Seriously. He’s always been a mediocre captain, but his batting has gone as well now. I’d pick that little Pakistani Kid you had at Sydney (Khaja?), He’s got all the shots, and looks like he could be seriously classy. I wouldn’t let either Hughes or Johnson (particularly Johnson) anywhere near the test side. Although I do apprecate you lack alternatives.

      • Droid says :

I don’t rate that innings at all. Fucking plodding shit against a shitty bowling line-up minus their one half decent bowler. They, um… bowled their keeper. Yep, tough stuff. If, for the first 150, he played like he did for the last 50, then I’d rate it. Instead he took 15,000 deliveries and two days to get there. If England had lost then it quite rightly would’ve been viewed negatively as poor batting.

        England enthusiastically overrate mediocrity.

      • Jarv says :

Bollocks. I was there. The atmosphere was like soup and the ball was swinging fucking miles. It was a good innings. Most un KP like.

The proof is that it was almost 100 runs more than any other batsman managed on either side.

      • Droid says :

Khawaja’s been picked. But he’s going in at 6 (so they say). I say that’s a mistake and if you must play Ponting at all then he’s got to drop down the order.

I’ve always maintained Ponting was a crap captain.

      • Jarv says :

        Yup. Dreadful,

For a lot of his career, though, he didn’t need to be any good though.

      • Jarv says :

I will add another caveat here. If you are going to insist on picking Johnson, then I seriously think you need to consider 5 bowlers. Because if he goes wrong (which is seriously likely) then you effectively have to bowl the test with 3 front line bowlers. Watson does pick up a lot of the slack, though.

      • Droid says :

Just because you were there, doesn’t mean your opinion is automatically correct.

He scored a lot of runs, yes. But he had the luxury of not bothering to set his team up with those runs a lot quicker. He was going at .30 strike rate (less for a while) for a long, long time. That’s not good enough. And an innings like that puts pressure on the bowlers. Against India’s batting line-up you don’t need extra pressure. But England’s bowlers delivered the goods, so it excused the slow pace of the batting. You cannot rely on that every time.

      • Jarv says :

Not true. He actually accelerated. The last 50 came off about 30 balls. England’s success is built on the bowlers NOT the batsmen, because the batsmen are so fucking flaky.

The revelation of that match was Broad. Someone’s clearly given him a bollocking and he was much better.

      • Droid says :

Bear in mind, I grew up in the Australian mindset of annihilating sides with fast paced batting.

      • Jarv says :

This is true. You grew up with one of the two greatest sides ever to play the game. Stuffed full of one-off players, the likes of which we won’t see again.

I grew up in English conditions, where you have to play the atmosphere as much as the ball- it can swing that much. That’s why I rate tha innings. It was bang on for the conditions, and as the cloud cleared he got faster.

      • Droid says :

Yikes. 2 wickets in 4 balls. England are on the ropes here. Can the sherminator get them out of trouble?

      • Jarv says :

I maintain that 300 will be a seriously good score here. COME ON BELL.

        Humph.

In a way, it’s lucky Tremlett is injured, because now England bat down to 10.

I wouldn’t pick Morgan, ever. He’s not a test player.

      • Droid says :

I wouldn’t pick Johnson. I’d stick him back in state cricket until he comes good and shows consistency. If he ever did.

      • Droid says :

        Like I said…

If, for the first 150, he played like he did for the last 50, then I’d rate it.

Last 50 came off 30, you say… Gee, that doesn’t prop up the strikerate or anything…

      • Jarv says :

The first 50 came off a lot, the second 50 about half the first, and the third about half the second. He paced his innings- which is a bit of a lost art.

      • Jarv says :

Fuck. This is terrible. they may as well swing the bat. All out 150.

      • Droid says :

300? You’ll be lucky to make 100 here. Crikey!

  12. ThereWolf says :

Quick question: Where’s the best place to go for past film release dates (by month)?

Cheers. I’ll check back later. Bloody work.

  13. koutchboom says :

WHEW! OK I may have finally found the virus that was slowing my work computer to a stop pretty much.

Saw 30 Minutes or less last night, Twas OK nothing special, like an Apatow produced movie with better trimming and editing. Not as good as Zombieland, my wife said she liked it more though?

Really if you hate Danny McBribe you won’t like it, BUT IF YOU REALLY like one of the female stars of the TV show Rules of Engagement I suggest you check it out for her cameo.

    • Jarv says :

Wotcha Koutch. How’s the new job?

    • Droid says :

I like Danny McBride. I’m not too interested in 30MOL though. I’ll see it on dvd.

When’s Eastbound and Down coming back!?

      • koutchboom says :

Yeah there’s no real reason to see it in theaters, it’s a much smaller movie than Zombieland. Its more like Pineapple Express than anything, just doesn’t run into a “OK this scene has been going on for 5 minutes now lets move on”.

New jobs pretty good, I actually have to produce shit here soooo I can’t just dick off on the internet all day, BUT now that I may have fixed my computer I should be able to do more. Fucking IT guys were like “nah there are no viruses on them I reformatted it right before you used it” so he wasn’t willing to even look at it. He just told me they were naturally slow.

I do like how I can role in whenever I want pretty much and leave so long as I put in my 8 hours, so I’m out the door most days before 5 just skip lunch or plow down some food at the desk.

  14. koutchboom says :

OHHH any FYI for all the folk living in the states Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One is showing tonight on TCM. Been really wanting to see that for some time. It sounds very interesting. Here’s the plot info:

Decades before reality TV took hold, director William Greaves made this fiction-documentary hybrid that exposes the high artifice of filmmaking. The action revolves around a pair of actors rehearsing a breakup scene in New York’s Central Park. One camera crew is shooting them, another is filming the film crew, and yet another is documenting the film within a film. Soon, actors tire, equipment breaks, and the crew even stages a mini-rebellion.

  15. koutchboom says :

You guys getting the show WIlfred over there? WIth Frodo?

Chris Klien is in it, he needs to get his shit together so he can start getting Jon Hamm’s roles.

Also the show is pretty funny, I watched an episode after 30 Minutes or Less last night and I was like…yeah this was funnier than that movie.

MY wife however gets all pissed when i don’t love some comedy, because she’s like YOU LAUGHED all the way through it! Its like well yeah I’ll have the best time I can with it its fun and silly and I laugh at everything doesn’t mean I loved it.

    • Droid says :

We’ve started the original version. Watched the first two eps and we’ve already incorporated a couple of quotes into our vernacular. It’s very strange, but it works. I wonder how the US version differs. I’ll check it out after I complete the Aussie version.

      • koutchboom says :

Yeah they are showing the Aussie version this weekend I’m gonna check it out to compare. Its a strange show, but Wood and that Aussie work good together, he’s really funny is Wilfred the only thing he’s done?

      • Jarv says :

Chris Klein has a lifetime pass.

        NASH OUT.

      • koutchboom says :

I KNOW, I just wish he got some bigger roles so the rest of the world can bask in his glory.

      • Jarv says :

Seriously, Chris Klein lives his life because “it just had to be done”.

That’s his mantra. Particularly when gratuitously jamming his tongue down women’s throats.

        Hehehehehe

Actually, on this note, I would like to nominate the chick that plays Catalina in My Name is Earl as a potential Astrodyke.

      • koutchboom says :

Yeah she’s good. The chick in Wilfred could, and the chick in 30 minutes of Less, now that we know what she’s willing to do for a role could work.

      • Droid says :

He might have done, but I’ve never seen him before.

  16. Droid says :

Jarv, any thoughts on meeting point for tomorrow?

  17. Droid says :

Really want to see Point Blank

“Point Blank” is an exhilarating adrenaline rush with breakneck momentum so shrewdly calculated that you could imagine its French director, Fred Cavayé, standing by with a heart-rate monitor. Just when the beats per minute have accelerated beyond 160, and you are gasping for air, a momentary respite gives you a few seconds to wipe your brow, catch your breath and take a sip from your water bottle. Then you’re shoved back into the race. I can’t recall another thriller that has maintained this kind of velocity without going kablooey and losing its train of thought.

    • Xiphos0311 says :

They made a break neck momentum filled movie about body armor? I guess they really have run out of ideas.

  18. Droid says :

For the Game of Thrones fans…

HBO executives stressed their commitment to making Game of Thrones authentic to George R.R. Martin’s books and to keeping the show going as long as Martin keeps writing — which is a considerable commitment given Martin’s prolific nature.

Addressing critics at the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour, Richard Plepler, co-president of HBO, said Martin is happy with the networks adaptation of his work.

“The truth is when you see how thrilled he is with the production, we know we’ve succeeded partially by his satisfaction,” said Plepler. “We told George we’d go as long as he kept writing.”

    • Xiphos0311 says :

and as long as the checks are cashing….

    • Col. Tigh-Fighter says :

Well its filming now in Norr’n Ireland. It seems every film crew person based over there is working on it. As a side thing, it will be a HUGE boast for the Northern Ireland economy. NI has a lower per capita than rest of UK.

So more cash in theirs (and ours) coffers is never a bad thing,

  19. koutchboom says :

Also Xi you’ll be happy to know that in the continued success of tradition Michael Peña is masterfully under utilized in 30 Minutes Or Less.

  20. koutchboom says :

Hey Echo you saw AVC does Han die in that? Or does he end up becoming the reluctant hero to save his daughter/son in the end?

  21. koutchboom says :

    FUCK YEAH XI!!!!

MORE Michael Peña as guy number 13 in ANOTHER robbery movie!

    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/50590

    • Droid says :

Yeah, that movie looks a bit shit.

      • koutchboom says :

I think it looks fun, more fun that 30 Minutes, also its nice to see that Eddie Murphy trying again.

Ratner does decent little heist flicks.

      • Droid says :

Maybe. But judging from the trailer it looks a bit shit. Not really any laughs. The funniest thing was Murphy saying “‘sup?” at the end. And that was merely chuckleworthy.

      • koutchboom says :

WELL maybe they saved the good bits for the movie? I mean does every Ratner trailer need to have a black guy screaming “DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH” for you to be happy?

      • Droid says :

No. That makes me the opposite of happy. But a few laughs wouldn’t go astray.

  22. Droid says :

    Memphis Belle with black guys!

  23. Droid says :

    Um…. So who’s doing 100% Boll?

  24. Lord Bronco says :

Just popping In-been busy. we financed and shot a movie last week-it’s in post as we speak. Two more in pipeline for august. I’m finishing the storyboards for my first feature-it’s a doozy-we shall see.

A friend on twitter asked about Lifeforce be so kind as to send me the link for that review Jarv. My friend just got flown to London, for his first overseas-gratis! Then he heads to Berlin. Exciting times.

And people say twitter is weird, it is, until you get hang of it…

Oh I’ve been bashing my way through Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series-I’m up to Trafalgar. Got the entire Joe Abercrombie series, and am studiously avoiding George RR Martins “Dances With Dragons” which I’m told is mint.

I figure I’ve got another 4 or 5 years for book 6 and 5-10 years for book seven.

But what about the Dinklage?!? Bugger!

Hope you chaps are all doing alright, i’m off to Watch Captain America

    Peace!

PS- I will definitely watch Battleship on cable. as one wonky peep said: “BattleShit”.

You sank my Battleshit LB says to toilet.

    Cheers!

  25. tombando says :

So apparently Polanski has a new movie coming out, ‘Carnage’. What’s the general consensus around here about him? I liked the Pianist, I agree he shoulda done 20 years (at least) for what he did to the girl back when, etc.

    • Col. Tigh-Fighter says :

Yup, I feel the same. He’s made some good films, but this wasnt a subjective crime. He should have been extridited back from France and done his time. Fucking crappy US/French weird relationship.

As a kid I loved watching The Fearless Vampire Killers. Such a fun film, and he acted great in it. The Pianist was a good film too. And Chinatown, of course!

    • Xiphos0311 says :

My take on Polanski is I won’t support a short eyes in any way. Fuck him, and for that matter, fuck that scumbag coward Jack Nicholson. I bet that hump got a taste of the girl Polanski eviscerated. Two wonderful pieces of shit those two baby rapers are.

      • Continentalop says :

I only won’t see movies made after Polanski fled. Sure he is a POS, but when he made Chinatown, The Fearless Vampire Killers, MacBeth or Rosemary’s Baby he had yet to commit a crime, so I refuse to also punish the great work that Robert Towne, Nicholson, Dunaway, Mia Farrow, and the rest did on his other movies. But that is just my opinion on the subject.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

There’s no way that pervert hadn’t indulge in his sick bent pedophilia before he beat, raped and sodomized a 13 year old girl in scumbag Nicholson’s hot tube and bedroom. NO WAY

      • Jarv says :

Don’t forget that he drugged her first.

        Fucking scumbag.

      • Continentalop says :

Oh, I’m pretty sure he did but he hadn’t ever been charged before so no one knew he bent that way. Anyone who worked for him BEFORE the 1977 case didn’t sign on to work with a child molester/rapist, so I don’t think I can punish them for Polanski’s crimes.

John Huston is no child rapist, and neither is Robert Towne, Faye Dunaway, Ruth Gordon or John Casavettes, They just had the misfortune of unknowingly working with a sex offender. What Polanski did shouldn’t prevent people from seeing their great work in Chinatown and Rosemary’s Baby.

But for those who worked with him after 1977, sorry, you knew he was a convicted child rapist and fugitive. You get no sympathy and I’m not going to watch you in one of his movies.

      • tombando says :

What did Jaack have to do w/ it? not that I’m surprised-he was involved w/ whatever garbage Robert Evans was doing at the time too…

      • Continentalop says :

tombando, it happened at Jack’s pad.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Tom like Conti mentioned the aggravated rape of a child and the viscious beating took place at scumbag Nicolsons’ house AND for at least the first part of it he was present then left. The Police report isn’t clear if he came back while it was still occurring. The way it’s written leaves it open to interpretation. What is a FACT is shit sucker Nicolson chose a pedo friend and not wanting to piss off anybody in Hollywood, over helping a forcibly intoxicated13 year from getting repeatedly raped, both vaginally and anally, by a scumbag pedo.

Personally I firmly believe that fat Nicolscumbag took his turn then helped Polanski by not saying anything. Nicolson should have been buried under the jail with Polanski and the girls mother, who pimped her out to a baby raper.

      • tombando says :

Ahhh Hollywood of the ’70’s, gotta love it……GAG.

  26. Continentalop says :

For Xi (continuing a trend we started last night somewhere else).

  27. tombando says :

Cowboys and Aliens–actually pretty good, a fun-filled big-budgeted B movie. It plays like a Twilight Zone episode, where they mix in genres, play it straight and just go along with it to the logical(?) conclusion. I enjoyed. Def. a Matinee though. James Bond carries it, and is really the star. I thought the Aliens were, ummm, rather familiar w/ Mel Gibson in a prior life, shall we say? not that original or whatever, but whatever-it worked for me.

Check it out. Ford is fine, I wish he’d do more like this.

  28. ThereWolf says :

Just finished watching a film called ‘The Secret In Their Eyes’. Never heard of it before, or if I have I’d forgotten the title.

    Very good indeed.

    • Xiphos0311 says :

Wolf over at Fatburgh there is an article about a new Michael Biehn movie called The Victim coming out that he directed. It’s supposed to be a grindhousey affair.

      • ThereWolf says :

Yeh, I read about ‘The Victim’ some time ago, seems to have taken eons to come out. It did look grungy.

He’s also in one called ‘The Divide’ – Bart’s reviewing it for PCN, if he hasn’t already…

  29. koutchboom says :

Man all this rape talk has made me thirsty here check out this bad ass new cover for the up coming Batman and Robin Comic:

  30. koutchboom says :

Also anyone ever seen this poster for Silent Hill?

  31. Toadkillerdog says :

The jets got Plax! FUCK! Fuck the jets and fuck polanski too!

  32. Toadkillerdog says :

ok, I am going to post this here because no one ever reads what I post late at night on a sunday…I saw the smurfs movie. my wife and I took our nieces to see it, and uh, I actually laughed a few times

  33. Toadkillerdog says :

Just saw that smurfs tied cowboys and aliens, oops, my bad

  34. just pillow talk says :

We’ll try and green-light that Snorks movie for ya Toad…

Taxi Driver review emailed to ya Jarv…no hurry in posting it since you’ve got a bunch of your reviews posted.

    • Continentalop says :

Dying with anticipation to hear your opinion on it JPT.

    • Toadkillerdog says :

      Ha! Too funny Pillows. Snorks?
Ya know, the smurfs movie was not bad, the kids laughed, although it did not put me too sleep as i hoped, it did have some chuckles and one or two laugh out loud moments. Neil pat Harris was passable, but i tell ya, the scenes with his pregnant wife, well just did not come off as believable to the adults!

  35. Continentalop says :

Saw Cowboys and Aliens as well tonight.

    Was. Not. Impressed.

  36. Jarv says :

Fucking Cricket is magnificent today (and yesterday to be fair). What the Indians did was an amazing gesture, and England are scoring at a fantastic rate now.

  37. just pillow talk says :

Besides watching Taxi Driver, I watched Potter films Order of the Phoenix and The Deathly Hallows. I liked the 5th one, a lot more than I see to remember. The 6th was meh though, which is funny since Yates directed both.

    • Jarv says :

I haven’t done this in a while, but here are things I’ve seen not on the Birthday List:

Nude Nuns with Big Guns. Would be entertaining, but far too rapey.

Tron: Best thing about it? Light Cycles.

Tron Legacy: Best thing about it? The Soundtrack. Second best thing? Still Light Cycles. Other than that? Meh.

      Dinocroc v Supergator: hilariously awful.

Sharktopus? Is it a shark? Is it an Octopus? Hilarious.

      • just pillow talk says :

So Dinocroc vs. supergator is worth a look? Best giant reptiles doing battle movie yet?

      • Jarv says :

Not saying a lot, but there is a sense of fun to it that isn’t in the other ones. Still too much crap with humans and not enough mutant reptile action.

The fight itself is a bit of a let down.

  38. Col. Tigh-Fighter says :

Watched Captain America. I loved it. Thought it was really good. All the negatives I heard about not being Nazi enough and stuff. Bollocks!

Chris Evans was brilliant. I thought it was excellently directed, and all in all was a bloody good romp.

Also watched Green Lantern. It was absolutely, and completely and utterly, and big fat resounding OK. Middle of the road. Unremarkable. Peter Skarsgaard was pretty good though.

Think I’ve forgotten the rest of it.

Also rewatched Sky High (dont ask!). Wasnt as much fun as I remember. Although it did star Jim Rash (Dean Pelton from the brilliant Community) as a gibbering jester type side-kick to a long haired Mary Winstead. The years have not been kind….

    • just pillow talk says :

Wow, both you and Toad have raved about Capt America. Shame I probably won’t see it in the theaters…

      • Toadkillerdog says :

It is outstanding pillows, right now it number 1 on my comic book movie list

      • just pillow talk says :

So the question remains: will the Avengers actually be good or is it going to be a trainwreck? You’ve got Capt America, which has gotten good reviews, Thor I guess seems like it was passable/okay, Hulk, which isn’t good, Iron Man 1.0 good, 2.0 not as good….

      • Jarv says :

        Crap.

So far: IM1= OK, IM2= Shit. Le Hulk= Meh at best. Thor= OK, Cap= Good.

Plus it is a fucking big ensemble movie.

      • tombando says :

Yeah I liked it too. Think Rocketeer w/ bigger guns and $$$. Worth your time.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Hmm, well methinks the Avengers movie has a damn good chance of being very good.

IM1 = Truly Great (Iron Man remains my favorite comic book hero from childhood, so I was skeptical it could be done well).
IM2 = I may be in a minority on this, but upon further viewing I love this film.
Le Hulk = Passable. Good fight with Abom uh, the other Abom
Thor = Good, very entertaining. Better than I expected it to be
Captain America = Outstanding. Just a great great flick on all levels

    • Continentalop says :

I still don’t get how they can’t make a good Hulk movie in Hollywood. There are four classic comic book characters IMO: Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and the Fucking Hulk!

I mean, he is a guy who when he gets angry turns into a huge, retarded green monster with super-strength and rage issues, who often fights other monsters! How do you blow that?!?

      • Jarv says :

Give him either a bad case of mr floppy or daddy issues.

      • Col. Tigh-Fighter says :

I never read the comics, so my memories of The Hulk are all from the TV show. And it was a bloody good tv show too!

I think this current crop of superhero films all fixate on an equally OTT super villain. But I remember The Hulk as a meloncholy road story. Like Kung Fu (with Carradine) or even The Littlest Hobo. That music as he has to leave town every episode was heart breaking.

None of these new Hulks have remotely touched that.

And am I wrong in thinking a painted green bodybuilder is still the best portrayal of him?

      • Jarv says :

        Nope. You’re bang on.

      • Continentalop says :

I have no problem with an artificially created Hulk, but so far Lou is the best live action Hulk ever. But man, if in 1933 or whatever they can make a 12-frame stop motion stop motion model with rabbit fur into an actual character called King Kong, there is no reason they shouldn’t be able to make a fucking Hulk you care about with today’s technology.

      • Continentalop says :

And yeah, the TV show was very much influenced by the old Fugitive TV show, with a guy chasing him, so I think the movies could have done the same thing more about how Banner always has to be on the move least people track him down.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

        The Hulk TV show…
I recall being hyper excited when the show was announced. I recall being a bit disappointed, but cautiously optimistic after the first show and first season, but with few exceptions, i found the show to be just a soap opera with a dude who would turn green and grow a giant nose when he got too depressed. It bored me and my friends. I only knew one dude around my age at the time who liked it, and he had uh ‘issues’

  39. Jarv says :

    Deluded fat cunt:

I root for Jon Favreau films because I did get the honor of spending a bit of time working with him on our JOHN CARTER OF MARS adaptation at Paramount. However, since that project got hobbled by an exec with apparent brain damage, Favreau and I haven’t had a whole lot of interactions. On COWBOYS & ALIENS I stayed away and just kept waiting for a trailer to excite me.

We need to find that man and thank him very much.

  40. Jarv says :

OK. I’m closing the July Rec Room. Come back in 5 minutes.
