Burt Gummer’s Rec Room- June 2010 Archive
A gathering place for firearms enthusiasts, paranoid survivalists and those who worship at the Church of Chang.
Disclaimer: This is the part of the Church that is the most no holds barred. None of it is intended with malice, and although it can on occasion seem a little bit fraught, it is banter rather than venom.
Remember: in an underground bunker with an arsenal large enough to kill the popualtion of Bolivia no-one can hear you scream.
ebert is getting increasingly grumpy about 3d. I wonder if this is going to be the genral critical reaction to this thing:
http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100630/REVIEWS/100639999
remember too, this is the man who gave The Happening 3 stars.
Personally, I didnt hate Airbender, although it isnt good. It actually ends up being enjoyable in a dopey way. I think half a star is prety harsh. Then again, I’ve never watched the anime, and strangely, it sounds like Ebert has.
Yeah I don’t get why Ebert is even fucking seeing movies in 3-D?
The Happening wasn’t in 3D.
Eberts had a grumpy week. The first 4 movies on his website are 1/2, 2, 2, and 2. He usually dishes out 4 stars like he’s accidentally bought too many and he’s trying to get rid of them.
Jonah tossed ya the Mummy write-up. Or as I like to think, the further adventures of Benny and John Hannah. It’s a fun flick for what it is to my thinking.
Funny Nerd news post-hilarious talkback:
http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/06/29/unveiling-wonder-woman%E2%80%99s-new-costume-direction/
Nooiiieeeeesssssssss!!! :-p
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Wonder Woman has been rebooted for the 44th time.
Fanboys revolt and/or whine.
In other news, Goats are ravaged in Portugal, Oil Spills suck, and the Cubs are tanking.
Now Now Good Sir!
It makes me wonder if you even bothered to check about the article in question, and to whether you have the basic cognitive capacity to form an opinion about a comic-book franchise newest costume conundrum.
You wound me, sir.
You really do!
I did read (some of) it.
I think Conan’s Drums were put in storage when he got Leno’ed. But I could check to make sure.
I think Diana should be turned into a Giant Robot and be done w/ it. That’d solve plenty of DC’s problems.
Or-naught.
Have a bagel.
I think the funbags are still represented in their natural form, but the mini jacket is so 1994.
I worry about DC Comics Legacy.
This is very, very important-what if Nolan views this?!?
I’m very, very worried.
So long as they bring back Sam Simeon and Bobo, Detective Chimp–I’m happy. Gorilla City never had it so bad.
THATS why Rango looks so damn good, it’s the first animated movie by ILM. FUCK it’s going to destory Pixar.
Why the fuck do you always bring up Pixar when talking about any non-Pixar animated film? Who gives a shit if “it will destroy Pixar”?
Rango looks okay. Mildy amusing. And that’s primarily because the main character reminded me of Kermit and I was probably projecting memories of my beloved Muppets onto it.
I’m just talking about animation level. Watch that trailer again the level of animation of that thing is gorgeous. Plus if I don’t bring up Pixar, then what else is there? Do you give a shit about Blue Sky, Ardman, Sony, Dreamworks, Lucasfilm, the Delgo guys?
Okay, so you say the animation looks gorgeous. So? What does that have to do with Pixar? Why will it “destroy” Pixar? It’s just odd how you constantly bring it up whenever you talk about an animated film.
Well lets face it Pixar is pretty much the gold standard of animation to most people these days. And I just think that the animation in Rango is going to be amazing compared to the animation in Pixar films. People always go CRAZY over the detail and look of Pixar films. I think they are getting a little too bright and cheery looking and obviously cartoon. Plus they haven’t done much in terms of style this whole time. Sure every animation studio is always going to have a certain animation style, just would be nice to Pixar mix it up a bit.
Plus a lot of people left ILM to work for Pixar, or help created Pixar or something. So there IS that.
Sure, this little billygoat will go ahead and walk over the bridge, even though he knows he shouldn’t.
Rango, as Droid mentions, looks ‘interesting’ but that’s about it. Honestly, I think anyone trying to dethrone Pixar is going to fail, because they aren’t going about it the right way. We don’t need more family freindly kid’s movies in the animated form. We need good movies period. Pixar, like many movie artists before them, found that the channel by which they could make good films was family friendly animated. And they do it well. No one is going to ‘destroy’ them with one film.
You want to impress me with animation, do something different than this already stuffed sub-genre of the animated film. Go out and make a Fantastic Planet and then I’ll pay attention. Otherwise, I’ll just yawn and wait and give it a try on dvd unless I get a free screening out of the deal.
I’m also curious as to what actually changed your mind about Pixar Koutch. Last glance, even the movie most of us here don’t care much for, Cars, you admitted to liking. So, if it’s not the films, are you seriously telling me that the toys—which you professed to finding cool—are what gets your goat?
I think you guys read too much into that. I was just merely stating from animation point of view Rango is going to probably be better then anything pixar has every done. Like if there were a record for best animation and pixar held the title, Rango is going to have a much better record. I didn’t actually mean take Pixar as a studio down, Pixar seems to be doing a fine job of that themselves (that’ll become more clear when Cars 3 is announced).
I still love Pixar, I more hate the fact that people act like if it ain’t Pixar it AIN’T WORTH watching, when it comes to animation. Last year proved that the animation world has fucking taken notice from the example Pixar has set, and last year was an AMAZING year for animation. Yet no one could shut the fuck up about Up. Up was OK probably 3 or 4th best animated movie of that year. Just waiting for the turn around when all of the sudden people realize that there is other great animation out there besides Pixar, and Rango could be that one, it’s got a lot going for it. I actually think it looks like a cool story, it looks like a Hunter S. Tompson cartoon, he even makes a cameo some how. So think about that.
Depp is the voice of the main character so that’s how Hunter makes an appearance I guess.
There is plenty of animation that people go apeshit over. That Dragon movie made a bundle of cash. It’s just that WE don’t usually go apeshit over animation. Me personally, I tend to avoid most of it, unless it’s particularly recommended (like Dragons, which I will watch sometime) or it’s Pixar. I simply have nearly unbeatable confidence in their films. They will at least be good. I didn’t like Cars, out of something like 10 films? That’s an amazing track record. I didn’t like Shrek that much, apart from Murphy. I don’t like Mike Myers (apart from Waynes World). Shrek 2 and 3 are blatant, pathetic cash grabs and I assume the 4th is as well. Ice Age sucks. All 3 of them.
To be honest, the only animations I like are Pixar and Aardman. I’m open to others, but the track record is poor.
The best animated film of 2009 (that I saw) was Fantastic Mr Fox. UP was 2nd.
Let’s see. I don’t think there’s anyone here who thinks only good animation is made by Pixar. I was recommending HTTYD here before anyone else, same for Mary and Max and Fantastic Mr. Fox, etc. Millover was also advocating Dragons if I recall. Jarv wrote a terrific review of Perseplois. I’ve often heard Droid wax poetic about the joys of tentacle porn.
I don’t think this audience needs to be Pixar deprogrammed.
Yeah that’s fine. I know you guys know better. But most other people got no fucking clue. Like I said I was just saying shit. And like I said, this is probably ILM’s big FUCK you to Pixar. But who knows it could suck, I don’t even like Gore that much, nor am I a huge fan of Hunter S. Tompson. But i think it looks really cool.
And sure How To Train Your Dragon made a good amount of money, but Toy Story 3 made more then it’s entire epic run in under 2 weeks. Shrek 4 made more as well. If anything How To Train Your Dragon was the realisation that Pixar isn’t the only show in town.
Pixar is simply Disney of 50 years ago. It is the major animation studio. Only now, there are alot of others and their output is gradually getting better, for the most part. If Dragon was a great movie, that’s good for animation in general.
Sorry mate, I need that decoded. Is that some sort of anime reference or something?
Yeah Koutch, that’s totally Hunter S. Thompson in the convertible.
That trailer looks pretty fucking good.
I like the first two Ice Age flicks, don’t usually care for Dreamworks (but will admit to enjoying Shark Tale-hangs head in shame), thought Shrek was okay but never needed to see the sequel(s), need to see Persepolis.
Anime isn’t for me. Leaves me cold. I do however like me some Tex Avery.
Yeah, I love Looney Tunes. Daffy Duck is awesome.
5NAL DESTINATION
Fucking hell that’s utter shit.
Coming soon…
Final Destin8ion
F9al Destination
Final Destina10
ugh.
Droid-the worst previews talkbackers and the guy pointed out one fact about the name:
5NAL Destination can be easily be misread to read:
ANAL Destination.
Which, as the WP reviewer pointed out: “Is a whole different movie”.
cue snare shot!
Ahhh Cha Cha Cha-I’ll be here all week-who drove here in an Airstream?
Meh.
Watching Gomorrah. May be the review for tomorrow.
What do you think? I really liked it, but I couldn’t pin point why. It felt like a documentary more then a movie.
I watched first 10 minutes-was blown away but then I cancelled netflix so couldn’t finish it up…
Gubbed in the cricket today. Well played Aus.
Too fucking late
Yep. Much too late. Still, shows we haven’t totally lost it. Unhealthy reliance on a superb batting performance though.

Altogether now: “Press the fucking ball!”
Yeah, I saw this the other day. Love the part where he’s shoving around Stuart Pearce. To be fair, if I was England manager i’d be stalking the sideline with an aluminium baseball bat just waiting for the players to come off.
“Rooney you overpaid pug ugly cunt, if you’re going to play like utter shit you can have two shattered knee caps for your troubles.”
THWACK!!!
That bit’s great – ‘sit down… did you sit down already? Well get up then…’ Priceless.
Did you see Lennon with his feet up, smoking a cigar?
They clearly don’t understand the gravity of the situation…
Didn’t see it, but heard there was an uproar about the players smiling and enjoying themselves after the game.
If I was involved in that “performance” I’d get stuck into the booze and stogies as well.
Here they are:

Tossers.
I don’t really have a problem with it. They’re just sitting around having a few beers. They’re dickheads of course, and they played like utter shit, but it’s not like every single other team that just got dumped out of the tourney wouldn’t be doing the exact same thing.
I don’t mind them doing it, but I’d rather not see them doing it.
Ummm why don’t you English soccer fans start taking your Football more seriously?

K-Boom-it’s some rather incalculable difference involving grit vs. sand.
I worry for the In-Ger-Landers at certain times.
I really do.
Hmmm-I think we have a viral video-possibly?
perhaps-let’s see what AOTS thinks…
PTFB!!!
Gomorrah- wow.
The thing is, I was watching it thinking meh, then the postscript flashes up and the whole films thumps into perspective. Koutch is right it’s a dramatised documentary.
Yeah it’s a weird film, you are watching it enjoying it not totally sure why you are so engrossed in it, then the end happens and you are like WOW. I love that song over the credits too. I tend to not like mob movies and liked how this one showed a real mob. It is the Italian version of City of God though, there is also the Central American version of City of God as well, can’t remember the name that’s pretty good. None of them are AS good as God though, nor as stylish.
City of God it ain’t though. Although it would love to be
Well, you could say City of God would love to be GoodFellas.
Most movies wished they were Goodfellas
Goodfellas is on tv. Liotta just bashed the shit out of some bloke that abused his missus. Fuck he’s good in this.
Agreed.
Ever see him in Narc? as Henry Oak?
Nice later period Liotta work, too.
Yeah, Narc is a great movie. Back when I thought Carnahan was a director to watch, not avoid.
Liotta was pretty good in ‘Blow’ also, basically playing against type there. And they cast his wife as strongly resembling Lorraine Bracco’s character from Goodfellas, at least that’s how it looked to me. Rather nice job there.
Liotta was pretty awesome in Smokin Aces/Bee Movie/Date Movie as well!
Don’t forget Wild HogS——
Revolver.
FUCK!!! Dickbloods Buckaroo Banzai poster blows mine out of the water.
There is still time for any of you who want to make one. DO IT JUST FUCKING DO IT! It’s a lot of fun, and people are starting to do really good ones, just look at that second poster.
