Droids Movie Confessions

I saw this over at brother Kloipy’s place, and well, decided to steal it.

Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

Blade Runner.

I appreciate the film on a purely visual level, but I binned it twice before managing to get through the film on the third try. The film is too impersonal and I simply cannot get involved in the story.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

Metropolis
Gone With The Wind
Nashville
The Last Picture Show
The Magnificent Seven
Spartacus
Walkabout
King Kong (1933)
Duck Soup
The Third Man

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

Only once. I snuck in to Scream. I had two hours to kill before the screening and decided to go see a movie before it, and then just switch cinemas. Unfortunately that movie was Michael, so I learned a valuable lesson that day. Crime doesn’t pay.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

This is an obvious one. Our Nic. I’ve only ever seen one good Kidman performance, and that was in ‘To Die For’. She also annoys the crap out of me.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?

Akira Kurosawa. Because I’m a heathen. I’ve always intended on watching his movies, I’ve just never got around to doing so.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

There are plenty of examples, but one that springs to mind is Sahara. People seem to despise this movie. I thought it was a lot of fun.

Have you ever been “one of those annoying people” at the cinema?

Nope.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

Of course. I’ve pretty much seen the entire works of Winona Ryder because I used to have a big thing for her. I’ve sat through utter drivel like How to make an American Quilt because of her. She’s evil.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

I’ve never written a movie off because it was subtitled. There are situations when I have chosen not to watch a subtitled film. If it’s late, or if I’m going to be cooking dinner or something where I know I won’t be able to give the film my full attention.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

No. But there are movies I’ve seen before that I’ve bought and haven’t got around to watching. See the next question for examples.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

I have Scream 3 and 4 because I’m a dimwitted completionist. I also picked up Drive Angry for a few quid because I wanted to give it another shot, this time with appropriate expectations. If anything, it was even worse on second viewing.

I still own them because I’m a hoarder.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?

Enormous bean bag FTW!!!

Any other confessions you want to make?

I’m writing this because I’m at work and very, very bored.

Cheers,

Droid

Nice Droid! Loved reading yours. It was fun to write for me and I feel like a weight is lifted (my love of Hannibal aside) to be open about some stuff I either love/hate and some of the stuff I’ve never seen. I know there are a lot of classics I should have seen by now (and should have been replaced by other stuff like Deadgirl) but I’m hoping to get around to them someday. Great write up

    • Droid says :

HA! Hannibal!?!?!? Man, I hated that movie. I don’t think I can bring myself to watch it again.

Cheers for stealing the idea. When you list the films that you haven’t seen, then think about the garbage that you have, it makes you a bit ashamed of yourself. I mean, I’ve seen Little Man, but I haven’t seen Metropolis.

      *hangs head in shame*

  2. ThereWolf says :

Heh. I’m gonna do one of these. I’ll use it as an interim post before I have to review those bastard Next Gen Trek movies…

Try and see the ‘restored’ cut of ‘Metropolis’ if you can. You’ve got a few crackers on that ‘classic’ list…

    Nice one.

  3. Xiphos0311 says :

Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

The Shawshank Redemption. I don’t use the word hate a lot but I flat out fucking hate the blandly directed nakedly manipulative shit pile and I fucking can’t stand Tim Robbins, its chemical.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

    Breakfast at Tiffany’s
    Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
    North by Northwest
    Some Like It Hot
All Quite on the Western Front
    Midnight Cowboy
    Philadelphia Story
    It Happened One Night
    His Girl Friday
    Annie Hall

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

    Most of them

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?

Can’t think of any there are more then a few I wish I could unsee

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

fuck yes all the time because of the high cost of tickets and low entertainment value of most movies they owe me.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

Can’t think of one due to the fact that i don’t care if somebody hates what i like or likes what i hate

Have you ever been “one of those annoying people” at the cinema?

    Nope

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

Can’t think of a specific one but its probably happened.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

Yep I refuse to watch subtitles like my ass is on fire and my hair is catching. I just want to be entertained and not read and you miss half the dialog and shit going above the subtitle box fuck that noise. I also tend to avoid foreign language movies including all the ones i speak. If it isn’t in English its shit. Even if its in English its probably going to be shit nowadays but at least i don’t have to read subtitles.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

    Nope don’t have a collection

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

    see above

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?

I have a cheap 42″ Vizio i bought at Wal-Mart and an even cheaper Sony sound system I bought at the Camp Pendleton base exchange. They are more then adequate for my needs since I’m not a techno geek.

Any other confessions you want to make?

I once shot a man in Reno to watch him die

    • kloipy says :

Good list Xi. I’d say see North By Northwest. I would normally add Annie Hall to the list, but i think you wouldn’t like it.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

I’ve seen bits and pieces of Annie Hall but never the whole magilla in order from start to finish

      • kloipy says :

i really love it (but I’m biased to Allen’s work) because it is funny, clever, and doesn’t have the typical ‘rom-com’ ending to it. It says a lot about relationships, why we want them/need them and how they change us.
North by Northwest is just classic Hitch and you can’t go to wrong with him

      • Xiphos0311 says :

I’m biased against Allen’s work the other way I can’t the whinny little bitch.

      • kloipy says :

haha! don’t blame you. I could understand why people don’t like him

      • Xiphos0311 says :

plus the weirdo only had like one funny line and the borderline Pedo stuff is more of a turn off.

      • kloipy says :

I saw a post on a site recently ranking favorite Polanski films…

      • Xiphos0311 says :

were all Polanskis favorite movies about the brutal anal rape of 13 year old girls? Oh whoops my backwater rube roots were showing again and I wasn’t able to separate the “artist” and the “art” I fervently pray to a “god” that doesn’t exist that I never learn how to.

      • kloipy says :

LMAO! All my studies at NYC left me the ability to separate man from crime to see the true artist vision of such a grand pedo as Polanski.

      • Xiphos0311 says :

Do you also write rape fantasy articles for AICN? or best of decade lists? Which is essentially the same thing.

      • kloipy says :

heeheehee oh AICN how low will they stoop

      • Jarv says :

Got to echo that. I love North by Northwest.

    • Droid says :

Some Like It Hot is awesome. One of my favourite comedies.

North by Northwest is good, as is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Annie Hall.

      Midnight Cowboy is decent.

I don’t like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, film or book.

      Haven’t seen the others.

  4. Jarv says :

Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

    Shane. I hate the kid.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

    Metropolis
    Nashville
    The Last Picture Show
    Ran
    Citizen Kane
Plan 9 From Outer Space (hehehehe)
    M
Strangers on a Train (how have I not seen this?)
    East of Eden
    Barry Lyndon

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

Countless times, but not to thieve. Due to the UK’s Censorship laws I was unable to get into films such as Pulp Fiction legitimately, so we used to buy tickets to something we could get in to, and then sneak in. I saw Carlito’s Way on a school trip, and got caught because we fucked up the timings and the bus was leaving when we were still in the film.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

Julianne Moore. I hate her. Properly hate her, and her wailing has ruined countless movies (Magnolia) or made shite movies worse (Hannibal). Even Boogie Nights would be better with someone actually attractive in her part.

I also, for the most part, hate John Wayne films. Sorry.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?

Chaplain. I have no idea why.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

Er, this is probably a question intended for someone else. I gave a maximum to Split Second. However, Chronicles of Riddick is awesome and painfully underrated.

Have you ever been “one of those annoying people” at the cinema?

    No. I hate them.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

I’m sure I have, but generally not because of an actor- although I did sit through Junior, which I knew would be honk, because it had Arnie in it.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?

No. I’m a snob on this front.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

Fecking loads of them. Usually pretentious ones.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

2012. I can’t bring myself to throw it out, and the missus bought it. There’s also the curse of the bargain bin in Morrisons which has swollen the ranks of tosh on our shelves significantly. I am an idiot hoarder.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?

To echo Droid: Enormous bean bag FTW!!!

I am currently trying to persuade the missus of the merits of a beer fridge and how such an item is essential.

Any other confessions you want to make?

I have never danced with the devil in the pale moonlight.

    • Droid says :

Citizen Kane is really good. I think the stigma of “bestest moofy evah!” doesn’t help manage expectations, but it’s a damn fine film.

Plan 9 From Outer Space? How the hell have you not seen it? It’s hilarious, but also kinda boring.

Strangers on a Train is decent. I have the Hitch box set, so I’ll lend it to you.

Barry Lyndon is greatly underrated. Great film.

      • Jarv says :

It’s on Lovefilm’s watch now, but the missus threatens violence over it.

      • Droid says :

Plan 9? That seems a bit OTT. It’s more of a curiosity than anything else. It’s awful, and hilarious, but mostly awful.

      • Jarv says :

She just reacts very badly to the mention of it, and she sat through Adam Chaplin without complaining.

She can be funny about certain films- particularly those made before 1990. She pathologically hates Hammer for example.

      • Jarv says :

She also hates Westerns. The only one she’ll put up with is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which is probably one of my favourite movies of all time.

      • Jarv says :

I may do this in reverse, rather than guilty pleasure style go for positive type things.

      • Droid says :

What do you mean? The questionnaire?

      • Jarv says :

Yes- so instead of doing “omissions” do 10 favourite films. Kind of thing.

Not sure it will work, though.

      • Droid says :

Just seems a little bit weird to get up in arms over something as obviously innocently awful as Plan 9. It’s a curio, nothing more.

My missus would, quite rightly, refuse to watch Adam Chaplin. And she’d probably question our relationship if I were to voluntarily watch it. Again, quite rightly.

      • Jarv says :

It’s fucking odd, because provided something was made in the 21st Century, she’s quite happy to watch any old bollocks.

Don’t forget the amount of awful plastic slashers she’s inflicted on me. She’s currently working her way through the Stepfather series, because she saw the remake (when I wasn’t there) and wanted to know what the rest of them were like.

      • Droid says :

I’ve seen the Stepfather remake. For one reason. Amber Heard. Okay, there’s a film I could have put as an answer to the question. I’ve seen the Stepfather remake, which I knew would be awful, because Amber Heard was in it.

      • Droid says :

        I’ve not seen the original.

      • Jarv says :

It’s shite. All of them are.

      • Droid says :

Christ almight. One book becomes THREE fucking movies?!?!?!?!

Peter Jackson is looking to return to Middle Earth yet again.

Sources close to the production of The Hobbit say the filmmaker has concluded that he wants to turn his upcoming two-film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien epic into a trilogy. That would require additional shooting that sources say could take place next summer for about two months in New Zealand.

      • Jarv says :

Wonderful. I’m thinking I may just skip the first one altogether.

      • Jarv says :

Not sure this list is a good idea. I may well abandon it. It’s not interesting, particularly, beyond my top 10- which will surprise people, but aside from that it’s very similar to this article.

      • Droid says :

Man, a top 10 would be hard. I know 5 movies that would definitely be in there, but there’s so many that I’d consider, I don’t think I’d ever finalise it.

      • Droid says :

And for the most part, I don’t think it’d be very surprising. A lot of big names in there.

      • Jarv says :

Fuck it. I’ll do it anyway.

      • Jarv says :

Mine will be- particularly at the lack of Horror and Misery porn in there. But what I think I’ll do is schedule it at the end of the run I’m on, so that way it will be far from this one, and hopefully be fresher.

      • Droid says :

Mine won’t have horror. Or Misery porn. It has awesome stuff like BTTF. That’s numero uno of course.

      • Jarv says :

BTTF is a near miss on mine, as is raiders. If I were to do series, then I’d go for BTTF, Alien, The Indy Trilogy (someone should really make a 4th film), as nailed on.

      • Jarv says :

As an aside. I’m going to change the order, so I can do a “Things I hate about the olympics” post instead.

Yes, I am being a grumpasaurus about this.

      • Droid says :

I like the Olympics! I’m working from home for 6 weeks because of it!

      • Jarv says :

        Heh.

This is like when you suddenly became pro-Monarchy because you got an extra day off for the Royal Wedding.

      • Droid says :

        God save the Queen!

      • Jarv says :

        Yay!

And we had the Jubilee as well. So more days off for that!

        Pomp and Circumstance FTW!

      • Droid says :

BBC have added about 20 bloody Olympics channels to Freesat. Are they on Freeview too?

      • Jarv says :

        Aaaargh. I hope not.

      • Droid says :

        TDK series.

      • Jarv says :

Yes, good shout. I’d definitely include that, and Leprechaun

      • Droid says :

Thinking about it, nearly all mine are obvious.

      • Droid says :

I wish he’d just leave it. He’s expanded it to two movies. That’s already overkill. I need him to forget about LOTR stuff and make me my Tintin sequel. In the Congo preferably.

      • Jarv says :

        CASUAL RACISM FTW!!!

9 hours of the Hobbit will be inordinately boring.

      • Jarv says :

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried with Citizen Kane, but I’ve fallen asleep three times within the first 20 minutes.

      • Jarv says :

        Metropolis
        Gone With The Wind
        Nashville
        The Last Picture Show
        The Magnificent Seven
        Spartacus
        Walkabout
        King Kong (1933)
        Duck Soup
        The Third Man

Kong and Duck Soup are classic- Duck Soup in particular is brilliant.

I’m surprised you haven’t seen Walkabout, genuinely surprised at that.

Fuck Gone with the Wind. Awful shite. The only interesting thing about it is that Vivian Leigh said that Scarlett O’Hara is Blanche Dubois but younger.

      • Droid says :

Gone With The Wind is one that is merely a box to tick. I have to say, I’m not that interested in seeing it. But it’s a famous “classic” that I haven’t seen, so it made my list.

I’m surprised by not having seen Walkabout too. It was on Film4 a few months ago, but it was on late so I didn’t watch it.

      • Jarv says :

I’d actually tell you not to bother. It’s too long to justify in a box ticking way. The wife will probably love it though, Women generally do, and I’m at a total loss as to why.

      • Droid says :

I got the new movie from the guys who made The Castle and The Dish last night. I might kick off an Aussie series with that one. From all reports, it’s not as good as the other two, but one is in my top 10 of all time and the other is damn good, so that’s not surprising.

      • Jarv says :

I was surprised at how much I liked the Castle. The Dish is just almost perfect Sunday PM viewing.

      • Droid says :

I have no idea how many times I’ve seen The Castle. It’s got to be 25 or 30.

      • Jarv says :

The shitty local lawyer in it cracks me up.

      • Droid says :

Dennis DeNuto. Played perfectly by Tiriel Mora. He is gold. All the out of his depth stuff is genius, but I think my favourite part is where he finishes dictating a letter into the tape recorder, put’s in the earpiece and starts typing it up himself! hehehehehehe Just thinking about that movie makes me chuckle.

      • Jarv says :

It’s when he’s sitting in court and the voiceover is “Dennis had got the hang of this lawyer stuff” and he then pointlessly hands the QC a piece of paper with a puppy dog expression on his face.

        Does make me laugh too.

      • Droid says :

The paper says “Want some water?” and the QC looks down at him and Dennis is holding a jug of water and a glass. It’s bang in the middle of on of the QC’s statements to the court. It’s very funny.

      • Jarv says :

        That’s it. Gold.

      • Droid says :

I can see it now. You drift off to sleep, your pint glass drops from your hand to the floor and you mutter “Guinness” softly.

      • Jarv says :

I never drop pint glasses. What’s more likely to happen is that I gently drift off with a half full pint on my chest, then spill it when I wake up.

And have a little cry about wasting beer.

      • Droid says :

Oh, but that wouldn’t work for my joke!

  5. tombando says :

Ha good lists here….ahhh 10 classics I have not seen: Manhattan, Jezebel, Nashville, Shawshank, Wings, Magnificent Ambersons, Lion in Winter, Becket, Frenzy, Son of Ingagi.

Classic I hate: Pulp Fiction. Me and Cokey are not pals.

Another: All the Presidents Men. ZZZZZZZ

Worst movies I own? The Mummy 2, is a good example. I like the first, and the 2 leads. Its still awful.

Actress I like and will watch ala Droid and Ms Heathers? Theresa Russell and Erika Christensen. Cant say either are in much thats watchable.

Movie classic others need to see? Odd Man Out w James Mason etc.

    • Droid says :

Theresa Russell has Wild Things. That movie is awesome.

I like All The Presidents Men, and Pulp Fiction.

You’re spot on about Mummy 2. Abysmal movie.

The only one on your classics list that I’ve seen is Shawshank, which I like.

  6. tombando says :

Overrated Director: Woody Allen. If he didnt have the Nyc press he wouldnt be as big a deal.

Overrated Actor: Brando. Dont see it save for On the Waterfront etc.

“” actress: You will hate me, Meryl Streep. O boy another accent!

I think I have seen about every movie I own.

Snuck into Superman vs Zod I remember.

    Underrated Director: Martin Campbell.

Not one of those people in the movies.

Movie I love everyone hates? Transformers 2. It has Giant robots, you know….

  7. tombando says :

I disagree about Shane and John Wayne, too obviously. I like both Brando Nd Streep, but find them to be over blown.

Guy I wish more people had a chance to see now: David Niven. Guy who I love seeing in whatever he did: Borgnine.

  8. Stephanie says :

First of all, I love your title and header. I feel the same way you do about Blade Runner. Intriguing premise and visually interesting, but I just couldn’t connect with it.
