Burt Gummer’s Rec Room

A gathering place for paranoid survivalists and those who worship at the Church of Chang

August 2015: Dryer than a bone, and hotter than the surface of the sun- yup, it’s summertime in Perfection and El Blanco is on the prowl.

Disclaimer: This is the part of the Church that is the most no holds barred. None of it is intended with malice, and although it can on occasion seem a little bit fraught, it is banter rather than venom. So, be warned that this is like taking a naked swim in a piranha tank and not recommended for the faint of heart.

Supernatural S15 ep1 the beginning of the end(Not the episode title) I thought it was a decent start to the final season. It was a fairly typical SN Episode with them fighting a bunch of God/Chuck resurrected bad guys the Boys had put down in previous years. There was a lot of table setting that needed to be done but all in all a fairly strong start to the final season. The best part of the episode was at the end with the scene between Sam and Dean and them basically saying fuck we’ll save everybody and screw god we don’t need him. It was music to my ears.

Succession season finale. Man was that a strong one. Kendall going rouge and scorched earth was a thing of beauty. The scene where everybody was throwing everyone under the bus was a riot and cousin Greg is still a douche nozzle and Tom finally standing up for himself with Logan and Shiv was both impressive and head shakingly weak at the same time. That’s good writing folks. Roman sort of wising up was something I didn’t expect from him but being held hostage can do that to a person.

The Righteous Gemstones season finale. Meh they had exactly one funny episode out of eight. Danny McBride sucks outside of Vice Principals, Edi Patterson OTOH is a national treasure. The one funny scene in the entire episode that didn’t directly involve Patterson, though she was in it and hilarious, was the Baby Billy scene near the end. I will not be tuning into season two.

Mr. Robot. This thing is just much too convoluted for its own good but I’m stuck now since its the final season.

Seems like there should be more but I guess I ended up watching a bunch of older shows last week while I recovered from some injuries incurred at work.

Yeah, agree on Supernatural episode 1. The possession of Jack by the demon, whatever. Sam and Dean realizing ALL the demons, ghosts are sent free, everyone they ever put in hell are free after stumbling across the blood splattered car on the side of road…nice.

And they would only have that response once they knew they were finally truly on their own.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the final season, sniffle. I hope it stays true to the vision they layed out. If so it might turn out to be an excellent swan song for SN.

Been watching a few VHS thingies of late…

*Dancing With Wolves, of course the two tape edition with 4 or so hours of it.

Still holds up well, fun to see Wes Studi, Floyd Red Crow there, Tantoo and Graham Greene doing their things. I’m not so sure it deserved the Oscar over Goodfellahs, but-it’s worthy in it’s own right. I wish they made more films like this one. Costner directed this too?! Dang good job.

      Tontonka. Or whatever it was.

I had forgotten about this part! that was funny. Movie as said holds up quite well.

Watched my Theresa Russell/Adam Baldwin Showtime Skinamax VHS ‘Trade Off’ from 1996. You know-Let’s kill Spouses! then you find out one of the spouses is in on it, double crossings, etc. Theresa does her sleazy R rated Raunch bit, and tosses in a terrible Southern Accent alongside. Adam Baldwin is the put upon dumbox she grabs onto, he’s got this blank look on his face the whole time. You don’t feel sorry for him. You see Barry Primus hanging around as a would be Columbo type, he winds up shot for his pains.

I donno, they had Russell trot out the same movie on CBS a year later in ‘When you meet a stranger’, a gender flip on the ‘Strangers on a Train’ formula save it’s her and Jacqueline Bissette jousting. Never saw it. Always thought Russell was better than her parts and career.

Nothing better than a little Army of Darkness to start off a morning.

Listen up you primitive screwheads, this is my BOOMSTICK.

I’ve got to shoot some Kudos over to the CBS show Evil. While not being very good it went way darker in the fourth episode then I would think a procedural show on CBS would ever attempt or even contemplate. So for that good job. Now fix all your other problems like the four adorable moppets you hung around the neck of the lead actress. I know what you are trying to do with that story line, I get it I really do, however children on TV shows usually suck as characters and these four certainly do.

The new TV shows this season on Network and Cable mostly suck. I’ve either bailed on them, am going to bail or can’t even care enough to watch or bail.
The only exception so far, has been Stumptown. Its alright and they had Donal Louge on for a couple of episodes which was a smart move that dude makes things better.Cobie Smulders is going all in and its working so far.
My major quibble with the show is how far they have toned down the fucktarded weirdness pf Portland OR. The other MAJOR league issue I have is the one huge departure from the funny book its based on, is that they had to make her a Marine vet with PTSD. They’ve also glossed over the whole bisexual aspect of the character which was a minorly import part of the comic. since the show is on network TV that part of her identity won’t amount to much, now on HBO or Cinemax however….

Lemme see more VHS Western viewing…

*Open Range-2003 Costner/Duvall. Saw it in theatre couple times. Still good. Still worthy. I like.

*Jeremiah Johnson-1972 Redford/Grampa Walton Jim Bridger type thing. Trappers, Rockies, Indians, etc. Always like this one too. It has the reporter from the Bixby Hulk show and Mr Bently from the Jeffersons too! You might wanna see it again if you haven’t in a while. Sidney Pollack directed it too!

*Geronimo-1993 Wes Studi/Matt Damon(way before he was MATT DAMON), Gene Hackman and most of the Sioux guys from Dances with Wolves as Apaches this time out. I like this one too. It’s not great, Studi in the lead is…well he’s a type ala Lee Van Cleef to me, and better in things like Last of Mohicans or the Fugitive sequel. But it works. Jason Patrick AKA Jackie Gleason’s grandkid is in here too. He’s not bad. Lota canyons and AZ desert stuff here.

*Quigley Down Under-1990 Sagging PI/Alan Rickman Aussie ‘Western’. This isn’t bad, your basic Shane kinda plotline, I enjoy it. The scenery’s fine and the shootouts etc worthwhile. Selleck was born about 20 years too late he woulda been Robert Taylor or Joel McCrae otherwise.

*To Be or Not to Be–1942 Jack Benny/Carole Lombard/Sig Rummann WW2 dramady set in Warsaw, the theatre-troupe gets into it with the Nazis, farce and satire abound, but there’s a serious undercurrent to the whole works. It’s quite a film. Jack Benny’s great and Lombard too, she was gone in a planecrash a couple months after filming ended, doing a Bonds drive.

Glass – I thought it was decent enough and I admit, I did not see it coming how it ended with their storylines.

Watchmen – So, very different from the movie from just one episode. Lots of stuff thrown out there without much behind it as of yet. Blue guy did make an appearance, albeit on a tv show. I don’t have a feeling on this one yet, so I will check out a few more episodes.
