Burt Gummer’s Rec Room – January and February 2013 Archive

A gathering place for paranoid survivalists and those who worship at the Church of Chang

January 2013, Looks like the Mayans were wrong. Damned if I’m decommissioning my arsenal though.

Disclaimer: This is the part of the Church that is the most no holds barred. None of it is intended with malice, and although it can on occasion seem a little bit fraught, it is banter rather than venom. So, be warned that this is like taking a naked swim in a piranha tank and not recommended for the faint of heart.

Who the fuck said CRAZY STUPID LOVE was good?

    • Judge Droid says :

I did. I liked it for the most part. Hated Moore’s character, but otherwise it was fairly entertaining.

      • Jarv says :

I didn’t hate it, which was remarkable considering it has new upgraded sack of cocks Ryan Gosling in it, and Juliane Moore who I normally despise.

        Hated her character, mind.

It had some funny moments, some decent acting and characters, and some good scenes (like the one shot “montage” of Steve Carrell picking up girls was excellent), but overall it was pat, cliched, forced and untruthful. The speech at the climax was painfully bad, and the entire theme of the film was absolute bullshit. The idea of soul mates and one true loves is childishly simple, and chasing after someone and never giving up on them isn’t romance or love, it is stalking and obsession.

It was properly titled though. The characters were crazy and stupid.

I liked it too. If you watched it in subtitles maybe you would have liked it.

    Last night watched Monkeybone,

Which may well be the worst movie ever made. It’s honestly in the bottom 5 legitimate films that I’ve seen (ignoring silly crap like Thundercrack!)

Only sat through it because I really like Bridget Fonda, but it’s so relentlessly awful that I wanted to slap everyone involved with it.

  3. Jarv says :

Other than that, nothing of note really.

New work website is fan-fucking-tastic. I deserve a raise.

Or I will do when it’s launched. Which is remarkable, because it’s probably the first bit of work I’ve done in 2 years.

I’m shutting this rec-room today. It’s creakier than the Aussie Batting line up, and slower than Jonathan Trott.

    Just FYI

I saw the Glenn Ford 3:10 to Yuma….damn good movie….damn good. I really thought the lead performances were great…a much better flick than the Crowe-Bale version. I highly recommend it.

    • Judge Droid says :

I’ve seen that. I liked it, and it does have good performances. But I actually preferred the Crowe version. But both are good.

      • Just Pillow Talk says :

I actually thought the Ford version was more focused…I should watch the Crowe one again. I liked it…but it seemed to have some extra stuff just trying to show he was a bad ass.

      • Judge Droid says :

They added in a lot more to the new one. From memory the old one spends a long time just in the hotel room.

    • Continentalop says :

The Mangold version is good but it tries to hard and throws too much shit at you like it’s afraid you’ll get bored.

The originally is leaner, and Van Heflin’s character’s one motive, financial desperate, makes him way more sympathetic and believable than Bale’s 3-4 motives and tags (financial, proving himself to his son, loss of his leg, etc).

  6. tombando says :

    Van Heflin>Bale. Search yer feelings.
