In other news – Mrs Spud-To-Be felt most peculiar today after watching THOR, is now drooling at the prospect of more Chris Hemsworth in THE AVENGERS. That said, THOR is most excellent – a movie of arguably two halves, the first being an admirably serious look at Asgard and its place in (or should I say over) the universe, played straight with Shakespearean dramatic overtones and some gorgeous CGI work, and the second being the adventures of Thor on Earth, where Hemsworth shows some light but deft comedic chops, and where Thor is the most likeable. The denouement makes sense, is dramatically satisfying and sets us up nicely for who the villain (and the object of their avarice) will be in THE AVENGERS. It’s a magnificent piece of work – Branagh handles the performances with aplomb, getting the daft 60s style Asgradian dialogue to sound like portents of doom, and makes a spoilt brat who loves a good scrap into a compelling hero-in-waiting. The score is great – it’s nice to finally have another superhero movie with a recognisable theme tune again – and overall THOR ends up with BLAD and the first IRON MAN as my favourite of the Marvel Studios superhero movies. Hemsworth is fantastic – this cements his status as one to watch. Natalie portman, Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgard are all great (Portman particularly) and even Anthony Hopkins manages to be less annoying and more imposing than he has been in ages. THOR was well worth the wait, and Branagh has done the impossible – made the silliest superhero in Marvel’s history into one of the most watchable.
And be warned – this man will make most of you feel grossly inadequate. Excepting, perhaps, TDK and Xi.
Mrs Spud would cross my cooling corpse to get to Hemsworth, and I can’t even argue with that – Hemsworth is pure beefcake, and a lot of fun to watch. Hail the God of Thunder!!

I didn’t really have any expectations, other than to hope that it wasn’t silly – it’d be REALLY easy to get the balance wrong, and make it over-earnest which then makes it sily, or go too far with the fish-out-of-water comedy and make it silly (as with STAR TREK IV – THE VOYAGE HOME, also known as THE MOVIE SPUD THOUGHT WAS MEH BUT EVERYBODY ELSE LOVED). They got it right, and it’s largely due to Branagh, who has taken Shakespeare and made it accessible to non-Shakespeare-fan type cinemagoers. The comedy is broad and likeable, but the Asgard stuff is taken seriously enough for it to be a realistic motivation for Thor to get back there and kick some ass. SHIELD are integrated into it well, and yeah, there are issues with the movie – Loki’s motivations aren’t nearly well fleshed out enough, the return to Asgard portion of Act III feels rushed, they don’t flesh out Thor’s warrior brethren’s characters enough, etc etc – but this movie is really buoyed on Branagh’s pitch-perfect direction, not just on the actors but the overall tone of the movie, and also on the performances – Hemsworth is revelatory, he’s going to be huge (well, if that’s possible – he’s ripped like a motherfucker in this), Portman is likable and funny, especially when she’s melting ‘cos Thor looks at her with that glint in his eye, and there’s able support from Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgard (the aftermath of his night drinking with Thor is brilliant). Music is fantastic, the production design is sumptuous, they got Asgard looking great, and really, I don’t know what the haters will want to hate in this movie, bar all the usual WAAAAGHH-Thor’s-meant-to-be-Norse-not-American fanboy-pedantry bullshit. An example: Idris Elba plays Heimdall, the Gatekeeper. Idris Elba is very, very black. Hence, not Nordic looking. But Idris Elba, with golden contact lenses and gold armour, looks very very badass indeed, plus with that unpredictable charisma he has, he makes a very imposing Heimdall. Should they have cast him as traditional Nordic? Possibly. But seeing as you’re talking about a movie where Asgard is peacekeeper of the whole Marvel universe, and they use a rainbow bridge called Bifrost to enter each of the Nine Realms, that’s a feeble argument. And Heimdall ain’t Thor. Were they to cast a black Thor, it would look stupid – but Elba does just fine at making Heimdall the badass he needs to be, Nordic or not.
But I had very few expectations, which might be why THOR succeeded them all so easily. It’s just a genuinely enjoyable, funny, epic, exciting, silly, magnificent movie, and it makes the superheroes look like superheroes – no whining about with great power comes great responsibility, or an obsession with making everything REAL. This movie has Gods (capital G) smashing through legions of Frost Giants with a hammer that can crack a continent in half, and FUCK – THAT is what I want to see in a summer tentpole superhero movie!! THOR kicks ass. And that is why it rules.
Droid… If you’re not an uber-Thor fanboy, I’m very interested to hear why you disliked it…

Droid – Look forward to it. It’s weird – for the last two years or so, I’ve been going through a renaissance in how I watch movies – the hypercritical part of me seems to have morphed into a 10-year old Spud again, and I’m enjoying movies uncritically that two years ago I’d have eviscerated and pissed on in the AICN TBs. I don’t know why or how it happened, but it’s just great to have the fog of depression and cynicism lift, even for a bit, which is making life that much more enjoyable. I have no idea if it’ll last, but right now I’m just enjoying not feeling the need to shred movies to pieces if they’re just enjoyable rather than life-changingly-OMGZ-AWESOME!!!.
That said, shit like SCOTT PILGRIM and the ELM ST remake will still be gutted and left for the scavengers, as they richly deserve…
That’s good. I go through phases. And it’s all about expectations. If I think a movies going to be good (or SHOULD be good), and their not, I’m more harsh on them. If I think a movies going to be shit and it’s okay or good, then I tend to go a bit OTT in my praise. But hey, I’m the one guy that enjoyed Prince of Persia, so I can’t really tell anyone that their right or wrong about a movie. Won’t stop me though.
And I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim.

I enjoyed PRINCE OF PERSIA – Jake’s amiable enough, Gemma is teh hotness in it, yes Kingsley is phoning it in, but Molina steals the movie, and ostrich racing is ALWAYS funny. Yet it did feel like a summer movie in search of a plot, a bunch of Eastern fantasy movie cliches shaken up and thrown on the screen in no discernible order, which means that in the middle of a fun-but-forgettable movie there’s an awesome summer flick struggling to get out. I enjoyed it, though. Just can’t for the life of me remember what the hell happened 😉
As for SCOTT PILGRIM… Look, no-one is as big a fan of the Winstead as I am (Next Generation Hotness, fellas), but that movie was irredeemably shit. You’re entitled to your opinion, Droid, and I respect it, but that said, you are TEH WRONG YOU SUCKXXX

koutch – Yeah, it’s a soaring epic kind of motif – lots of strings, but recognisable – not the Elfman BATMAN or Williams SUPERMAN kind of obvious theme, but a theme like LORD OF THE RINGS, where you’ll hear it and think “Oh yeah, that’s from THOR”. Certainly better than the non-score used in stuff like THE DARK KNIGHT (a good score, but instantly forgettable) or SPIDER-MAN (the sound of meh). It realy works with the film, though.
Yeah that was Ironman biggest weakness total lack of score, just sounded like filler music. Also the cock tease of the IRONMAN song…either fucking use it or don’t. If they just fucking blasted IRONMAN over that final battle with Bridges and again with the 5 second fight with Rourke it could’ve made those thing possible decent. God the guy that did the IRONMAN score is one of the worst right now, I think he’s doing Game of Thorns as well, Ramin Djawadi is his name. The Prison Break theme is the only decent thing he’s ever done.
The guy who did the Thor score has done almost (if not all) all of Kennth’s movies so thats cool that he brought him along.
A good top 10 list is movie scores.

Yeah I think scores play such a huge role in films. Its also partially why I can’t watch old silent films half the time, because they play the shittest sounding crappy OLD TIMELY music with it. I know its cheap and all but fuck you think with some restorations of some of the greats they would put some money into some amazing score. Like I tried to watch Birth of A Nation but fuck that cheesy ass yamaha keyboard sounding crap just annoyed the fuck out of me to no end.
Also last year was an amazing year for scores, and I think for a while now directors have gotten away from that. I think a lot of that has to do with how FAST films are made these days, a good score can take much longer to make. So a lot of movies these days have just filler crap. Also the whole use of the score these days seems like a lost art, but hopefully after last year movies it’ll start going back into that direction.
Like seriously….what the fuck happened to the hit movie song? Are we just done with that? I guess Twilight had some hit songs from the movie or for the movie. But remember in the 90s every movie had some theme song or some shit. Its odd how thats just dead. When I was watching Just Wright and The Queen and Common had a song at the end of it I was like awww how quaint and nice.
AND speaking of scores…..Droid:
Exactly! That first scene of Stark flying in the Iron Man suit in IM1, where he’s whooping and hollering and thoroughly enjoying what the suit could do – that was crying out for a hero theme, something memorable that would shift a million copies of the OST – and it sounds like a cut-scene score for a mid-90s PS1 action game. Absolutely shit.
THOR isn’t afraid to be bombastic, and though it seems aware of its own ridiculousness, it embraces it instead of being ashamed of it, and it has fun with how daft the concept is. What struck me was how refreshing it is to have a movie take honour so seriously – there’s a great line after Thor’s gone drinking with Skarsgard, and although you just know there was an epic bar-room brawl happening offscreen (FUCK YOU PG-13 RATINGS!!), you get the idea Thor fought for fun, not to hurt or maim, and that he truly has no beef with anyone on Earth. He’s big on gallantry and chivalry, having fun with the guys and eyeing up the girls. It’s just a blast of fresh air not dealing with the angsty bullshit of a Nolan Batman or the over-complicated clever-clever bullshit currently on DOCTOR WHO, or the whiny angsty bullshit of SPIDER-MAN. Thor is here to kick ass and take names – he’ll punch you in the fucking jaw, then give you a hand up and buy you a beer, and if you smack him one back, he’ll laugh at you and say “Now THAT’S more like it!”. He’s a man who lives life to the full, and it’s GREAT in a world of boring angst bullshit when it comes to superheroes.
Fuck it, I wanna be Thor when I grow up!! Great fun…

Jarv – You know me. Everything seems to be enjoyable lately, so take with a few tablespoons of salt. I’m not trying to mislead anyone, but if I really love a movie these days, most people just seem to mildly enjoy it.
I think THOR is exactly what MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE should have turned out like, with a much better director and more money for the SFX budget. I mean, I like MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE just fine (I’d even put it up for a Drunken Cinema candidate, just for Langella’s batshit insane Skeletor) but give it a great director, a better central performance (because Lundgren really was the weak link) and better production values, and the result wouldn’t be a million miles from THOR.
You know whats interesting. Is that there never was director interviews for Thor (well if there are I missed them). I would really like to see Kenneth sit there dissecting comic and geek culture. Like was he at Comic Con? If so that was probably the oddest thing there.
I never bought the whole “I was 10 years old in Ireland, and I was out buying sweets after church and lo! there was a THOR comic, and so I didn’t have sweeties that day – I was HOOKED!” thing. Bullshit. Branagh never felt like a comic book geek to me. Not that there’s any harm in that – but I always thought Branagh would have been a drama geek from day 1, the kind of kid who could recite Alan Bleasdale and Shakespeare and Will Russell at will. Something about him even reading THOR before he got offered the gig sounds completely unbelievable.

Hmm, I enjoyed Fast Five and Thor.
Actually, I really liked Thor alot. Won’t have that review til next week, but visually it was the strongest of the Marvel films thus far, and probably the most entertaining. I think it’s not half as campy as it looks, but the script is good enough that it doesn’t matter.
Fast Five has one of the dumbest scripts of recent memory, but it’s pretty much good fun for what it is. I actually enjoyed it best of the series thus far.
Thor review tomorrow and I’ll do a Fast Five review too.

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed INCEPTION, though couldn’t quite understand what all the controversy was about with the last shot. It’s a bit like the ice pick under the bed in BASIC INSTINCT – you’re always gonna have the tinfoil hatted lone nut thinking it means something totally mad, but whatever you think of it, it doesn’t affect your enjoyment of the preceding movie.
INCEPTION was a lot of fun, but complicated it ain’t. What it is, is the most transparent attempt by a director to convince MGM that he is the best man for the job of directing the next James Bond movie. That’s what it felt like to me…

Watching FERRIS BUELLER. While it is undoubtedly Broderick’s finest hour, and an extremely enjoyable film, the sheen is taken off it somewhat by the thought that Ferris has undoubtedly either become one of those amoral banking fucks that caused this crash, or is a Presidential candidate who switched from being a Democrat in his callow youth to being a fully paid-up Republican in an attempt to protect his cossetted lower upper-class life.
Also, he got to fuck Mia Sara.
The older I get, the less I admire Ferris Bueller and the more I grow to despise him. Manipulative, weaselly sociopath…

So I finally got around to seeing The Fighter…
First, how the fuck was that nominated? Seriously.
Second, I really wanted Marky Mark to punch out his whole family, like give them brain damage. Ward, dude, your family is beyond fucked up. I was actually angry while watching the dysfunctional family on screen, which I guess the actors deserve props for. But fuck Ward, you should have grown a pair of balls. Gone to Vegas.
I did think Bale was good in it though. Everyone else was okay. The fight scenes were decent, with the London bout the best one.
So I just found that possibly the second biggest screen in the world is about 3 hours from me. Its a brand new Imax, it’s only 19 feet shorter then the one is Aussieland. They are showing Avatar on it this week, I wish I could see it, but I’m too busy. But I’m thinking of making a trip up there for Green Lantern, can’t think of anything else this summer that would be worth it.

Ok, so I’m hating myself for it, but I’m actually intrigued by trailer for BIG ROBOTS HITTING EACH OTHER AGAIN.
I sort of liked the first sans the overly erratic early battle scenes (the finale was excellent visually) and the completely embarassing comedy.
Anyone else notice that you can actually see the action here and the takes (even in the trailer) seem longer?

Heheh FUCK! Thats the biggest problem with the Trannyforms they all have fucking awesome trailers and you want them to be as epic as they promise then you see them and they are childish as shit. Maybe the action will be slowed down this time because of the 3D, and Bay actually paid attention with how quick cut editing would totally fuck 3D. Because it’s said that a shot needs to be at least 2 seconds for the eye to fully grasp the 3D its seeing.
But sorry they went even more mannish with the chick this time out.

Big Robots Hitting Each Other (Yet Once More) will be a fun filled ride, as long as they’re long on the Robot Hitting Action(TM) and cut out the alleged human interaction. We’ll all come out ahead in this if so.
Nope. The first one was dreadful and even people that liked the first one didn’t like the second. Still, maybe Bay has learned from this and we’ll be able to see what the hell is going on with no racist-bots this time.

I agree Jarv. I mean, I’m not a huge fan of either movie, although I did like the original when it wasnt doing stupid stuff like having Shia try and sell his grandad’s crap in school or Bumblebee pissing on Turtorro. The sequel was honestly so bad it makes Armageddon (a movie I HATE) look like Citizen Kane.
But the new trailer looks interesting because a) it’s on such a large scale–full out invasion–that I don’t see how they will have time for as many shenanigans–and the action scenes look much better, in terms of clarity and scale.
It probably won’t be good, but I think if Bay can reel in the dopey humor just a bit and if he and his team have taken more care with the action sequences, I see no reason why he can’t rebound from the last one.
Of course, I know history is against me on this one.
Watched Red last night, which I enjoyed. Yeah, not as good/fun as The Losers, The Expendables, or probably The A-team, but not bad.

Watched Mesrine, part 1 over the weekend. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I’ll have to watch the second part sometime this week. Vincent Cassel is the man, simply put. Mesrine was a fucking crazy dude.
I also watched the double feature of The Incredible Shrinking Man (witness him escaping the hungry clutches of a cat! Witness him impaling a spider with a nail! Witness him being washed away from a hot water heater bursting!) and Monolith Monsters, which was probably one of the dumbest sci-fi “monster” concepts in the 50’s. It’s just rocks. That multiply from water.

Jeez maybe even one more I can’t remember now-all that money raised/completed in One Day.
$30,000 dollars in one day.
I stayed up coaching/helping the one gal-and she made her goal with one minute to go-she would have lost 350 bucks except for a guy at the last minute.
So this crowdfunding is insane-but man it was tiring/drunken nuttiness-I was tweeting for something like 12 hours off and on-Epic.
Glad the gal made it, she worked her ass off.

WARLOCK on DVD!!! Fucking fantastic. Love that movie – and Richard E Grant makes a surprisingly decent badass, with Julian Sands his usual serpentine self. He’d have been a perfect Lucius Malfoy back in the day – too old these days, sadly.

Actually seen two whole films recently. All the way through!
Scream 4 – Not as bad as Scream 3, maybe on par with Scream 2, nowhere near as good as a grilled chicken and coleslaw wrap.
Super – Liked it very much. It’s a bit of a one joke film, though, so don’t bother if you think you won’t be amused by a mentally unstable man being inappropriately violent.
