Burt Gummer’s Rec Room- May 2011 Archive

A gathering place for firearms enthusiasts, paranoid survivalists and those who worship at the Church of Chang

It’s May now. I suppose it is too soon to make a Bin Laden joke?

Disclaimer: This is the part of the Church that is the most no holds barred. None of it is intended with malice, and although it can on occasion seem a little bit fraught, it is banter rather than venom.

So far this long weekend I’ve watched some gold…

    The Muppets Movie… Awesome
    Backdraft… Good movie

    and some crap…

Hall Pass… the shit run continues for the Farrelly Brothers.
Vanishing on 7th Street… A nifty set up that goes absolutely fucking nowhere. Would work better as a Twilight Zone-esque tv episode length of around the 40 minute mark. Oh, and Hayden Christensen can’t act.

    • Spud McSpud says :

I’m presuming you ignored the last two STAR WARS Prequels, after which everybody KNEW that Hayden Christensen couldn’t act.

Shame, really – VANISHING ON 7th STREET could have been great. Cracking concept…

    • Droid says :

      Well, the crapfest continues…

I Am Number Four… Garbage with an “alright” (compared to the preceding 90 minutes) actionfest finale. A colossal waste of Olyphantitis. I completely forget that it was directed by DJ Fucking Caruso when I stuck it on. How I blundered past that tidbit I will never know. Anyway, it’s shit and the main bloke is the most unlikeable douchenozzle this side of Bradley Cooper.

Dorian Gray… I read the book recently so I thought I’d give it a whirl. Shit. Loads of inexplicable, pointless changes to the story. It’s actually quite a good story in the filmic sense, and they go and change a bunch of shit. The main guy as Dorian was terrible and Colin Firth was completely miscast as Lord Henry. Has there been a good version filmed, does anyone know?

      • Droid says :

And I also watched Primer this weekend for my Time travel review series. I now have to go ahead and watch it again because it’s fucking confusing. It didn’t help that I was distracted, but nonetheless, it’s complex.

      • Spud McSpud says :

Fucking Alex Pettyfer. After watching TORMENTED (a shitfest so meh-tastic even Jarv should avoid it) I cam to the inescapable conclusion that Alex Pettyfer is the British Hayden Christensen. He’s actually negatively charismatic, in that he actively makes you want to smack him in the face with a shovel. His smug self-satisfaction is in direct inverse proportion with his talent. Incredible.

      • LBronco says :

Ha-Droid It actually like Primer-I love low budget Indies, so here maybe this will help:

        http://scott.sherrillmix.com/blog/reviewer/primer-good-movie-i-think/

        Uh, or maybe not.

For my magum opus-I’ve tried to incorporate time travel, but it’s just such a pain in the ass.

        Multiple dimensions is easier-sort of.

  2. LBronco says :

Xi-thanks for your service to our country.

Secondly, finally finished “Virtues Of War”.

Man, what a slog. By far definitely Pressfields weakest book. I appreciate that he was trying to impart the philosophies that powered the Athens city state, instead of detailing tactics and describing the locales where the Peloponessian War took place,, but for such a gruesome and bloody conflict-the book reads like a phonebook-endless diatribes, very few if any sympathetic characters.

That said, there were many great scenes, and I’m glad I read it, but that one ain’t going into the permanent library.

  3. LBronco says :

alright-Colin farrell has been spotted in a very rare trailer-It’s a remake and he acts like a sexy ass. fucking Mondo ghosto and her Colin Farrell obsession.

    • Spud McSpud says :

Are you talking about FRIGHT NIGHT?? Colin Fucking Farrell is Jery Fucking Dandridge!!

Everything in me is screaming DON’T SEE IT!! but… I must be growing a Jarv gland or something. God help me, I’ll END UP WATCHING IT!!

      • D.Vader says :

        I think its got potential.

      • D.Vader says :

Slashfilm says it just got an R rating, so that’s hopeful.

      • koutchboom says :

I don’t dig the digital grading look of the darkness of it. Also 3D? Especially again with that digital darkening. AND not a fan of that director.

      • D.Vader says :

Well you don’t need to see it in 3D, Koutch.

As for the digital darkening, I can’t really tell here on my computer.

      • koutchboom says :

NOPE I refuse to not see movies in 3D, if they come out that way then thats the way god intended them to be seen.

      • D.Vader says :

If God wanted us to see in 3D he would have given us binocular vision.

  6. koutchboom says :

I’ve thought of another comedy sequel thats better than the original. Harold and Kumar 2 whatever its fucking called. I liked that one a lot better than the first.

    • Spud McSpud says :

I disagree, koutch – the first was WAY funnier. No riding a leopard in the second movie!! And a distinct lack of tasty White Castle burgers, too.

I liked the jail bit at the beginning, but like CRANK 2 before it, it tried just a little bit too hard to be funny. First was better 😀

      • koutchboom says :

I expected too much from the first, it was OK but felt more like a GOOD Recent National Lampoon movie more so than its own comedy. I’ll admit that they tried to do a lot more in part two, but I liked that because part one felt so empty for long streches.

And Crank 2 destroys Crank 1, that movie series is all about excessiveness.

      • MORBIUS says :

        Spud is 100% correct . . .

WHITE CASTLE shits all over GUANTANAMO BAY!

      • Spud McSpud says :

Morbius – Thank you, come again!! 😀

      • Col. Tigh-Fighter says :

H&K2 was so fucking boring I turned it off. And I am a stoner.

1 was hilarious though. And Neil Patrick Harris was a revelation in it.

        2 defo tried to hard.

Crank 2 was shit though, or am I thinking of Transporter 2? Either way…..

      • koutchboom says :

Man I thought H&K 1 was just so lazy. But really I wouldn’t say theres too much difference between the two. I think H&K 1 has 1-2 good laughs but 2 has more over all.

Crank 2 destroys Crank 1, if you don’t think so then you don’t understand the Crank series.

  7. koutchboom says :

    This looks promising!

  8. koutchboom says :

Well what the fuck. Green Lantern isn’t getting a fucking IMAX release? I was planning on driving three hours to see it in the greatest theater ever fucking made! Won’t waste my time for fucking Super 8 but Green Lantern is worth it. FUCK.

  9. koutchboom says :

Can’t tell if this is going to be a Mr. Beaks top film of 2011 or not? Its that new Redo of Sleeping Beauty, see first there’s this:

The requirement: She imbibes a drug that puts her to sleep while paying customers do what they want with her limp body. The only rule, according to the tough manager Clara (Rachael Blake), is no penetration.

ALRIGHT got the rape juicy’s flowing! But then there’s this:

But that’s not a problem for the men who abuse Lucy, since they’re all withered and impotent.

SOOO don’t know if Mr. Beaks will be able to climax without that or what?

  10. just pillow talk says :

ugh…watched the last Narnia movie, which was the worst of the bunch, though Mrs. Pillow liked the dragon in it.

  11. just pillow talk says :

    Surprise!

    Fat fuck loves Super 8.

    Anyone seeing that soon?

    • koutchboom says :

IDK…like I kind of want to but at the same time I could care less. I’m just more pissed that ITS GOING TO IMAX and fucking Green Lantern isn’t??? Who fucking gives a shit about seeing Super 8 in IMax? With hits probably shitty CGI looking monster and giant 4 stories tall lenes flair? FUCK I seriously remember seeing that Lantern was coming to IMAX maybe it never was? What the fuck WB?

      • just pillow talk says :

Oh, I can’t say I blame you, Green Lantern looks like the best of the summer blockbusters.

I dunno about Super 8 though.

  12. LBronco says :

Yeah, I actually think it looks cool. but what the fuck do I know-I liked Cloverfield, but I fucking hated Lost.

    • just pillow talk says :

I thought Cloverfield was…okay. I definitely didn’t hate it like I think most here did.

And Lost blows. I will never understand how that became a hit show and they took Journeyman off the air. Fuckers.

    • Col. Tigh-Fighter says :

I liked Cloverfield for about an hour. As soon as they went back up that knocked over skyscrapper, and that fucking stupid, stupid ending in the park.; it went down the fucking toilet.

Lost was good, sometimes very good, and sometimes bloody stupid. The final series was a total cop-out. But the two seasons before were awesome.

      • just pillow talk says :

On the plus side, they did all die except for the chick who got on the helicopter.

  13. Spud McSpud says :

Just got back from HANGOVER 2. I quite enjoyed it, though I’m notoriously easy to please these days film-wise. It’s exactly what it says on the tin: same as the first movie, but a different locale and slightly different events. Funnier photos at the end, though. If you liked 1, you’ll like 2.

CLOVERFIELD I thoroughly enjoyed, though I saw the ending coming a mile off and I never quite shook the idea that they were all fucking douchebags and got what they deserved. (Except for Lizzy Caplan – that chick is hot).

As for LOST… FUCK LOST. Four exceptional seasons, and two seasons of unintelligible senselessness. There’s no more clear example of sudden fame+huge pay+coked-out-of-their-minds-writers+no idea where the plot is going=greatest televisual disappointment in the history of the medium. That finale couldn’t have been a bigger FUCK YOU to the audience if they’d tried. Fucking cop-out hack cunts, fuck the lot of them. FUCK LOST, AND FUCK YOU ABRAMS, YOU HACK CUNT.

    • koutchboom says :

See I think the photos at the end are part of why Hangover 2 fell sort of flat and ‘repeated’, the repeat factor didn’t bother me its well done, but first off WAY too much shit was given away in the trailer, when really for that movie NOTHING needed to be said about it to get just as big of an opening. They probably could’ve released the movie without a real trailer.

But the photos at the end I’ve stopped and thought about this for a while. Well first off you probably didn’t see Brad Coops and Todd Phillips give some of the photos in interviews (I’m mainly thinking of something you only see in Aussie/Artie Lang films) but really the photos weren’t nearly as effective as they were in the first one. This is because a lot of the photos in the first one were of random shit not gone over in the movie, where as this time they pretty much showed you what they had gone over there was only like one random act that they hadn’t gone over in the movie, but most of it was like…OHHH ok thats how that happened and thats how that happened and thats that. Where as the first one there were a couple of those photos but a majority of them were random shit, sort of like bringing up MORE questions rather then just giving us answers. There clearly was a huge difference in the audience leaving the theater for each movie movie. Even when I was waiting for Hangover 2 to let out and I saw them coming out, yeah people seemed fine no one looked pissed but no one was still laughing. When I left Hangover 1 four weeks after it had come out people were laughing all the way to the parking lot.

But really its a fine sequel about everything you’d expect, anyone with ANY sort of expectations is an idiot, but giving away too much in the trailer and weak photos at the end could’ve been changed. Also with the end photos (I’ll give an example its given away in the trailer so its not a surprise) Alan wakes up with a shaved head, but there are 2-3 pictures wasted on this act? Like who cares? It wasn’t anything funny, just them shaving his head in a room? Sure you could show one photo of them laughing at him shaving his head but that along with a couple of other things just wasted the pictures.

Lizzy looked mighty fine in True Blood.

Deadfall… Awful fucking movie. And Cage’s performance is amusing initially, but quickly becomes hugely annoying.

Get Low… Good little movie. Decent performances.
