BOOK REVIEW: MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS

the-men-who-stare-at-goats-bookThe alternate title to this post could be “XIPHOS TAKES ONE FOR THE TEAM”. This is a badly written book which is surprising since author Jon Ronson’s previous work, Them: Adventures with Extremist, was a well written and much better book.

I ‘m not going to spend a lot of time with this review because it doesn’t merit much attention. I’ll just hit the highlights or more accurately the low-lights in this book. In the first thirty pages Ronson makes such egregious errors that I have to conclude that:

1.) Ronson did no research.

2.) He only wanted to grind his ax.

3.) This was a quickie book to follow up on the success his first book.

4.) Ronson is, to use the wonderful English term, “taking the piss” on us all.

Anybody that seriously uses “psychic” Uri Geller and his dumb spoon bending ass as a source is obviously just here to cash a check. Also Ronson either doesn’t understand how Special Forces Medic training works or more than likely doesn’t care. I have news for him, using goats for medic training is not some big secret. It has been known for years and I’m 99% sure that most of the training for SF medics doesn’t even occur on Ft. Bragg. Bragg is where the training battalion for medics is headquartered. It’s in the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Special Warfare School and Center.

Also, from page to page, the tone of the book shifts radically, the men who “stare at goats/kill them” don’t even exist. There are so many different people alleged to have done it, it smacks of BS. Nobody can say for sure who did it. Was it the civilian Martial Arts expert? Was it the former Green Beret/Mercenary that died under mysterious conditions? (He was run over by a jeep trying to prove he could survive getting run over by a jeep. What a rube.) And the goat killing is really only about 10 pages out of the entire book

Lastly, most of the book is spent confusing two different dopey “psychic” warfare units that existed and did absolutely nothing in reality. The first was the “Stargate” program of remote viewers and the First Earth Battalion of “warrior monks” or as the movie trailer calls them Jedi Warriors.

In closing, skip this book. It’s not even mildly entertaining. Go read Ronson’s other book Them. That book is actually well written, researched and a good read. I know this is a very quick review so if anybody has any questions concerning the book, I will be happy to answer them in the talk back.

Mahalo,

Take the conspracy away from them and you an… AICN basement dwelling troll Talkbacker or an “asimovelives”.

Or the artist formerly known as Homewrecker.

  2. Xiphos says :

Ah the suppossed “North American Union” as much as I don’t believe in the federal goverment and I know they are lying fucking thieving cocksuckers, I can’t believe people fall for this one. Except for one line in a speech by Bill Clinton there hasn’t even been a mention of that let alone a suggestion in a bill or anything.

  3. M. Blitz says :

FUCK. I hate when people throw around the term “Nazism” with ZERO sense of historical specificity. The whole ‘Zionists are actually Nazis’ trope needs to stop.

And I never read “cognitive dissonance” to mean “lying to yourself.”

  4. Xiphos says :

Ahhh Homewrecker. I was not around for his hey day, i came back on board later. So Jarv how is it being part of DocP? is it neat?

  5. Xiphos says :

Shit time to go to sleep. I’ve committed about five times the normal amount of assault on the English language then normal.

  6. M. Blitz says :

Good night Xi. And Happy Marines Day to you.

  7. Jarv says :

Yes, Xi, but they would say that.

  8. Xiphos says :

    Thank you Blitz.

    true Jarv…

  9. Jarv says :

Holy shit. He’s got a new site-

    and it’s a wordpress one:

    http://homewreckerreturns.wordpress.com/

  10. M. Blitz says :

Whoever homewrecker is, he has an unhealthy obsession with ain’t it cool news. Or rather, with “aicn neoconzionists” as he put it. Because neoconzionists are one thing, but neoconzionists who like movies??? Well…

    This made me laugh, though:
AHMADINEJAD: Oh…that’s why women born into wealth are even worse,
right? look at those women leaving those men to go to the ladies room.
Here is why American women go to the bathroom together.
because theyre gay. and the american male is only a chauffeur,
paying for the drinks. this is why you want to bomb us.

Because I believe in being even handed, here is a review of the book/movie Men Who Stare at Goats by noted Skeptic Michael Shermer. He takes a diffrent tact about the book then I did.

  12. Jarv says :

He’s actually a dangerous nazi freak. I’m not joking about that, he’s a proper McVeigh extremist.

  13. M. Blitz says :

Aw, Shermer. I’m on his eSkeptic email list.
And I almost never read them….

I do appreciate how respectful he is when he debates assholes on the news. But Bill Nye is my favorite media skeptic. So dashing!

  14. M. Blitz says :

Yikes! Does homewrecker have any alternate aicn identities that you know of?

  15. Jarv says :

    At least 2.

Zfisk and I’ve forgotten the other one. He’s a sonofabitch.

    However, he’s very easily spotted.

    On that note, I’m off.

  16. xiphos0311 says :

Blitz have you ever read the amazing randi’s skeptical blog or Robert Parks, Bill Schaffers or Phil Plaits?

  17. xiphos0311 says :

Jarv is the other Zfisk name Homewrecker?

  18. M. Blitz says :

The Amazing Randi has a blog? Sounds like fun. I’ll check it out!

  19. xiphos0311 says :

    Blitz,

Randi’s website is Randi.org. Unfortunatly Randi had a bad heart attack a few yers ago and now he has cancer so pretty much he just writes a collum occasionally. Phil Plait “the bad Astronamer” and another dude run it now. Its tone is a bit diffrent from the Randi days but its still a very good read most of the time. So is the Skeptics blog above where I got the Shermer post from.

  20. xiphos0311 says :

Shermer is great at debating especially the creationist nutbags. Shermer never gets flustered as far as i know and he’s always civil and man he has the facts down cold. Phil Plaite is pretty good also.

  21. M. Blitz says :

Yeah, Shermer manages to keep his cool in moments when I think my head would be about to explode.

Favorite thing I’ve ever heard from nutty Creationists? That there actually were dinosaurs on the Ark. But they were eaten. Because, as he put it, “imagine how many tacos you could get out of a brontosaurus.”

    Brontosaurus tacos!!!

  22. xiphos0311 says :

Blitz do you know that there is a creationist museum? Inside of it is a recreation of the Noah’s arc. Care to hazard a guess what animals are represented inside the ark? Hint thinK petroleum.

I don’t have as big of an issue with creationist as I do with the intelligent Design knob jobs. At least the creationist have the balls to stand up and say “look at me I’m a retard”. The ID assholes are creationist that don’t have the courage of thier own convictions so they hide under psudoscience and lies. Fuck those clown shoes.

  23. M. Blitz says :

Ohhhh yeah. The Creationist museum. I’ve seen the videotaped tours on youtube. (which is also where i got the brontosaurus line).

As for Intelligent Design pushers, yes, they are infuriating. How fucking hard is it to understand that science is not the same thing as religion? Maddening. I suppose people can believe what they want, just don’t call insist that it’s taught in science class when it doesn’t qualify.

And then on the other hand, you have science-y types occasionally pushing back in a rather religious manner in their defense of science, which doesn’t do any favors to their cause. Very frustrating.

  24. Jarv says :

    Fucking ID bastards.

Fucking hate the lying cocksucking toe-rags.

    They’re as bad as conspiratards.

  25. Tom_Bando says :

Was this book (at least in part) written in Almada–?

  26. Jarv says :

No, it would have come back soiled, and nobody wants that. By the way, Tom check out Barfy’s AICN rip off with this. It’s genius.

  27. xiphos0311 says :

The ID asshats are particularly annoying becasue they are lying. At least teh creationist stand up for thier nonsense and I can respect THAT at least even if I think are missing chromosomes and have unbranched DNA.

  28. Tom_Bando says :

It’s all a lie anyways. We’re weebles being played w/ by Giant Robots and stuck their collective toy boxes when finished. Pretty clear.

  29. xiphos0311 says :

Once again Bando speaks the truth.
