The Birthday Series: The Philadelphia Experiment (1984)

Droids-Birthday-Series-1984There’s nothing worse than trying to write a review about a dull, average, boring film. A bad film gives you plenty of topics to talk about, and a review can often be therapeutic as it allows you to clarify in your own mind why you didn’t like it. Good films are easy as well, but tend to be less complex than bad reviews. The reasons for its success are usually simpler. The film is fun, entertaining, emotionally satisfying, challenging or whatever other base reason gives you the jumping off point to create a review that encapsulates your positive attitude towards the film.

The Birthday Series – Captain America (2011)

Droids-Birthday-Series-2011Who would’ve thunk it? My crazy idea for “a movie a day” in the lead up to my birthday, celebrating each year of my life, would catch on? Well, to my gleeful pleasure, both Jarv and Just Pillow Talk have embarked on their own celebrations. And in one Total Bastards case, it’s a doozy of a mission. Alas, I got about halfway through my list before I had a meltdown and went AWOL, and ever since I’ve been picking at the scab of my life, one mediocre movie at a time. And since I’ve taken so damn long to finish off this series, wouldn’t you know it, another year has passed and I’ve got 2011 to add to the mix. And lucky me, it seemed like a good’un. ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, Marvels latest two hour trailer for next years ‘The Avengers’, was released just shy of my birthday and actually looked like a lot of fun! So… did it deliver the goods? Read on, my friends. Read on.

The Birthday Series–Flight of the Navigator (1986)

Droids-Birthday-Series-1986Ah, childhood memories. For most of us we remember our childhood through rose coloured glasses. At least I do. Nearly all my memories of childhood are positive. This includes movies I watched back when I wasn’t so cynical and demanding. Some movies stand the test of time, like Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars, which are as entertaining today as they were when I first saw them. But others are strictly for that time when your expectations were simple, and all it took were broad themes and straightforward storytelling to make you happy. The latter is the case with ‘Flight of the Navigator’, a film I loved as a kid, but haven’t seen for over twenty years. Writing that sentence makes me sad.

The Birthday Series–The Lost Boys (1987)

Droids Birthday Series 1987It’s been a while between drinks, not only for the Birthday Series, but for reviews in general. But I’ve got a couple in the bag now, ready to go, and the first back from my work imposed hiatus is a teen vampire love story. No, nobody gets all sparkly in this one. I give you the ‘The Lost Boys’.

The Birthday Series – The Blob (1988)

The Blob TITLE Well, here we are again. I was a wee child of 10 when this movie came out, and I can safely say it was not on my radar. In fact, I’ve never see this one before now. Basically because it seemed a bit shit. But rules are rules, and this series has demanded that I watch it. So here goes nothing…
