    Yeah New Years.

Droid do you know if there is also a Sydney in NZ?

  5. Toadkillerdog says :

Did someone order snow? Because i know where you can get a foot of it, cheap!
Holy frijoles do we have snow!

    • Toadkillerdog says :

      Happy New Year everyone.
I am digging out – but I have a kickass snowblower so its not all bad!

    • kloipy says :

We are getting hit tonight, not much, but as always it is a pain in the ass. I need to stop and grab some beer on the way home. Rang in the new year with some Mad Elf and Bell’s Two Hearted. Perfect way to slip into a 2014 coma

      • Toadkillerdog says :

I love the Bells Two Hearted!
You have great taste Mr. K!

      • kloipy says :

        I’m also less filling 🙂

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Pillow – you are a New Englander, correct? Get ready my friend.
Hey Kloipy stay thirsty my friend

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Si….in CT, getting hit with snow now. I had a delicious hefewiezen from Germany and a double bock.

I enjoyed Duvel and Leffe Brune on New Years. Since it seems I ain’t making it to work tomorrow, I think I will partake in another beverage.

      • kloipy says :

Duvel is great stuff. We did not get enough snow here that I’m allowed to justify taking off, which at this point and time when I’m up to start shoveling the drive, the only thing I want to do is go back to bed.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

It’s still snowing here. I will have to shovel soon…in fucking 3 degree weather!

      • kloipy says :

I went out this morning and it was 10 degrees with a -8 windchill factor. It is damn cold. Hope you guys make it safe!

      • tombando says :

We got about half a foot of powdery snow, it’s about 0 degrees and its windy. Basically you can freeze your nads off getting in and outta your car.

And tonite it’s sposed to be minus 20 woo hoo!

      • kloipy says :

Ugh, it is just terrible all around. But a good excuse to stay in doors and get drunk

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Don’t need no stinkin excuse to get drunk!

      • kloipy says :

        That’s the truth!

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

I was drinking some Pinot while eating some pepperoni pizza since I worked from home today. Not too shabby.

      • kloipy says :

Yeah man, that sound like a damn good afternoon to me. Now i could just get away with drinking while AT work.

  6. Judge Droid says :

    Watched recently…

The Hobbit – Part Deux… Meh. To say it’s a better watch than the first one is the faintest of praise. It does feel a little unbalanced since so much happens in the first hour then the last hour and a half is all laketown boredom and Smaug. It’s quite good during the initial Bilbo v Smaug bit, but a lot less good once it turns into the Gummi Dwarves. A way to rebalance this would have been to not needlessly include Legolas and the chick. The barrel scene just made me think of the superior, brilliant sequence through the town in Tintin. So, not as bad as the first part, but again… Why is this 3 x 3 hour movies?

Riddick – Unfortunately, this kinda sucked.

American Hustle – I had the same problem with this as I had with American Gangster. Performances and production were fine, but it’s just not that interesting a story. And David O. Russell has to stop casting Jennifer Lawrence in roles that she’s too young for.

    • Just Pillow Talk says :

Riddick – what did they fuck up?

American Hustle – is it a long movie, does it feel it because of the lack of story? See, I like American Gangster, especially after watching it a second time.

      Hobbit 2 – don’t give a shit.

      • Judge Droid says :

The biggest fault of Riddick was that it was kinda boring. I did see the extended cut so maybe the theatrical cut plays quicker. That, along with it kind of apes Pitch Black. And there’s some horrible CG. I’m not a big fan of the series. I liked Pitch Black well enough, but Chronicles blows, and this one is straddling the two.

Hustle is a good chunk over two hours. I don’t dislike Gangster, I prefer it to Hustle. I’ve only seen it once, and it was when it first came out. It’s been a while, so I half think I like it because of Rusty and Denzel. I’d need to watch it again. But I don’t think either film really has interesting enough characters or story. They’re just fairly well acted and that gets them through.

You don’t give a shit about Hobbit 2 because you’re going to wait until the extended editions are out so you can watch 10 hours of Hobbit-y goodness. I know it.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

See, I liked Chronicles and all it’s ridiculousness. And I like Pitch Black, but if it’s boring, that’s another story.

I will definitely check out American Hustle, nevertheless.

I’ve never seen the LOTR extended trilogy, so I very much doubt I will check out the extended versions of the Hobbits. I will probably see Hobbit 2, though at least at home I can fast forward past bits.

    • tombando says :

I thought that WAS the extended edition?!

    • Xiphos0311 says :

The two issues I had with American Hustle was one it so desperately wanted to be the 2000 version of Goodfellas and it wasn’t near good enough for that and DeNiro’s cameo reinforced that idea especially when he played a flashback like Jimmy Conway.
Secondly AH was so self satisfied with itself that it was off putting and annoying. It was a good movie just not as great as it thinks it is.

Actually in the context of the movies take on ABSCAM Lawrence character was the right age.

Riddick was a weird movie like Droid said it was boring but I found boring when the Mercs showed up. The first oh I don’t know maybe a 1/4 of the movie with Riddick on his own with very little dialogue I found to be interesting, the other parts not so much.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Ugh….only 25% good? Damn, I will still see it but after all this time that is what they produced?

      • Xiphos0311 says :

The main problem for me is after the mercs show it turns into a second rate copy of Pitch Black. It’s almost a direct copy more or less.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

So then they have no idea what to do with the character or Chronicle s scared them off into going down a different path (not saying it had to follow chronicles, just different than pitch black).

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Yeah the ambitious popular perception of Chronicles failures(not held by me I like it) scared them into a near shot for shot remake of PB.

      • Judge Droid says :

The other problem with Riddick is that it looks like shit. It looks like a film shot on a soundstage. Which it was. PB was shot in Australia (I think), and it looks much more convincing.

The first part is decent. But yes, as soon as the mercs show up it just turns into a crap version of PB.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

That’s a good point about looking like a sound stage. I agree with that it looks awful and somehow the CGI looks worse then it did in PB

    • Xiphos0311 says :

I’m looking forward to this but then again I’m a big fan of the show.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

        Xi, baby wassup?
I have never watched vmars dont even know what it is about.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

ST Louis has good ribs also.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Heh…shit that was a major choke job by KC.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Toad, I was just drinking some wychwood blond ale, which was pretty delicious. I prefer their hobgoblin, but the blond was good too. Also had some Affligem.

      • tombando says :

Might go see Marky Mark’s afghan hound movie. Battleshit guy did it. Kc gagged i fell asleep at 38-10 wow what a comeback. Score outta arena league. Bungles played down to form as well. Denver should win at home. Watching Xerxes and Pack go at it. Hey Toad did Ruf pick Cinci.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Don’t so it to yourself tom Friends don’t ler friends watch suck ass SEAL movies.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

        Hey Tom,
Ruf actually favored the chargers he hates anything to do with cats!
He also loves the baby blue uniforms

      • kloipy says :

Hey TKD! Had to let you know that Troegs just released their Nugget Nectar yesterday! I got one of the first 6 packs, just bottled 3 days ago. It was, as always, incredible

  7. Just Pillow Talk says :

Holy fuck is it ball busting freezing outside with the wind.

  8. Judge Droid says :

Watched Rush last night. Pretty good movie about a sport I know very little about.

  9. Just Pillow Talk says :

I watched The 13th Warrior again the other night….never gets old. I also watched Alien 3 (close to being very good) and I tried, for some unknown reason, to watch Die Hard 5 again. Shit, forgot how awful it is. Once they jumped off the building with nothing more than scratches basically, I had to bail.

    • Toadkillerdog says :

Pillow, I see your Diehard 5, and raise you Hansel and Gretel witch hunters. Utter shit on a stick.

      • Jarv says :

Nah. H&G was ok. Should have been better though.

Anyway, I take your bid and raise WWZ.

      • Judge Droid says :

        WWZ > H&G >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DH5

      • Toadkillerdog says :

WWZ is Avatar compared to H&G

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Sorry, Hansel and Gretel better. In the case of Die Hard, you, um, have the previous ones to compare to. Hell, numerous cinco made the forth seem that much better. Seriously. The villain in the fifth was actually shittier and all the son bullshit was worst than the daughter bullshit.

    • tombando says :

Oh DH5 was terrible, terrible, terrible. Even Death proof was better, and Gah! That was dregs.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Hey Tom, are you pulling for the Colts over the pats?

      • tombando says :

Ahhh no, just as soon see Manning get another shot vs The Brady Bunch….pending beating SD, not a given. Suck for Luck just channeled Rex Grossman too much. Seattle shoulda won by more, ummm Carolina by a coinflip at home?

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Fuck the Pats. Manning better win.

Whichever NFC team wins should win the Superbowl anyway.

      • Judge Droid says :

Fuck Manning. Go Brady and his team of nobodies.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Manning doesn’t exactly have big time receivers either. You really don’t need them anymore in the NFL since they do not allow you to play defense, calling cheap fouls on the secondary and so much is called a personal foul in terms of quality hits leading with your shoulder.

The only “name” receiver Manning has is Seller, who they picked up for this year. He’s a nice little receiver, but not a game-breaker. The 49er’s have the best group of receivers out of the teams remaining.

  10. tombando says :

Come again? Decker, D. Thomas and Welker? these guys are awfully good. I don’t see there being any problems w/ Manning’s wideouts. I Do worry as a Broncs fan about CB Chris Harris being out, Quentin Jammer is a Toaster basically in his place.

    • kloipy says :

My wife is a Pats fan, but I already let her know that I would be unable to root for them against Denver. I’d love to see a Seahawks vs Broncos game, the 2 teams that deserve to be there this time. I think that would be an exciting game. I really don’t want to see the 49’ers there again, or the Pats for that matter.

    • Just Pillow Talk says :

They are nice receivers, but not even close to being great.

  11. tombando says :

I think it’ll be the Niners and Broncs, but am not betting on it. Not a prob. in the world w/ this becoming an old AFC West show-down, Seahawks and Denver.

    • Judge Droid says :

I’d like a Seahawks v Pats Super Bowl. I like Russell Wilson. Don’t like Kaepernick and not a Manning fan. Brady’s taken a team if rookie nobodies to within a game of the Super Bowl. Comparing their week one game against buffalo with this weekends game was like watching a completely different team.

  12. Judge Droid says :

    Watched two pilot eps today…

True Detective… Starring Woody and McC. Very good. Should be a good series.

Intelligence… Starring the bloke from Lost. Complete shit, but admittedly so awful it’s half entertaining. Like the Sleepy Hollow pilot.

    • just pillow talk says :

I saw the previews for Intelligence…. looked pretty meh.

Watched Red Eye last night. It’s okay up to a point… and that point is once she gets off the plane, forget about it. She would have been dropped faster than anything sprinting through an airport, especially 3 years after 9/11. Putting that aside, and her stealing the truck with no security whatsoever outside, the cops would never take that long to get there.

Side note: when she stabs him with a pen, 2for2true must have stood up and clapped.

      • tombando says :

*Red Eye vs. Flightplan=everyone loses in that battle. I kinda liked Red Eye but you’re right there are holes you could fit Two Harolds into there.

*Intelligence looks like CSI: Fugitive! I am skipping that pronto.

        *True Detective is promising.

    • tombando says :

Droid am enjoying watching the Death Valley Meet AKA Australian Open going on right now. What was that, 9 withdrawals in the first round alone? playing in 108 degree heat? I can just see Nadal now….

      • Toadkillerdog says :

        Kloipy, Pillow.
One word for ya – Victory Hop ranch! Ok that’s three words, but one word to sum it up, it’s fookin dilishus! Dang, three words again, can’t seem to get the hang of that one word thingy.

SB48 Preference: 9ners vs Broncs. Don’t care who wins.
‘hawks vs Broncs. Don’t care who wins
        9ners vs Pats – 9ners
        hawks vs Pats – ‘hawks.
Yeah i hate the Pats .
Gmen own the Pats in the superbowl! Yes, i know Eli screwed a skunk this season, but I will have that memory purged Total Recall style!

      • kloipy says :

Hey TKD! I’ve heard good things about that one! I need to pick it up. I like some of Victory’s stuff, not all of it, but they do make some solid beers. I’m thinking of picking up some Bells Expidition Stout and aging a few bottles.

      • Judge Droid says :

Yep, Bando. It’s a scorcher this week. Tomorrow’s forecast for 44. No relief until the weekend apparently. That’s when I’m going to the tennis, so it’s a welcome cool change.

      • Jarv says :

Cricket still fucking going. Still losing. At least this one looks competitive so far.

In cheery news- am preferred candidate for an interview I have on Wednesday.

      • Judge Droid says :

Aussies won despite being 9/244 chasing 300. Oh dear England. Oh dear.

      • Judge Droid says :

That’s good news about your potential job though. I also have good news, as today I have officially got my place in the course I wanted. Yep I’m being a worthless student bum again. Instead of just being a worthless bum. The course is 3D animation for film and tv. Starts in February. Should be good.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Is it at a place that seems okay? Good news then.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

That does sound pretty cool. So Werewolves on the Moon will eventually happen.

      • Judge Droid says :

Hopefully. And Mega Drop Bear. I’m keen on seeing Our Nic chomped by a ginormous koala. I think this is important. Our Nic needs to be chomped. Immediately.

  13. Just Pillow Talk says :

Hmm…I’ve never had Victory (heh – I am a Jets fan after all). I will have to search them out.

  14. Just Pillow Talk says :

Watched The Way Back last night….that is a solid movie. Alas I made the mistake of watching King Arthur after….what horrible writing.

  15. Xiphos0311 says :

Here’s a picture for TKD but everyone else can look also.

    • Toadkillerdog says :

Thanks Xi, that’s a beautiful Gun.
An M777 155mm (towed – get it?) – they came in a few years after I had left the service.
Laying down some some heavy arty

  16. Toadkillerdog says :

I watched Solaris -finally, The Russian version.
3 hours long. Took me two days and 30 some odd years.
What blew me away was the startling beauty of some of the scenes. Fantastic cinematography. It is a great Science Fiction story. Great piece of writing by Lem, and a damn goodt screenplay adaptation. But it does meander a bit. And the scene where they are driving on the highway – which i found out was actually shot in Tokyo, is (probably) the longest scene of highway driving – and no cars chases, that has ever been put to film. Spectacularly Boring and I could find no point to it. At first i thought it was an allegory for space travel, but it aint. But the film is worth looking at because of the great story. This is science fiction, not science fantasy. It is brooding and speculative, a bit uneven in places, but it is a must for the true fan of science fiction.

  17. Xiphos0311 says :

Seems like I have the place to myself today so what shall I talk to myself about?

New season of Sherlock was rather uninteresting. I think I am beginning to understand the complaints about the Moffat dude who runs. On the minus side the way chose to go with Mrs.Frodo was an odd choice and was designed for purely ‘shock” value as was the way Smaug wrapped up the blackmailer case. Also there was only a small cameo by the insanely hot broad that plays Irene Adler.

on the plus side the Arab Irish dame was a good replacement for the Adler skirt since she is easy on the eyes. Frodo was still excellent as Watson and they manged to keep him like the book, Holmes partner, not his lackey lick spittle as he is portrayed as in most film and TV productions.. This is probably the best celluloid portrayal of Watson outside of Young Sherlock Holmes and the Iron man version. Mycroft was excellent as well and I enjoyed all the nods to the written works sprinkled throughout the series. Overall this season was OK but not nearly as good as the 2 previous ones.

The Broncos are up on the Pats 10-3. I am sort of leaning towards the Pats so I can feast on all the delicious whining and belly aching over the Hoody and Tom Terrific. In the end though I don’t really care though I don’t have a dog in this hunt.

Last movie I saw in the theaters was American Hustle a movie that so desperately wanted to be Goodfellas but wasn’t. It was also very much infatuated with its own self importance and smugness. A good movie but not great so it will probably clean up at the Oscars since the academy voter are by and large reatrded.

    • Toadkillerdog says :

I can not stand Pats, very happy for Peyton and Broncs.
No real rooting interest in second game but since i like kapernick just s smidge more than wilson, ill go 9ners, although i must say i can not stand harbaugh and the media would go berserk if a harbaugh wins back to back superbowls, not as obnoxious as last year, but still plenty bad

      • Toadkillerdog says :

One thing though, te narrative will be “if manning wins superbowl he will be best qb of all time”
        to which i say, bullshit.
I love Peytons game, and he may well be the greatest regulat season qb of all time – up for debate though
But the greatest QB of all time, the one man if my life depended on completing a drive, that i would choose, that would only be Joe Montana and no one else.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Hard to argue over Joe, especially since Brady has lost to inferior teams in the Superbowl. I for one am glad the Pats lost.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Ahem, Mr. Pillow. I must take exception to your characterization of the teams that defeated the Patriots in the Super Bowl as being “inferior”.
Said team(s) both being the New York GIANTS which coincidentally happens to be the favorite team of the Toadkiller household.
Now the Pats certainly had the better record, but it is not how you start, but how you finish, and the Gmen where undoubtedly the best finishing team both years.
Eli screwed the pooch this year, but he still beat the Pats with two amazing throws and two amazing catches, so while Eli definitely needs to get his shit together ext season, he will always have those victories of the heavily favored pats

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Wilson has regressed big time this year, he makes one or two good throws per game, but stinks it out the rest of the time. That Defense is tremendous.
I think Peyton will really need to be sharp, he threw some ducks in today’s game, even though he was accurate, which sounds oxymoronic, but the pats secondary is terrible, and the hawks will make him pay. Still, I like Denver to win the whole thing because Wilson is not playing well

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Heh…still inferior teams, much like the team that beat the Bills. It’s a specialty of Giant teams: rising above the superior competition in the big game. Only in their first Superbowl were they the better team.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Mr Pillow, I have just one word for you: Harumph!

      • Jarv says :

Interview in just over an hour. BRicking it and don’t know what to do with myself.

      • Judge Droid says :

Officially enrolled for my course. Feb 5th and I’m a full time student bum. Hope the interview went well.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Is this a different sort of bum then what you were before?

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Different adjective in front of bum instead of:

        God damn
        Dirty bastard
        Stinking drunk

        Congrats btw ….lazy bum.

    • tombando says :

Was very happy w/ Denver winning. And vs. the Seahawks AKA Ravens from a few years back? Should be a tough but good match of opposites. Xerxes channelling Rex Grossman did them in. I don’t think NE wants Welker back now….

  18. Just Pillow Talk says :

It is one fucking degree outside. I still haven’t warmwd up from shoveling.

  19. tombando says :

    Good luck there Jarv

  20. ThereWolf says :

Hope the interview went well, Jarv.

I join the ranks of the unemployed on Feb 13. Happy days…

    • Just Pillow Talk says :

Geez…..you hate that place you’re at now, right? I’m sure it’ll work out.

Maybe you could be a student bum like droid?

  21. Just Pillow Talk says :

Watched Elysium the other night. I liked it just fine, but in terms of sci-fi, much prefer Oblivion from what I’ve seen recently.

WTF was up with Jodie Foster? Whatever accent she was trying to do was distracting as all hell.

    • Judge Droid says :

I thought Fosters accent was one of the few original ideas in a disappointingly generic movie. Seeing as Elysium is populated from every conceivable nationality, it makes sense that the inhabitants would have an international accent. However, the main issue was that I think only Foster was actually doing the accent.

I preferred Oblivion too, simply because it was more enjoyable.

    • tombando says :

Yeah it wasn’t the best movie, pretty okay ride but we’ve all seen it before. Oblivion actually had more stuff to it.

    • ThereWolf says :

I also preferred Oblivion, though I enjoyed Elysium.

In the making-of, on set, Foster is clearly heard going for a South African accent (unless my ears deceiveth me) – maybe for consistency with Copley’s character? The ADR’s something else… but you catch her lip shape deviating from the delivery now and again.

  22. Judge Droid says :

Here’s one for Jarv, wherever he may be.

  23. Judge Droid says :

Another one for Jarv. Or maybe Pillows.

  24. Judge Droid says :

Watched Capitan Phillips. Good performances, solid movie. Only real objection was the tendency to highlight the Somalians use of khat (which is less addictive than tobacco) as some sort of leading element in their situation. Simplistic horseshit. Otherwise a good flick that bothers to look (briefly) at both sides. Although I’ve been told that the depiction of Capitan Philips himself is a little rose coloured glasses.

    • tombando says :

Yeah in general I agree w/ you there Droid. It was pretty good.

    • Xiphos0311 says :

yeah khat isn’t that addictive except for the last decade or so where Khat in Somalia has been mixed with meth to increase its natural amphetamine like high.

They white washed the hell out of Capt Phillips, that dumb fuck, got his ship captured.there was no need for them to sail as close in as they did as he was repeatedly told by his crew.

    • tombando says :

yeah they used coke on those child soldiers in Sierra Leone, for example. Cut their foreheads and rubbed it right in. There ya go.

  25. Just Pillow Talk says :

I watched Bowfinger last night, which I have always liked. Steve Martin is actually good in it, and for that matter, Eddie. By no means a hysterical movie, but I found myself smiling quite a bit from it.

  26. Just Pillow Talk says :

Snitch surprised me by how much I liked it. At this point, I do not judge the rock’s acting because he just acts now. A really solid performance by him. And for the life of me I couldn’t figure out who the cartel guy was. Ididn’t even rrecognize Bratt.

  27. Judge Droid says :

I watched Wolf of Wall Street last night. While there are individual scenes and performances I liked, the film overall is pretty despicable. It’s a fundamental mistake of everyone involved to glorify this complete fucking scumbag. Never once in the ENTIRE THREE HOUR film does Scorsese show the devastating results of this shitheels conjobs. But we get scene after scene of him fucked up on drugs and doing hee-laiiiiir-ious shit. There’s one scene of comedy gold, I grant the film that. And DiCap nails it (trying to open his car door with his foot, for those who have seen it). But by that stage of the long fucking movie, it should be sinking the boots in, not STILL making light of how pathetic this cunt is. There’s a lot to like about it, but it’s all cancelled out because Scorsese doesn’t seem to hate the fuckhead. In fact, Scorsese seems to find him great value (even giving the real cunt a cute little cameo at the end). It’s the type of film where the more I think about it, the more disgusting it is to me. The guys crimes weren’t victimless. He preyed on the ignorant and gullible, and defrauded everyday people of millions. But the film doesn’t have the stones to show ANY of these victims. All it’s interested in showing is the criminals doing drugs and fucking hookers. The film is as pathetic as the man himself.

    • Judge Droid says :

Boy, that turned into a rant.

      • tombando says :

Yeah Jim Caple–espn baseball blogger-said as much @ it, Droid. You get whatever you are gonna for ‘insight’ into the guy first half hour, then it’s more in your face w/ the sleaze for another 2.5 hours….ummmmm no thanks. The Goodfellas treatment isn’t warrented for Everything Marty does, you know?

Needs Giant Robots AND a lion or two (in hats) you think?

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

Heh…you are not the only one who has felt that way about the film. At some point I will see it.

  28. tombando says :

    Recent viewing:

*Serpico-Pacino from ’73, Lumet etc. Still works quite well. Why can’t we have THAT Pacino anymore?! awfully good.

*the Seven-Ups also from ’73, also shot in NYC. You know, Roy Schieder etc. Fine long car chase, Tony Lo Bianco as the baddie. Slowish in places but not bad.

*Jaws. ’75. Still really great. Gotta love that whole Indianapolis monologue by Shaw. Holy. Why can’t we have THAT Spielberg anymore?

  29. Judge Droid says :

Watched Escape Plan. Kinda shit. Think Arnie and Sly should possibly consider retirement. They really aren’t making good movies anymore.

  30. Toadkillerdog says :

I watched The Time Machine last night and i gotta fess up bout sompin.
I said earlier in this thread that Jaws was the first and last movie to scare me.
Well, technically it is correct. Jaws was the first and last movie i saw in a movie theater that scared me.
However, digging thru the toadkiller memory banks revealed that there were two others before Jaws that i sawr on tv that scared the crap out of a young toadkiller.
The first was Gargoyles – i though fer sure that a monster was coming out from under my bed.
The second, was The Time Machine. The Rod Taylor original of course. What was so scary about a dude going back and forth thru time?
But the damn Morlocks scared me so much as a child even long after they lost the ability to scare me, i avoided that flick.
Nowadays i love watching it whenever it is on, and in glorious HD the Blue Morlocks look even better. If my 5 or 6 year old self had seen them in HD i probably would have snuffed it right on the spot!

    • Echo the Bunnyman says :

Toad, it’s funny that you cite the Morlocks and the Gargoyles as attributing to early nightmares. They were two of the same for me, along with some of the spookier Harryhausen critters–I was young enough in the 80’s that the Medusa from the original Clash was nightmare fodder for me when it was released.

The Morlocks and the Gargoyles even have a good bit in common, they sort of look the same and have great underground civilizations. I think Gargoyles, and Stan Winston’s wonderful costume design, is pretty underrated. I also always thought Bernie Casey’s gargoyle reminded me of that Ebonite Interrogator from the Outer Limits. It probably helped that the gargoyle’s speaking voice was Vic Perrin who narrated the Limits opening back in the day.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Hey Jonah, great news about the baby girl! I had no idea that Vic Perrin was the voice! Wow, thanks for the intel.
Damn shame about PSH -an immense talent.

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

It is a shame about PSH. Not the person I expected to hear about found dead with a needle in his arm.

Although he was arguably less well known, I also saw that Maximilian Schell passed away. RIP Dr. Reinhardt.

Thinking about things that creeped me out as a kid; Toad, do you remember Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, the original TV movie?

Those little creatures spooked the crap out of me when I caught the movie on Saturday afternoon television.

      • Toadkillerdog says :

Of course i remember that, and ill up you Trilogy of terror!

    • Xiphos0311 says :

The first movie that ‘scared” me I think was Wizard of Oz, it was the evil flying monkeys that got me when i saw it on TV when I was about 5. Then in 79 I got hit with the double whammy of Aliens in the movies which left me unsettled, the face huggers where the reasons and Salem’s Lot on TV . The scene with the kid vampire scratching at the second floor window trying to get the other kid to let him in still gives me a bit of the heebie jeebies.
Jaws never bothered me as a kid all I ever wanted to be was Quint I thought he rocked. Dryfus always seemed like a pussy girly man who would want to bang his operating system. Brody was alright he just did his duty like a man.

Jonah congrats on getting the match set of kids.

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

        Thanks Xi!

        Salem’s Lot–yes!!

That scene with the kid vampire at the window has stuck with me for years. I’m hesitant to rewatch it, because I doubt it would hold up, but man, tv movies were some creepy, freaky stuff back in the day.

Does anyone remember Bermuda Depths with Burl Ives and Carl Weathers hunting a giant demonic sea turtle powered by some hot-to-trot sea-witch called a jenny hanniver?

I think Jaws more inspired me to fear later than that the film itself was scary in the moment. Watching it, it’s like you say, once Quint shows up, you’re rooting for him to hunt the shark. The fact there’s some really harrowing beach attack stuff before Quint, coupled with the fact he gets eaten pretty brutally by the shark ensured that, psychologically, my child-self was more freaked out after the movie, or at the beach later, than during the film itself.

What really spooked me, full-stop, was The Changeling with George C Scott. I can’t even recall why exactly. I was very young, but even then never found ghosts particularly scary, but something about that movie, the images of the kid in the bathtub and the moving wheelchair were straight-up creepy.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Yeah TV movies back in the day weren’t the Hallmark network level of crap like they are today.

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

Also, right-on about Wizard of Oz. The flying monkeys scared me pretty early, because I saw that movie before most of the others. Again, design wise, it’s funny because I can track a similarity between the flying monkeys and the morlocks and the gargoyles, which are like crossbreeds of the two.

      • Continentalop says :

THE CHANGELING was a fucking scary movie. Creeped the shit out of me.

  31. Judge Droid says :

    Recently watched…

Thor 2 – Okay. Probably prefer the first one, but it’s a solid, middle of the road flick, which makes it one of the better Marvel flicks.

Moneyball – Felt like watching this one again. Good flick.

Her – Spike Jonze is 4 for 4.

  32. Continentalop says :

Greetings Moondoggies. Been busy since New Year (and sick). So what have I missed around here?

    • Judge Droid says :

Hey mate, things are pretty quiet around here. I start a course on Wednesday, Jarv’s on the unemployment line and Wolfie is soon to be. So it’s understandably quiet times around here.

    • Toadkillerdog says :

Hola Conti! Good to see you back .
As far as what is new around here.
I heard through the grapevine that there have been at least two sex-reassignment operations around here, and one scientology intervention as well as the usual drug and alcohol rehabs and relapses (Me and Ruf).
      Other than that, pretty quiet

  33. Continentalop says :

Also, to steal a page from the Abominable Snowcone, Philip Seymour Hoffman is fucking dead.

  34. Continentalop says :

Totally disagree with you about TWOWS, Droid. But agree with you about HER.

  35. Judge Droid says :

    Denver are getting destroyed.

  36. Echo the Bunnyman says :

    Hey all,

Hows it going? Been MIA for a bit. The second little Echo is almost here–going to be a girl, and is slated to show up mid next month but could show up sooner.

Didn’t bother with the Superbowl and caught the trailers afterward. The usual meh for the most part. Transformers 4 looks about the same as the rest. They mentioned Dinobots online but all I saw was Optimus riding something that looked like a dragon. Not interested. After the first movie, they got loud, incoherent and obnoxious and don’t show signs of stopping with this one.

Winter Soldier looks pretty good, Noah looks interesting–or at least, it has the potential to be interesting. For my money, the crazier it is the better. I don’t need the bland Sunday school lesson. Spiderman looks extremely ‘meh’ and Electro looks like a crap villain.

Need for Speed looks like a poor man’s Fast and the Furious. The Costner ‘Day’ movies (Draft and Three to Kill) also look like ‘meh’.

Saw The Lego Movie the other day. Was surprised to see they made an actual movie out of it instead of just a toy commercial. It’s still a toy commercial, but it also bothers to tell a story and is entertaining and good-natured at the same time. You can’t really say that for all the Smurf, Chipmunks, G.I. Joe movies. It was my son’s second trip to the movies, and he did surprisingly well. His only moment of disruption was pointing at the screen and saying ‘Bat-nam’ when the Dark Knight showed up.

In regards to movies mentioned above:

I thought Her was probably the best movie I saw last year.

I’m not convinced that Scorsese sees the Wolf douchebag as “great value” or that his depiction constitutes an approval at all. In fact, I think ultimately his feelings are the opposite. That being said, I’m not really a fan of the film despite some of the great work that went into it. It’s a particularly unpleasant film to watch, and ultimately feels much more pointless than Scorsese’s usual outings. It’s not that I don’t get what he was trying to do, but I don’t think his approach and the material add up to a successful or entirely interesting movie, partially because the characters themselves have no interest outside of being self-involved a-holes.

    • tombando says :

And what did you think of Marky Mark doing the War thing in Afghanistan?

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

Lone Survivor? I thought it was well made and involving in the moment as a movie–Peter Berg is usually good at that kind of thing–but it was still rather one-note and in many ways was just “Act of Valor” with better acting.

      • tombando says :

Sounds about right. I actually am looking forwards to his portrayal of the guy who Optimus walks over in Big Robots Fore.

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

As our leading giant robot expert, what did you think of that Transformers trailer, Tom?

      • tombando says :

I liked it. Marky Mark AND a green guy in a parachute. Works for me. Will be more of the same Mikey Bay junk, you know that. I hope for less Stoopid Human Tricks this time out. But we’ll see. It’s _Bay’s last one.

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

The funny part is they wouldn’t have to do much to get me onboard with these. Cut back the stupid jokes and crappy camera work–the third film was actually decently coherent–and streamline the scripts so they showcase the robots a bit more instead of the people. Voila! A fun popcorn movie.

      • tombando says :

Make it more like the first one and you have something, sure. Marky Mark in Hong Kong fighting Big robot Dinosaurs. I like it.

    • Continentalop says :

Hey Echo, have you seen ROBOT & FRANK? Not a masterpiece, but a good companion film with HER.

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

I really liked Robot and Frank, and agree with what you’re saying. The thing I really appreciated about both of those movies–and another recently called The Machine–is that they deal with these issues without being the blatant luddite finger-wagging and doom and gloom of usual futuristic robot/AI oriented fiction.

They are human stories first and foremost and tech sci-fi second, I’d say.

I will add that they are both still cautionary in some ways, and aren’t “all-in” when it comes to progressive technology, but they deal with that theme in interesting and realistic ways, instead of just assuming that a) they revolt and make us slaves or b) we oppress them and exploit them and make them slaves.

      • Continentalop says :

I haven’t seen THE MACHINE but HER and R&F are very much human stories, as you said.

I thought R&F did a great job connecting the idea of erasing the robot’s memory with Frank’s battle with Alzheimer’s. A subtle treatise on the idea of memory as identity.

    • Judge Droid says :

Well, I disagree on Wolf. To me, Scorsese’s “point” was that if society (society portrayed here as the pathetic scum who were getting rich too) supported and applauded Belfort, and the legal and justice departments let him off the hook, then why should his movie be the judge and jury. The richer you are the more you can get away with. So the resulting film is an increasingly gruelling display of excess. You could say that Scorsese’s point is that he has no point.

And when I read that Scorsese plans on releasing a 4 hour version of the film, and it’s just extended scenes and more sex, then yes, it does reaffirm my opinion that he finds this prick great value.

      • Echo the Bunnyman says :

Except for your second paragraph, I think you’ve nailed the point he was going for. That point would still, in a sense, be an indictment and negate the “great value” statement. I’d say that in many ways it’s not terribly different, perspective wise, from some of his other crime-centric films.

I think you are supposed to watch it and feel most of what you felt–I felt the same. The problem comes in that feeling that empty vacancy and bankruptcy isn’t really something that you need a master filmmaker or a film to tell you about, and isn’t a massive revelation about this guy, or something powerful enough to truly challenge anyone who sees “great value” in that lifestyle and mindset.

Regardless of what Scorsese actually thinks about his subject, the film about it isn’t one of any value really. Of the two crime-related movies in the holiday season, I greatly preferred American Hustle, and I thought that was just an ok movie with some pretty good performances.

What class are you taking Droid? You going back to school long-term, or is this a one-off thing?

      • Judge Droid says :

The course I’m doing is 3D animation for Screen and Media. It’s a 2 year gig, so fairly long term.

  37. Toadkillerdog says :

As for the ass-whuppin that was laid n the Broncs, i did not see that coming. I thought it would be close, and that Hawks would win, but not like that

  38. Judge Droid says :

    2013 salary

    Tony Romo – $11.5m

    Russell Wilson – $526,000

    Does not compute.

  39. tombando says :

Denver just plain never showed up. Wow. I was not expecting that either. Oh well.

Recent viewing: The Professionals, The Magnificent 7, Around the World in 80 Days, A Night at the Opera. Claudia Cardinale. Very nice.

  40. Judge Droid says :

I can’t take this seriously. It just makes me think of the production of Serpico Max Fischer puts on in Rushmore.

  41. Judge Droid says :

    Recently watched…

Walter Mitty (Stiller version) – Okay.

White House Down – Mildly watchable, but not very good. Olympus Has Fallen is better.

The Counselor – Violent, bleak, mean.

  42. Just Pillow Talk says :

I watched The Eagle again last night….it’s just okay. Still. Tatum I think is decent in it, it’s just sort of a crap storyline with the two if them and the Brits do not have the menace they project in Centurion. Or, not menace per se, but the relentlessness.

  43. Jarv says :

    Hola people.

    Been out of action.

    Watched a lot

Fast 6- not very good. Tank chase is enjoyable, but I was expecting something on the same level as Fast 5. Doesn’t get anywhere near it. Film doesn’t work with them on the same side as the cops, and all the plane stuff feels tacked on.

Byzantium. Terrible. Boring, drab, tiresome vampires shite. Neil Jordan at his worst. Only redeeming feature is Gemma Arteton’s tits.

Firefly. Still don’t get what the nerdgasm is over.

    Zero Hour. Shite

    Paranorman- totally meh.

Also played a lot of Bioshock INfinite and GTA V.

Still think Last of Us is the best game from last year.

    • Judge Droid says :

Fast 6 isn’t nearly as good as 5. And the end scene goes on way too long. One wonders where that airport runway was. Possibly the Daytona 500 racetrack. It seemed an awfully long runway.

      • Judge Droid says :

I preferred GTA V to Last of Us, but both are top notch. Been trying to 100% GTA and Arkham City. And considering replaying Last of Us on hard.

      • Jarv says :

Do the multiplayer in The Last of Us. Just stick to survivor mode and make sure you hit “No parties”.

You’ll get absolutely fucking pwnd for a while, but once you get used to it, it becomes amazingly gripping. It’s easily the bets multiplayer I’ve ever played, and a lot of the reason I rate the game so highly.

        ‘sfucking brilliant.

      • Jarv says :

I’ve 100% Arkham City. It’s inordinately difficult to do. The in game stuff is fairly easy, but you also have to pass the campaigns, and the last one had me crying in tears of rage and hatred.

I eventually did it, but it’s a bastard.

      • Jarv says :

The London bit annoyed me hugely as well.

      • Judge Droid says :

The geography of the London part amused me greatly. How they ended up in Battersea (where I lived) is beyond me.

      • Jarv says :

Yeah, and they went from Regent’s Park near me as well!

Also, the insisting on big fat American muscle cars that can’t go round corners for driving in London was hilarious.

  44. Jarv says :

KP has been fired. As has Flower.

Bad to the former, fanfuckingtastic to the latter.

Worst tour in history for England. The only one I can think of that was worse for any nation was India to England in 2010.

    • Judge Droid says :

I’m amused and bemused by all this. Amused because this whole clusterfuck makes our “Homeworkgate” malarky seem insignificant in comparison. And bemused because KP is being painted as the victim in this, and Cook is the devil. Highly entertained over here.

      • Jarv says :

KP is the victim here. What happened is that Flower issued a “him or me” ultimatum, and it was pointed out that catastrophic failure of selection and tactics meant that he had to sling his hook. Cook, though, with Giles have lobbied to get rid of KP anyway, and won.

The irritating thing, is that, as much as this is worth, he topped the averages in the fiasco. So they’ve sacked the “best” batsmen”.

I’d fire Cook, personally. The way he handled his spinners was outrageously bad. Everything about his performance was.

Time for a major clear out- Swann, KP, Trott and probably Prior are all gone. I’d stick with Bairstow as the gloveman, but have him at 6 with Stokes at 7, Broad at 8, find a fucking spinner from somewhere or look seriously at Rashid.

        I’d want to see:

Carberry (but allowed to play his natural game) or Root opening (they’ve fucked him around something fierce)

Actually, I’ve got no idea for most of them. But the most important thing is to get a new captain and bin Flower’s boring tactics.

      • Judge Droid says :

What I meant by victim is that it seems as though the press and the talkbackers aren’t talking about KP. Like it’s some angelic fucking cricketer who’s done no wrong. Not the guy who’s caused them so much trouble over the past 10 years and only remained in the side because he was pretty much their best batsman.

I liked Jos Buttler in the one dayers. Thought he had potential. He was at least entertaining, which is something that can’t be said for basically anyone in the test team.

      • Jarv says :

I like Buttler as well. Good limited overs biffer. Not a test player yet though, as he barely plays full length for his county.

I’d have a look at Hales for the Test side, though.

      • Jarv says :

Or I’d stick with Carberry for a bit and allow him to play his natural game- i.e. not Flower’s “bore them to death” tactics.

      • Judge Droid says :

Yes Carberry deserves a chance. Still not convinced by Root.

      • Jarv says :

Neither am I. However, he’s 22 with about 10 caps-ish. He’s also been shunted all over the order, told to play against his natural style and generally messed about.

If he was 28, I’d be more concerned. Think the lad needs some time with his county to get his shit back, basically away from England coaches.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

BIffer? What about going with Balin, Boffer or Bombur instead? In fact why not Kili, Fili, Dori, Dwalin, Gloin, Nori, Ori,Oin or Thorin Oakenshield?

      • Judge Droid says :

May as well. Couldn’t get much worse than the crap they sent out here this summer.

      • Jarv says :

Only thing cheering me up is that NZ are ripping India a new arsehole

      • Xiphos0311 says :

I dunno did you see Midgets Walking in NZ 2? It was pretty bad…

  45. Jarv says :

Finally, I have a trial for a new job on Tuesday. (Thank fuck. Running low on funds).

It’s education, damnit, again, which I didn’t want, but it will do for a few months.

  46. Jarv says :

Mrs. Jarv is now nearly 7 months pregnant. It’s a boy, but so far she’s resisting me naming him Inigo. Which is bang out of order, seeing as she already vetoed both Flash and Gordon.

  47. Continentalop says :

Just saw PACIFIC RIM and JOHN CARTER over the last two nights. Jesus fucking Christ did those two films suck. Other than the SFX and look of the films, I can’t think of a redeeming feature for either.

    • tombando says :

Liked Pacific Rim alright but thought the characters were paper thin, you didn’t have a first act to establish the premise well, and that last big monster you just cannot see. No idea why Harold esp. was so kookoo for this thing, it wasn’t THAT good. John Carter I liked okay.

Watched TF 2 and I again, man the drop off in plotting, writing etc from the first to the second is huge. Third at least had the whole Chicago section to recommend. But too many stoopid human tricks first hour plus.

Watched a couple of 1 hour ’52 and ’53 live TV plays—‘Ct Yankee in King Arthur’s Court’ w/ Karloff and Thomas Mitchell–FUN! and ‘Tale of Two Cities’ w/ Wendell Corey and assorted painted backdrops–not too bad. Considering they were kinescopes and just live shots, not bad. Have the fun ’63 Plymouth ads as well.

    • Jarv says :

No redeeming feature to JC. It’s terrible.

Pacific Rim is so stupid I found myself quite liking it.

Wee Japanese Girl played nut job in Norwegian wood.

      • Jarv says :

Worst thing about PR by a long way was Jax Crybaby.

      • Judge Droid says :

I preferred JC to PR. But neither are very good.

      • Jarv says :

PR has moments of hilarious dumbness- the sword thing while flying in the air, for example, whereas JC is a drab and boring experience.

      • Judge Droid says :

I guess part of it comes down to the feeling I got from the two films. To me JC was made by a guy who really, badly wanted to make a great John Carter movie. But ultimately he was kind of overwhelmed by it and it turned out a bit if a mess. But it’s heart was on the right place. With PR I got the feeling that it was GDTs fuck you to the fact he couldn’t get made the monster movie he really wanted to make. So he didn’t seem like he was trying to make a good film. Like “if this is the monster movie you’re going to let me make then I’m going to make it as dumb and repetitive as possible.”

Whether or not any of this is remotely accurate I don’t know. But that’s the feeling I came away with after watching them.

    • kloipy says :

yeah, I really disliked Pacific Rim. If I was 7, I would have loved it. I just think people want to fanboy because it was Guillermo, but it was as bad as a Transformers film and had Bay directed PR the same way, people would have TRASHED it

  48. Continentalop says :

For Xi, since I know how much he loves the French.
